I always enjoy videos like this i d like to see more Different commercial passenger trains owned by the railroads Such a shame commercial passenger trains were removed from service on May 1st 1971
The old Western Pacific train station in Oakland is briefly visible starting at 23:16 in this video. The building is still there on 3rd. Street, just north of Broadway. The train tracks have long since been paved over but in its heyday, The California Zephyr ran right down the middle of the street. Today’s Amtrak version ends in Emeryville (almost Oakland!). The Coast Starlight uses the Jack London Square station as well. Sadly, Amtrak’s California Zephyr doesn’t pass through the Feather River Canyon. Although the Donner Pass route is beautiful in its own right, the Feather River Canyon is a beautiful trip. I’ve driven the route on hwy 70. The railroad museum in Portola is worth the drive. There are several original California Zephyr cars being restored along with Western Pacific engines and other rolling stock and equipment on display. It’s not as fancy as the museum in Sacramento. It’s more like walking around in a real rail yard.
If any train ever demanded domes, it was The California Zephyr. And, wonder how long Rio Grande used Alco PA,s on the Zephyr in that mountainous terrain? Seems most roads dealing with such steep terrain ( Northern Pacific, Great Northern, Western Pacific, Southern Pacific on most northern California trains, and Santa Fe) used F units for better traction, since all wheels were powered. Read that E units and PAs overheated traction motors on these routes.
Not very, they used the Alco's to make a point to EMD that they had choices. From what I read, the horsepower ratings for the F units initially were a bit optimistic and so when the D&RG tested them in the mountains, they struggled compared to the equally rated Alcos. After making their point and EMD upgraded their units to match the rating, they did switch to using 4 F units.
Thank you for this video It s just to bad they don t have trains like this anymore I remember when commercial passenger trains were taken from service May 1st 1971 None the less I would like passenger service on the railroads in America start booming Do you have any videos like this of Union Pacific passenger trains ?

A thoughtful and informative recounting of the area, past and present. Well done Sir.
