Here are a few quick facts that I didn’t include in the video. The mansion was constructed from 1909 to 1914. It was built as a private residence by Henry Pittock (1835-1919) for himself and his wife Georgiana. Pittock was an English born pioneer who arrived in the Oregon Territory in 1853. He made his fortune as a publisher and wood and paper magnate. At the time of his death in 1919 his net worth was $8M ($125.4M in 2020 dollars). The last Pittock to occupy the residence was Peter Gantenbein (a grandson). He left the mansion in 1958. The mansion fell into disrepair until 1964 when the City of Portland purchased it and spent fifteen months restoring it. It was opened to the public in 1965 and has been ever since.
You know there has to be at least one or two ghosts in a place like that! I'm still amazed by the view from the back of the house. It was such a cool place to visit!!!
