Anderby Wold was the first published novel (1923) of this Immensely accomplished author, born in 1898. Winifred Holtby's most acclaimed novel is her final one, South Riding (1936). Her birthplace was the South Riding of Yorkshire, England. She rushed to finish the novel when she knew her life was in danger from kidney disease. She died in 1935 at the age of 37, and South Riding was published posthumously. She was very prolific in fiction and non-fiction, but was best known in her lifetime for her extensive journalism and her feminist activities. For many years, she was very closely associated with the better-known Vera Brittain (author, socialist, feminist), travelling, working and living with her.
