Nick - thank you for creating this video! Derby-Matlock is a charming and enchanting line but I have long believed that closing the line between Matlock and Buxton was a disaster. Beeching had some doubts about closure but may have been over-ruled by Barbara Castle and Harold Wilson. A full re-opening of Matlock-Buxton was examined about twenty years ago but was turned down due to the leisure facilities of the Bakewell-Buxton trackbed. Perhaps a compromise would be restoring the line from Matlock to Bakewell, perhaps with Peak Rail's involvement, and then extending the 199 bus from Buxton down to Bakewell: Derby to Manchester Airport with just one change. Keep up the good work, Nick!
The "decimalisation" of the bus codes is due to the buses using the main code all taking the same basic route but having different slight deviations on the way, or one going a bit further than the other.
@@JasonCliftJones Or why not 61, 62, 63 like they were when they were given those numbers? at some point the decimal point crept in and TrentBarton managers get more than a little annoyed if you don't use it when speaking about a route. I have the 9.1 and 9.3 where I live, most people refer to them as 91, 92 (opps, the 92 finished about 15 years ago and never made it to being a 9.2) and the 93. It's just a TrentBarton thing, just like cancelling a bus if they haven't got the correct liveried bus available.
2 interesting facts: 1. Matlock Bath in "old days" have a barrow crossing, without guard or lights, so trains need to slow down to 10MPH before crossing. When You cross - You can walk alongside disused platform into cable cars. Now is closed to public. 2. If You walk alongside canal from Whatstandwell to Cromford - there is nice surprise (I cannot tell because will be no surprise, You need to go and see) and also High Peak Juction - Home of steam powered cable railway (disused/dismantled). With, still standing, famous "pit trap" for broken cable runaway cars.
Crich may be on a hill, but you don't have to walk it. There are three bus routes that go past/very near it, the 140 (Matlock Station - Alfreton), the 141 (Matlock - Ripley via Matlock Station and Ambergate), and the 142 (Alfreton Station - Nether Heage via Belper Station)
It's "What? Stand well, and your improved stature will mean fewer back problems when you get old *and* make you more attractive? Great advice, thanks!'
Was in Cromford on Sunday for one of my travel vids. I'd used a Manchester wayfarer which gives you all of the rail network around Manchester and part of Derbyshire for £17 It also allows you use of certain bus companies. Which i'd used by going to Buxton via Bakewell then on to Cromford to go see Arkwrights Mill. Highly recommend using that ticket for a day out if you haven't already :)
I found myself driving via Belper a few times last year and the bonkers bus numbering system seriously stood out. I've since started to take an interest in bus numbering strategies. I grew up with a few local A B C postscript buses but they were rationalised away apart from N. Still see X(press) numbering in many places... but decimals🥴🤦?
That line is the one where I saw the final train needed to have sighted all EMR trains (excluding connect), and so in a way, it is a fairly special line to me.
"When you're in Matlock Bath You don't need Sylvia Plath ...not while you've got Mrs Gibson's jam" 🎶 -Half Man Half Biscuit - "The light at the end of the tunnel (is the light of an oncoming train)". A much better musical connection to this line than the monobrow twins!
I support a football team that plays in the Northern Premier League, so we have an away day at Matlock Town every season (and we've had a couple at Belper Town in the past too). It's definitely one of my favourite away games of the season because it's such a nice area. Just one of the many joys of supporting a small football team, because I may never have travelled across the Derwent Valley Line otherwise.
On reflection, I'm sure Matlock Heavy Shower would have been preferable to Matlock Bath - yes? My abiding memory of Matlock was that the youth hostel was at the top of a bloody great hill - and turned out to be full, on the occasion I went there - which meant a quick retreat for a bus to Bakewell...
Hey Nick! Can I suggest, for your next point-to-point journey, traveling between Hammersmith, at the end of the Midland Railway Centre - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hammersmith_railway_station and Hammersmith on the London Undergound? If that's too much hassle, maybe Hammersmith (District and Piccadilly) to Hammersmith (H+C and Circle) might be acceptable 😉
@@stephenmcculley7 busy A6 is not helping - if someone plan go there on any weekend/public holidays - is que traffic from Cromford/Matlock town and almost impossible to find a parking space. This same problems reminds me of Betws-Y-Coed in Wales.
Went up this line for the first time back in October on a Sunday afternoon out walking near Matlock, was very scenic especially with all of the autumn colours.
I would love to go to Matlock. Such a beautiful town in Derbyshire. The EMR Class 170s are very nice and hopefully next year. The new Class 810 Aurora’s will be in service.
If you ever chance - try and get a book BRANCH LINES INTO THE EIGHTIES BY H.I. QUAYLE & STANLEY C. JENKINS. It gives a real insight what that this and other lines were like in 1980. The picture is completely different to now. Most lines were dilapidated with DMUs on their last legs. Most had a real possibility of closing. The book obviously out of print but there are second hand copies available.
Done this line a few days ago to get to Matlock Saturday to then ride the Buxton TransPeak. Would have been funny if I saw you, I was on the 11am service out of Derby 😂
Great video! There’s one station I still need on this line; Matlock Bath! When I did Matlock I walked it from Cromford. I did Whatstandwell and Ambergate at a later date when I also did Belper. I ticked Duffield when I went to the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway so it left me with one omission. By the way, was the cable car working at the time of your visit?
I have to say that Matlock in Derbyshire is very nice and pretty place. How comes that Matlock is the County Town of Derbyshire and Derby isn’t the County Town of Derbyshire. Same with other places including Buckingham that used to be the county town of Buckinghamshire but Aylesbury is now the county town of Buckinghamshire.
I haven't been down this line yet despite having easy access almost every day for years and years... I really missed out as I want to see these station

Matlock Bath is known as the seaside town inland and given all the shops and the odd amusement arcade, it does have a seasidey feel.
And lot of car/motorcycle exaust fumes - not recommend if You looking fresh air ;)

Brilliant video Nick, I've been on the Derwent valley line as far as Matlock Bath, it's a nice line and has good scenery. :)
This is the line that I grew up on and you finally did it!
Every single time I’ve seen Matlock Bath, both in person and in videos, it’s been raining. I don’t think sunshine exists there
The bus station at Belper is unique (as far as I know), it is a bus station by day and a garage by night.
4:10 that's Cromford canal, it runs for a long way from Cromford to ambergate (I think) and I walk along it with my grandad on the weekends

Excellent video Nick. I have been there many times lots of great scenery.

The Tunnel tho. 😮
You're like Harry Potter sometimes....
Half the trains you get on are magically so quiet and virtually empty!
A station that looks familiar? "I said maybe..."
The building on the opposite platform at Cromford is, I believe, in operation as a holiday let.
Crich used to run a Heritage Bus linking in the trains at Whatstandwell on some of their busier event days.
Wait, what stands well?
If only they still did.
Last time I went was on the Yorkshire Traction service, all the way from Huddersfield.
