As with any other type of Latin dance such as cha, samba or jive, the basic moves must remain but couples are free to choreograph around it and create their own style. Nery has remained at the top for that very reason. His basic is faultless but he plays around with the rest. My quote is just an old saying which means if you're doing ok with something, then don't mess with it.

That’s a pro right there, gentlemen!! You have to send out some love for the dj too though!! It really starts with the dj, without smooth beats, dancers can only do so much. You go to so many socials where the djs are not really helping dancers. I mean you throw in aguanile at 300bpm and then you throw in whatever at 200bpm and then you do whatever. I mean to move smoothly one needs some music to work with!
DJs today are not playing the classics from the 70s - Ismael Rivera, Che Feliciano, Angel Canales etc. Wish they played more classic salsa and less new stuff.

I know djs who mix and interrupt salsa songs, often just as a song starts to peak and it’s about to get to the piano section and really explode and as a dancer you are about to take it to another level! Bam! The dude mixes in another one!! Some have no idea what they’re doing! They just like the idea of being “djs!” They don’t dance, don’t know much about the music or the musicians etc, certainly have no clue what dancers are looking for!
