A good teacher makes you question what you think you know. They open the door to another level of learning and then inspire you to walk through. Sifu Chan does that! I've practiced Wing Chun off and on for almost 30 yrs and he inspires my curiosity to still dig deeper!

The Sil lim tao form seems boring, but it should be done regularly. The purpose is that all movements must be ingrained into the subconscious, so that you automatically perform them in sparring or fight, spontaneously, speedy and without thought. It will accelerate your co-ordination with a fast, smooth transition between movements, avoiding any wrong, unvolontary movement that may happen when conscious thought gets in the way. This is the often not understood or misunderstood reason.

Nice video. I’ll also add that Wong Shun Leung was Bruce’s main teacher (not Yip Man) in Hong Kong for 18 months before he moved to Seattle. Source from David Peterson and anybody else within the WSL lineage.

So glad I saw your video. I’m re-learning my forms from my brother who taught me when I was a teen and using it for everyday practice and wanted to learn more because he said there were lots online. You remind me of my brother and hey so glad you’re in Vancouver BC too. We may just bump into each other one day. It would be cool to see you practice sparring with my brother Chi. 😅 Thank you for taking time out to explain history and do different techniques from China & HK.

tnx Adam for sharing your knowledge of Gung fu with the world, you are amazing . The true warrior. Im learning gung fu since I was 5 years old starting with Bruce lee copying him day after day. I always train alone ,there was no masters to teach Gung fu in Slovenia in those years. Shore now its different, you can find someone those days. But when I saw you here on ytube I have got my will to train again. As soon I collect some money I will join your online courses ,now during this Corrona crises is a little bit hard to earn money here in Slovenia. Most people can hardly survive till the end of the month. This fake corrona destroys people lives and whole economy sadly. Respect Sifu.

There is so much variability in the heun sao. In the version of Wing Chun I'm currently learning, which is Hong Kong style, our heun sao has an "inside grind' or circle followed by an "outside grind" but the transition from the inside to outside circles adds a lateral swiping motion from center to outside, a "cut across the eyes". Curious if this is a common adaptation? I don't see it online anywhere.

@@ZaddyZavid dude, ground game useless or not, I do NOT care. I am looking for resources for wing chun that can be used when you're mounted. Good wing chun or not, nobody is perfect. And now Using your logic on Sakuraba beat Gracies. How about Genki Sudo mounted on Royler Gracie and punching him to KO (youtube it). Regardless who that person was, that Gracie could ALSO be you or anybody else being mounted and that useless BJJ cannot compare to the striking skiill when they are on the ground. Now you're left alone with your Wing Chun, and mounted... What's next? So do you know how to apply it while you're mounted? If NOT, then STFU.

Seems valid. Though you will never grab a punch being thrown. You can definitely grab a wrist before the shot is thrown. The biggest problem I see with Chinese martial arts is they don’t throw a hook. Probably the best punch in boxing is the lead hook. If you don’t train it how would you defend it.

Oh I was extremely impressed with wing chun ability to hit with their faces.
Had fought with 4 wing chun "masters" from so called "different school". One claimed to be direct descendant of yip man or whatever his name was.
Won all 4 fights in less than 3 mins. Send one to the hospital. Was really impressed by how all 4 sect of wing chun practitioners I had fought with attempted to hit my fist with their faces. Repeatedly.
I remembered in particular one who used his face to hit my fist so hard that my wrist hurt for like a week. Even had to go to a hospital to check it out.
You will never learn that from muay Thai, bjj, or other discipline.
One hit so hard with his face he literally spit tooth after our fight. 👍

I was taught that when doing circle hands your wrist should be lower than your elbow. You drop your hand whilst turning, otherwise the persons arm might get stuck on the inside of your arm. Most novices wil counteract that by disgarding the elbow and throwing it out of alignment.

    what Sil Lim Tau means to me;
    you are at a picnick
    a great big hornet appears
and you semi automatically swat it
    later
you are cooking a burger on the barbecue.
you accidentally place your hand palm down
on the red hot grill and
you semi automatically retract your hand.
you earnestly made it happen, but without thinking about it.
and that is what Sil Lim Tau is to me.
all the great dancers and artist working on the next level use Sil Lim Tau without realizing
it isn't a mystery, but it takes a while to learn it,
and the more you practice the deeper you understand it
but like 2 trees growing side by side, they may be the same species
but each will find its own way to reach the sky.

Footwork is much more important than handwork in modern fights. Most Kung Fu styles focus too much on handwork. If you can't get into position, you can't touch your opponents. This is also why I think Muay Thai can be weak too because of its clumsy footwork.
