    I’ve had an Outlander PHEV 2018 for three months and can fill in a few areas. Accurate review overall. If you’re considering this vehicle because of its electric mode, the distance of regular trips is what will make it economical, or greener, for you.
    -Base model has same powertrain and charging capabilities as fancy GT trim.
    -With an average commute of 35 miles and some 150 mike weekend trips, I have averaged 77.4 MPG. Since I can charge at work, I typically use 1/2 gallon to go 70 miles round trip.
    -Seems to operate reliably in EV mode up to 75mph+ without needing gas engine.
    -Heater use on cold days will reduce range from 22-26miles, to 12-16 miles ev range.
    -Heavy heater use will trigger gas engine to help produce heat on days below 45°.
    -Apple CarPlay integration is very nice, good screen.
    -Battery pack does have a heating system for protecting it in cold weather.
    -Phone app operates via WiFi connection, so it won’t do long-range unlocking/remote starting like Onstar can.
    -Bump-handling could be better, and I have a feeling nice Michelin tires would help the suspension.
    -You can program cabin heating, cooling, and charging schedules with the app.
    -The DC fast charge port is great for being able to use EV mode more.
    -Essentially, every time you charge the battery you are getting a gallon of gas range for $0-$1.50 depending on if it’s a free charge or you’re paying for electrons.
    -After using it in several heavy snow-storms in Colorado, it is stable and has a great 4wd system. Even with factory tires. I love having the efficiency of a hybrid with full time AWD.
    Basically I bought this car to use less gas and have one car that I can go skiing and to trailheads with, and feel safe in winter. It’s doing all those things well. The Chevy Bolt is one of the only cars that can do 100% performance in EV mode. Until Tesla comes out with a 300 mile range compact SUV with all wheel drive for $40k, this is a good option.

      How many miles do you log before your empty on both electric and gas? Like I get 250 miles on my 2013 Lancer in the winter before the warning pops up

      @@toshynews5561 it runs on gas like a hybrid when the battery gets low or you jab the accelerator. You don't have to charge it. But if you don't have anywhere to plug in at home or work I'd suggest a Rav4 hybrid for more room and reliability.

      Looks like a good suv but.....looks like it cost about 10K over a regular gas unit how long does 10K take to pay off fuel savings?

    I bought the Outlander GT model...not the PHEV type but the Outlander is a best buy for anyone. There is a lot of car functions that are not shown in any of these videos that people can adjust from when you want to power folding mirrors to fold in/out, how much air you want to flow to the windshield versus the feet area when turning on the heat, how fast you want the auto dim lights to turn on, and so much more. On the regular Outlander, it has the middle seats that can move forward and back like a passenger seat and the 3rd row can recline back a bit and is doable when 7 people are going for the ride. The only thing I don't like about the PHEV is that the rear seat can not move forward and back to adjust how much leg room people can have. It is stuck in the position it is in, but the fact you can still recline back is still good enough. If anything were to happen to my Outlander I would definitely buy this PHEV version. The thing is that the GT that I have has everything for about $34,000 with a 360 camera, adaptive CC, power folding mirrors, and the S-AWC with the V6 engine. At $36,000 you get what the SEL has when buying the PHEV but you have to pay $41,000 to get everything I have in my general GT Outlander. Its pretty tricky to see what you can benefit from the different models and price range when it is broken down. I would go for the GT PHEV because personally when I buy a car, I buy it to keep it for the long term..not waste time or money changing it every few years like some people. Like my current Outlander I plan to keep it until the wheels fall off lol

    Just a couple of corrections (as a driver for 2 years). The shift paddles aren't shift paddles they are to change the amount of regen braking - from 0 to 5. And the battery at the back is the 12 V battery not the traction battery which is underneath! Great car though....

    I just test drove one of these....I must admit, it really is a nice car - even ignoring the incredible efficiency. It's quiet, solid and tons of room. More room than my wife's new CRV (same price). My commute is 30 mi each way in horrible traffic ...but my company offers charging. That means I could save $300/mo over current costs of my Jeep in fuel alone - never mind brakes (regen!) and other cost improvements. I'm seriously considering this car. I would prefer a Jeep.... but thus far Chrysler has shown zero interest in true innovation as it pertains to efficient 4x4s. Sad.

      FYI- 2019 Outlander PHEV will have a more efficient engine and E-motor. And a larger battery pack, so the federal tax credit can go up too if ur eligible.

    The Volt is still the better plug-in hybrid car, but the Outlander is significantly more comfortable for 5, loads more room, more comfortable to ride in & availability of AWD + SUV styling are big draws. Having now lived with the Outlander PHEV for 3 months, it is a great vehicle - and I only visited the gas station about once per month.

    Hey Dave thanks for the review, how do you think it will do in snow? Loading ramp diagonal test? Off-road-ish? Could it handle slightly bigger tires to put it in Subaru ground clearance range? Been thinking about a Subie Forester but the PHEV is sounding pretty good too.

    • @shauntaylors
      @shauntaylors 6 років тому +3

      We picked up a 2018 a couple of weeks ago. We live in Rossland BC, where we get big snow. At nearly 2000kms I have driven it in some VERY challenging conditions... no problem. After the first 500kms we put on some studded winter tires (did I mention A Lot Of Snow yet), outstanding performance no matter what winter had to throw at us.
      Any other questions just ask and I'll try to help.

    The PHEV is pretty nice, but I just can't justify the extra cash even with whatever tax rebate the Government might be offering at this particular moment. I only put about 6,000 to 8,000 miles a year on my cars so it would take about a zillion to recoup the cost in fuel lol.
    The family has a 2013 Outlander Sport that we love, not very refined but she's been reliable and very fuel efficient over the past 5 years. Need to get a AWD car for going up into the Tennessee Mountains pretty soon and diffidently looking to Mitsubishi. I've seen your reviews on the Outlander and Outlander Sports off road, between them what would you prefer if you didn't have more than 4 people in the car at any given time? Is the Outlander worth the extra couple grand? I'll be getting the GT Outlander or the SEL 2.4 Outlander Sport, finally going to treat myself to a nicely equipped car after so many years driving baselines.

    • @toyotaprius79
      @toyotaprius79 6 років тому +3

      You should try telling that bs to all of us in Europe.
      This Mitsu PHEV has been among the top 5 most sold SUVs here since 2014, and also being above 3rd best selling plug-in since then. Just try it, quite often that's just the only thing from stopping plug-ins from making sense.

    • @vulpixgrant
      @vulpixgrant 6 років тому +1

      BS? I like Mitsubishi and am planning on buying a new one. Here I can get a fully loaded 6 cylinder Outlander for around $26,000 with rebates OR a PHEV for $32,000ish after government tax credit give or take a thousand. It would take a long time to recover that $6,000 investment for what is basically an identical vehicle short of powertrain and acceleration. If it was only a couple grand difference or if I drove 20,000 miles a year it might make more sense.

    • @bmx7596
      @bmx7596 6 років тому +3

      Lol 32k after rebates? That's a terrible negotiation if that's as low as you can get it. Without even trying I had them down to 30,500 after rebates. You're also assuming gas prices will stay at this ideal range. This is the best case scenario, and even then you would come out ahead. That's how we say it were I'm from in Tennessee anyway.

    • @iatsd
      @iatsd 6 років тому

      toyotaprius79 how is it BS? The facts are that the vehicle costs substantially more than an Outlander or Outlander Sport. The cost differential is very real for people that don't drive higher miles. It may literally take them 10+ years to see any savings from the PHEV.
      Personally, with driving mileage that low, I'd say it's not worth it. If you need the cargo space then the Outlander. If you don't then the Outlander Sport or Eclipse Cross. Regardless of what is chosen, replacement tyres are the first order of the day because Mitsubishi in the US specifies really crappy tyres.

    • @nc3826
      @nc3826 6 років тому

      More like 6 yrs to pay off a $6K premium assuming its used in EV mode for close to 100% of the time and average per KWH rate where he lives.
      But it could be never be recover, if its used in gas mode most of the time since the 2018 has as gas mileage not much better than the non-hybrid version.
      But that will all change in 2019 when it gets much more efficient engine and bigger batteries and E-motor.

  • @ammomeister

    I wouldn't buy it but rather do a lease simply once the lithium battery wore out it will be expensive to replace and the mechanical/electrical complexity of the powertrain I don't trust Mitsubishi dealership service department their competence to do quality work.

      ammomeister The batteries have a 3500 - 4500 charge cycle life. That's 10-12 years of charging if done *every* day. Very few drivers own vehicles that long.

      ammomeister in addition to what is mentioned above. It has the 10 year 100k powertrain warranty that does included the hybrid system! No other manufacture has a better warranty! Avg consumer drives 10k miles a year. The whole time you will own the vehicle its covered under warranty.

      Mitsubishi did what Hyundai did with its warranty to try to get ppl to trust them again. And Mitsubishi is just brand name since they have bought. So they should have the resources from its sister company Nissan to improve thing like the more efficient Atkinson ICE it will uses in 2019 version...
