Making your own fire-starters

- In this video I will show you how to make your own fire-starters using pine shavings (the kind you can find at any pet store / agricultural store) and regular candle wax (I bought these at the dollar store). I believe I purchased my oversized muffin / brownie tins at the Christmas Tree Shop.
Which fire starters do I like more?? I'm not sure actually; they both seem to work equally well.
CAUTION: Do NOT using sawdust from pressure treated wood; it is toxic when burned.
MODIFICATIONS: Instead of pine shavings, dryer lint works well too. If you plan on cooking over your fire, be sure to light it well in advance or your s'mores might taste like fresh linen (or whatever candle scent you have used). Let me know if you have any questions!

An alternative if you have some old "broken" candles laying around, just stick a small stick or match in it, it dose the job... Quite well actually...
I do pretty much the same using cotton. From terry towel dryer lint and pill bottles.

As long as they are really dry, I’m sure you could. Something like really crispy oak or sycamore leaves would probably work well.

I made these today using an egg carton. I don't have shavings, so I used shredded up newspaper. I was able to make 18 with 2 x 4 inch tall candles that were no longer useful. I tested one out and it burned for almost 10 minutes. Awesome!!

Much easier way is to drop the shavings into an empty cardboard roll like kitchen towel roll and then cut it with a saw or bread knife when solid.

once when I was in 4th grade, I made a bunch of my own version of these for a science fair, but instead of using muffin tins it was a pvc pipe and a homemade press

Bounce sheets. Every survival kit should have box in it. Extremely flammable. These work really good as well. Great video
Egg carton size makes good fuel tabs for Esbit stoves.

I have done the dryer lint thing, but I have a dog that sheds a lot and it seems like half our dryer lint is her hair...which doesn't smell the best when burned. I happen to have good supply of wood shavings cause of the chickens :)

What you don't do is BLOW ON THEM to remove any excess.
Also, you don't do this outside under uncontrolled settings. Do this inside on a table covered in newspaper or parchment so as to not waste any material.

I learned how to do that in the Boy Scouts back in the late 70's. Isn't it funny how old techniques still work today. But now there called things like prepping, self reliance, etc. Impress me, think of something new.

This would work with wood shavings or better still sawdust from power tools etc. I can't believe how well they work without kindling.
Yes wood shavings would work well. Make sure you don’t use sawdust from pressure treated wood.

why?? just go buy firelighters.. your only going for a few days, not living in the woods forever.. better to learn methods to light a fire with natural items like flint and steel
YES! Thank you! Was looking for a faster way to make these than dipping the cotton pads in a pan etc... And wated them a little bigger and "meaner" than the fire those gave off. I Think this will do it. And I've got ideas how to make this a little faster as well. THANKS!
Or you could buy a pack of 24 Webber fire starter cubes for like 3 bucks?

These look super cheap and fun and easy to make. Gel fire starter for our corn stove here in Canada is just getting stupid expensive ($11.99/litre, plus 13% tax). These should work just fine for a _fraction_ of the price, plus have a longer lingering flame. Thanks! d:-)

I had a question. What do you think would work better to make firestarters? And Why? Low Melt, Regular or High Melt Parafin Wax?
That’s a great question, but unfortunately I don’t know that I can answer it. I’ve made these firestarters with all kinds of candles. Your best guess is probably better than mine. My only caution is, if you plan to make s’mores / cook over the fire, you don’t wanna use scented candles. Let me know what you find if you experiment.

Did you find that the Dixie Cups work? I found some craft paper cupcake liners online at Hobby Lobby for $2. I was wondering if the shape matters (square vs. round) in order to save space and just get a muffin tin at Goodwill and fill them half full so that they don't take up a lot of space and are easy to carry and store in a ziplock bag.

@@cheryldekoevend6626 Hi! Yes, they did! But I found that a silicone cupcake mold worked even better. You can make them larger and they last longer! Either way, both methods worked very well :) i used pine scented candles and the fire smelled amazing!!

You still need kindling tho when using a wood stove. ;)
I have it down...one firestarter between two smaller wedged pieces of wood. Slick as a whistle. ;)
simple and strait to the point would you advise any other shaving like oak , cedar or cherry just curious how the burn mixed with wax ?
Thanks! I’ve never tried anything but pine, but I’m sure they would work if they’re dry. If anything, oak and cherry might burn a little longer cause they are hard woods.
Genius idea with the egg cartons. No clean up, no waste. Cotton wick? Even better
Eggs cartons work great! I make them with a combination of spent coffee ground (well dried), hardwood pellets, paper shreds from junk mail. Mix together in an old pan with enough Gulf Wax to give it a damp sand consistency. Add the mix to the carton and pack with spoon or fingers, then add a little more wax if desired. The 40 lb bag of pellets cost a little over $6 at Tractor Supply, everything else is free! They catch fire easily and burn long. Good luck and have fun with it. Great kids project too.
How long does the fire stay going
I would say the fire starter stays lit for about 10 minutes
Did you spray Pam or anything in the pan? I can never get mine to pop out this easy. I use wood pellets, but I'll definitely be switching to pine shavings! Great video
I didn’t use Pam, but I think I maybe put them in the freezer to speed things up. If you flip them over and blasted them with a hair dryer on the back that would probably pop them out, or put them under a black garbage bag face down on a sunny day. Anything to melt where the wax contacts the pan 👍👍

I used pine shavings which can be found at most any pet store. Dryer lint also works if you don't have any...

I have tried going the dryer lint route before, but we have a dog that sheds a ton and much of our dryer lint seems to be her hair. Doesn't smell the best when it's burned :-/

Why not use the tin MOLD to press them down

yeah dude, you must live with mom & dad or simply never had to pay for heating your dwelling. These firestarters cost $20 a box and when your electric co. is raping you from using the heater you get into survival mode and this vid is EXACTLY what I needed to make my own firestarters so my fireplace can heat my home. Now I don't have to fork over unnecessary $ to elect co. and no more $20 a box to buy what I can simply make myself. THANKS FLEMING! You saved me a ton!
