Space 1999 Return of the Aliens

- Over 25 years ago I remember reading in Starlog magazine about Gerry Anderson's original hopes for a second series of UFO which would have featured an enlarged moonbase. We know that design work was commissioned and that the new moonbase would probably have resembled what became Moonbase Alpha. This got me thinking, and wondering what a UFO attack on the new moonbase could look like. Back in the mid 1990s, with my Panasonic video recorder (which acted like a VERY basic editing suite) I used my then prized video collection of Space 1999 and UFO episodes to combine the two series to simulate the first part of an episode that would show the Alphans stumbling across the planet where the aliens came from.
Of course, without any of the computer gimmickry several of you clever people use today (not to mention the hi definition quality you can produce) the result was fairly low tech as I could only use video footage that had actually been shot, and lift it from various episodes with a certain amount of sound re-dubbing.
I thought my video tape with this compilation was lost for over a decade, but I recently discovered it in a box in my attic and have converted it to MP4 to upload it here.
Just assume, for one moment, that the old SHADO base was left abandoned on the moon when the aliens mysteriously stopped coming to Earth in the late 1980s. Let's assume the moon tanks were still on the Moon and available for the Alphans to use if necessary. And let's assume that as commander of Alpha, Koenig had been briefed on the existence of the aliens and their attacks on Earth during the 1980s. Hence, in this version, you can understand why he instantly recognises the threat and sends Alan Carter straight up to counter any possible UFO attack on the base.
Of course, I would never be able to find sufficient footage to continue much beyond what I managed to achieve, so you will have to use your own imagination to dream up how the episode could have played out.
Enjoy.
No copyright infringement intended. This is a low quality 15 minute fan-edited mash-up of various episodes from both UFO and Space 1999 series which are available on DVD and Blu-Ray which fans are urged to purchase.
Only a true fan of both series would have enough knowledge of them to produce something like this that fits together.
Oh my god, I loved what you did here! Great ideal combining the shows into one episode of Space 1999. I grew up with both.....and yes I'm damn old to remember both UFO and Space 1999 when they first aired on TV. Great job and would love to see more of this kind of stuff from you.
Awesome. This was at the Movie theatre level, not a TV show and the mixing was unbelievable. Keep up the good job.
If nothing else Space 1999 was captivating ! I watched ALL 48 or was it 49 or 50 episodes in less than 2 weeks. It truly was addictive !!!
I used to watch Space 1999 as a kid in the 70s and just found UFO on UA-cam. This is cool
Wow, the aliens really came back with a vengeance, didn't they? Excellent, seamless merging of footage of 1999 and UFO. Blew me away.
An absolute master piece sir .... added this to my collection
Loved every second of it. Thank you!!
Wow! Watched both of these as a kid in the 70's and wished they would of made this. Thanks man,You rock!
You did a splendid job. I was NOT expecting the Mother Ships from V to appear. Alpha is toast.
Wah Vah
"Very cool episode!" Thank you! Cc1
That was really good. I never read the description when I first watched this clip ,and genuinely thought it may of been a long lost 1999 episode.
Well done :-) :-)
One of the best mashups I've seen!
WOW! WOW!
You realized something REALLY good!
Your explanation text is totally consistent.
Happy that Bob Mathias isn't dead...
Thank you for your great work.
Andrea (Italy)
For a fan mashup, this was incredibly well done. Love that twist at the end.
It's so difficult not to think of UFO when watching Space 99 and vice versa.
Okay that was VERY good. When I saw the UFO's coming into frame I said "hang on, shouldn't you be messing about with SHADO?" As the episode continued I thought it was a missing Anderson crossover between UFO & Space 1999. Then I thought to read the description...all became clear.
Damn fine work sir I congratulate you on and excellent minisode.
P.S. anymore???:-)
To quote the kids: THAT. WAS. AWESOME!!!!!
A brilliant combo of two really good sci fi shows from my childhood, well done!
Thanks Mark, really enjoyed it and brought back memories of my childhood 👍
This is awesome! Thank you for doing this and sharing with us. 🙂
That's awesome! I love the V motherships! Wasn't expecting that!! If the TV show UFO wasn't cancelled. Space 1999 moonbase Alpha. Was the next phase.
This is really good ! Far more convincing than your modest write up led me to believe. Well done!
Fine job of editing! I thoroughly enjoyed it. Many thanks for this! Cheers - Luther
In over 50 years I never knew of this crossover and UFO is my favorite series 😳😳😳
It’s fanmade …ok np I almost panicked
I think this was rather a good effort and exactly what Anderson did with some episodes himself to stretch the series some more.
I think this is soooo super amazing, Mark! Thx..........
That was very good. The editing was excellent. Good job!
Very well done indeed. I watched the original series of UFO and Moon Base many years ago.
Great nod. Love the combination of different syfis
Great Work, all my fav sci- fi in one episode.
Now that I've taken the time to watch this video in its entirety, I must commend you on the totally awesome, masterful job you did!!! :-D
That was good! I would've loved to have seen more! Well done!
This was an episode called "War Games" and the UFO's are being super-imposed over the images of the gunship-version of the eagles called "Mark-9 Hawks", smaller and sleeker guships that were twice as fast as the eagles and vastly more maneuverable and (in my opinion) quite lovely in their design
This is great shows that with love and commitment a lot is possible
Ha hahahhhaha! Now that was pretty funny! At first I thought I dont recall ufo craft ever being on this series, but when the ufo's from v flew by, I knew this was a spoof. Pretty clever and funny. Good job man!
Wow - great stuff ! This is very similar to a crossover fanfic story [no worries] I wrote that had Paul Morrow ordered to do a moonwalk to "cool off" after fighting with Alan Carter about something [I always felt Morrow was a bit of a hothead]. He stumbled across a log book that was left by commissioner Simmons who actually turned out to be a former SHADO person who reported to Striker back in the day - he had come up the day of breakaway under the commissioner guise to see if the alians were up to something, and ended up "stuck" and trying to get back to Earth to report in. He left a "in case of" in his logs of directions to the old SHADO base, which was now underground. The UFOs knocked out Eagles and Alpha's gear remotely by jamming their electrical gear out, but the SHADO gear was immune to it, so Carter and a couple of volunteers took up the one-shot fighters and nailed them, leaving pieces of the alien's drives on the moon to study. They also discovered it was the aliens fuel depot that shoved them out of orbit and FTL. . It was a fun write which put a nice spin on Simmons.
Fantastic job!
Fantastic job!!
Nice work
Fantastic editing and direction
VERY well done I loved it!!!!!
Very nicely done!
Excellent Work!
Your description sells you way short! This is brilliant and definitely would have worked as a concept episode.
By any chance, was your Panasonic VCR the NV FS100? If so, I, like you had a lot of fun putting snippets of different programs together to make them quite comedic. Shows like Prisoner combined with A Country Practice and Neighbours (yes, I am Australian) had a whole new meaning to them after they were subjected to my treatment...even just using the audio dub facility gave me and my friends hours of fun putting words into the mouths of characters that would NEVER use such language! 🤣
That was excellent mate. If you can do that with an old video recorder, just think what you could do now!
Ironically, the MK 9 Hawk (as shown in the War Games Episode you extracted footage from) was always assumed to be the next generation UFO interceptor for SHADO
Great work thank you for posting
Well done!
well done Mark, you really should finish it though.
This is Sweet !! Great Job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Awesome, thank you!
LOL. That was pretty good. Thumbs Up.
Couldn't somebody just once say;
"Thunderbirds are go!".
This and Breakaway were merged into a theatre movie in 1974-75 and my older brother took me. i was 6 or 7.
Brilliant The ideal "Cross over"!
At least, better than The Sy Fi Channel made movies
Great video, thanks.
I like your episode idea sir. I only wish Anderson himself had the option to produce it back in the day. I hope you'll pardon my slight resentment towards Space 1999. We both know it ended the possibility for more episodes of the UFO series. Not bad at all for a VHS edit. I used to do the same before computer editing became so easy and cheap. Question - If only one of these 2 series existed which one would you prefer it to be?
One time the alien space ships sneaked in by playing "My old man's a dustman" instead of going "weeee wipp weeee wipp weeee wipp" like they usually do. They thought they weren't aliens.
Thats AWESOME!
This was originally taken from the episode, " wargames". Actually, it was taken from several episodes.
Yes indeed. It contains footage from War Games, A Matter of Life & Death, Voyager's Return, Force of Life, Breakaway, The Black Sun, The Last Enemy, The Infernal Machine, The AB Chrysalis, The Dorcons, The Bringers of Wonder - Part 1, Space Warp and even The Metamorph.
Very impressive. 👏👏👏👏
GREAT EDITING WORK! Congratulations!!! You may finish the episode with war games, voyager return and Last enemy. Also, you may add the force field from Black Sun!!! :-)
I'm impressed (and slightly jealous). I couldn't tell if this was kosher; as sci fi houses are known for cannibalizing previous series' model kits...
Ed Straker would never have allowed the aliens to destroy alpha moonbase...shame on you , commander Koenig
I’m guessing it was the fashion police attacking moon base alpha for unspeakable costumes !
Great movie clip! like it!
Great job! Boom desu!
Looks better than cgi.
I always wondered why the windows didn't have shutters.
Perhaps so they can see what's coming just before they get blown out 😁
WAR GAMES, THE DORCONS, THE INFERNAL MACHINE... God I know I missed something.
Yes, you missed lots. Breakaway, Voyagers Return, The Black Sun, Force of Life, The Last Enemy, The AB Chrysalis, The Bringers of Wonder amongst others from Space 1999. From UFO I used clips from The Dalotek Affair, Close-Up, The Cat With 10 Lives, etc. And then there's ********** [Spoiler]
Mark Craig Man that was bad!
Damn good knitting together. Natural talent
Add a comment I like the space 1990 the science fiction and the u f.o.and the thunderbird series since 1964 and I have been a fan for fifty eight years. I enjoy seeing them on my cricket cell phone.
Don't forget...I think the big saucer ships you used in this episode are from the movie "V". If that's the case, don't forget the credit. UA-cam might frown upon that...
Army Engineer twentyone
Actually they are from the predecessor of Space 1999. Gerry Anderson’s UFO. Watched it religiously when I was a little boy.
So the miniseries "V" took them from "UFO"? Wasn't aware of that. Seemed pretty high tech for a 60s-70s show...
The little spinning saucers with clear tops are from UFO, the fleet of large saucers over the moon near the end are from "V".
That was what I was referring to...the big saucer ships. I was a fan of UFO back then too and never saw them (big saucers) in the series.
Great job. Micheal Bay would of loved this.
putting all this together from scenes of the shows UFO , Space1999 and Independance Day movie was ridiculous the clip of the flying saucer next to the Eagle was used on The Parliment album cover record LOL too funny
NOT the Independence Day movie. The 1980s hit series "V" to be precise. Too funny that you clearly missed that one!! :)
This is canon because victor knew what a hawk is in " war games"
I'd've paid to see that.
I lost count of how many Eagles whirled down the $#¡7β0WL just in the pre-title sequence alone. Those things ain't cheap either, even if you purchase "pre-loved" Eagles on Ebay! ;-)
What is the name of the title music ? Moon tango ?
considering the splicing of shows, not a bad story.
They have tanks from S.H.A.D.O.'s original moon base, why no interceptors?
Eagles were an upgrade from the Interceptors, just as Hawks were supposed to be the new sleeker attack craft that would supercede Eagles.
@@markcraig9889 I would assume the old Interceptor nuclear torpedoes would have been obsolete as well.
I don't think Shaving Cream on that window is gonna hold for long...
Standard A4 printer paper won't do a heck of a lot, either!
Even Humans are Alien in deep space
cool
tense...
Where do they get the Eagles for next weeks drama? Someone should keep track of the the number of Eagles the way fans kept track of the number of photon torpedoes fired by starship Voyager. Every one was accounted for. I believe starship Voyager fired 40 photon torpedoes during the series.
There is a tally. At least 24 Eagles destroyed. Eagle 1 destroyed 8 times. Some speculate that Alpha was able to build their own Eagles.
mark disculpa he estado viendo cada capitulo en español y hoy entro y me encontré q estaban en ingles pero comí q ya cambiaron algunos al español,es situaciones así es que me gustaría tanto saber entender el idioma, gracias
Dang! I was just getting into it, :-(
por que colocaron los episodios en ingles?????_los quiero ver de nuevo en español,ok??
Lo siento. La serie fue hecha en inglés, y yo soy inglés, así que hice mi mash-up usando ingles.
Send all to: www.gerryanderson.co.uk/contact/
An event could be organised about it!
THE scene from 50 seconds to 3mins 10secs is exactly the same from the seen in series one... war games except they fire upon different ships.... ??????????...
FAB
Bellissimo
Just how many buildings does Alpha have? That much damage should've wiped out the base...
Army Engineer twentyoneA Assuming quasi-realistic life support, 300 humans would need thousands of miles worth of tunnels. Some episodes hint at a amazing life support tech though.
Yeah...definitely, but I was simply referring to the surface devastation done. When you see the base from above, it doesn't look all that large in the grand scheme of things. Just seems like the aliens gave Alpha a shellacking and you'd think after that much damage, there wouldn't be much left.
Army Engineer twentyoneA I've always wondered how they repaired all that damage; being cut off from Earth and all.... using natural resources on the moon and their own repair facilities it might be possible but the odds are against it, especially when it involves replacing Eagles... this is still a great show though.
Don't get me wrong. I watched every episode religiously. I loved [and still do love] this show immensely.
I was just engaging the silly engineer in me that just sometimes does not employ the "willing suspension of disbelief" that is required for sci fi.
In large part, they would have had repair facilities for the Eagles and major end items for repairs to the facility, given the distance from Earth prior to breakaway. I just was wondering about having the parts and capabilities to effect major overhaul and remodel of entire sections of the base. Not sure if they would have had processing for raw mineral and resource collections, if the moon even has such things in it.
Army Engineer twentyoneA Gotcha. That was my point. I seemed like no matter how much damage they took it was always fixed. Same thing with Star Trek Voyager, the ship always got fixed. No worries, that is what sci-fi is about. I just hope that when humans do put a base on the moon it will be as resilient as moon base Alpha. I like this show too. I purchaed the first season on blu- ray, but the second season isn't available yet..GRRR.....
Same flying saucers used on another series.
omg they used the ufo scenes from the UFO v show
UFO was by far the better programme, Space 1999's acting and storylines were trite and quite ordinary in comparison. The acting was quite uniquely cheesey. You'd have thought that Space 1999 coming later would have been the more advanced programme. The two mixed together make space 1999 a lot better but results in a reduced quality UFO.
Where’s Straker ?
Flying teapots aaarghh
👍👍
