Welcome back to ‘the bible says what’. Today I will summarize Proverbs chapter 14, which contains 35 of Solomon’s proverbs. I will give you another sampling of these, since there are many proverbs covering many topics. Let me encourage you to read all of the rest of them soon.
Solomon wrote: whoever walks in uprightness fears the Lord, but whoever is a crooked person despises HIm. Where there are no oxen, the stable is clean. But there is much increase that comes from the strength of an ox. The person who scoffs at the Lord will not find any wisdom. But the person who loves the Lord will find wisdom, knowledge and understanding. Leave the presence of a fool, or you will be like him. Fools mock at sin and pretend it doesn’t exist. The wise person is careful not to offend God. The naive man believes everything he is told. The prudent man discerns truth from lies. All people think they do what is right, but most will die in their sin.
Solomon continued; The wise man is careful and cautious and turns away from evil. The fool is careless and arrogant. THe evil and the wicked will bow down before the righteous in the end, just before the final judgement. The poor person has no friends, but many people love the rich person. Whoever despises his neighbor sins against God. But whoever is gracious to the poor will be happy. A truthful witness saves lives, but the liar is a traitor. THe fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, and the person who has it will avoid the snares of eternal death. The quick tempered person is a fool. The wise person is slow to anger. The wicked man will be thrust down to hell when he dies. But the righteous has a refuge and safe place to go after death. Righteousness exalts a nation but sin is a disgrace to any people.
The most important verse in this chapter is Proverbs 14:12 which states, ‘There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.’
The thing I think the Lord wants us to understand after reading this chapter is that the wicked person hates God, but the righteous person loves Him. And the person who loves hIm will find true knowledge and understanding. God wants people to know that sin is very real and He hates it with a passion. No sin will ever be allowed in heaven. And the righteous will turn away from sin and repent. Whoever has a quick temper is a fool, and God wants his children to be slow to anger. God wants us to know that the righteous have a safe place to go after they die. The wicked have the opposite. ANd, God wants us to know that there is a way that seems right to every person, but that belief may not be rooted in reality.
Of course you think you are doing what is right, or you wouldn’t be doing it. But does God have the same opinion you have? WHy don’t you subscribe to God’s way of thinking about things. Throw your own opinions away. Repent for your sin and turn to Jesus for salvation. Jesus humbled himself and died on a cross to pay for your sin, and he Father raised Jesus from the dead. God said if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and if you believe in your heart that the Father raised Jesus from the dead, you would be saved. Why don’t you do that right now?
