Today we look back at Delbert McClinton's 1989 Alligator Records release, Live From Austin. The year it was released, I was 16 and a drummer friend gave me this album on cassette, and I completely wore it out. Having not been exposed to much besides top-40 of the 1980s, and the contemporary gospel music of the day, The Texas Roadhouse music of McClinton was a revelation with its big, sweaty horns, incredibly tight rhythm section, and fine harp work. The band also featured the guitar work of David Millsap and Stephen Bruton, who brilliantly complemented each other with both their tones and parts. In a conversation with another Delbert veteran, James Pennebaker, I was clued into the fact that Bruton was sitting in with the band for the Austin City Limits TV taping that was also used as the audio for the "Live From Austin" album. Besides diving in on this wonderful album, we also take a look at the influence of the late great Stephen Bruton.

I happened on Stephen Bruton playing with the Resentments at the Saxon Pub in Austin some years ago. Became an instant fan. Also Jon Dee Graham, great singer & songwriter, was there as well.
Thanks for this "recommendation" Zac. I played a couple Delbert McClinton tunes on bass in a blues band years ago - but was otherwise unfamiliar. Jumped on a vintage recordings site while I watched this episode and found a copy of this album.
Dave Millsap was my first guitar teacher back in 1980 in Ft Worth, TX. Also bought my first guitar and amp from the music shop Dave worked at. A T-60 and a Pacer amp.

Anson Funderburgh, the great Texas blues guitarist, played on the 1990 album that followed Live From Austin-I’m With You.
I am intrigued with how much the church music scene has influenced American players, of course we have the Gospel link with the African/American artists, Motown/Blues/R&B and so forth-glad you got to get exposed to some 'Devil's music' Zac, it does not seem to have hurt you none!
Loved Delbert since the early 70's.......saw him at a small bar in Tampa. Florida.....he'd sit at the bar between sets and have a beer....I went right up and sat beside him and had a lovely chat....super nice, down to earth and very humble....him and his band were kicking it!!! Saw him many times after that...still one of my all time favorites!
Seen him a few times living my whole life here in Texas. He’s played just about everywhere. This is great stuff as usual, and what a great share. I enjoyed this story man! You’ve been a great refuge for me in a real rough spot the last three months Zac and I can’t thank you enough. I may send you an email about that someday, but until then, I’ll be anxious for the next video.
That album caused two buddies and me to see Delbert and Bruton at Jimmy’s in New Orleans during the 1994 Jazz Fest. Still one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. Bruton came on around 11:00 and played a rocking 45 minute set. Delbert came on a little after midnight and played until past 3:00 am, only handing things off the band for a couple songs mid-set. The poster from the show, signed by Delbert, is still hanging over my desk 30 years later.

Have you heard Seth James’ “Lessons”? It’s a Delbert approved tribute album and one of the best albums I’ve heard in a long time. He’s a great singer and guitarist that deserves a lot more attention.
His electric guitar playing has become fabulous over the last few years, he always had a great voice. Needs to be heard for sure!
I helped promote Delbert and Danny G’s ‘93 show in St. Louis. Lined up the two ‘32 Duce Hot Rods for the video shoot that day. Picked up and retuned Delbert to his hotel after his special appearance. The Sun Medley wow just wow.

Great episode Zac! I always loved watching the old ACL shows. It was always played on PBS on our local cable network on Saturdays and I’d always have my VCR ready to record something I would like. I still have the shows and transferred most of them to DVD. It’s changed a lot these days of course with the change in music so I rarely watch any new episodes now.
Delbert the "Gateway drug" to R&B. Love it. I've been into Delbert since the late 60s. Genuine Cowhide was the 1st album I bought.
I listened to this on the way to work this morning! Fantastic record with a great band backing Delbert’s exceptional vocals.

Yes Delbert McClinton live in Austin is in my collection. Delbert is. A Texas treasure. Guitarist Stephen Bruton was amazing. My favorite Bruton song is called Bigger Wheel. Check it out. If that song don't rock, I don't know what does! God bless Y'all and keep pickin.
Oh man! I was on a session many years ago the Bruton was producing and playing on. He was very gracious. He had impeccable tone and taste too. If I remember correctly he played a PRS and some weird little 1 watt amp on that project. But it sounded huge in his hands!
As a side note, his brother Sumter Bruton is a seriously great blues guitarist in Fort Worth. Gotta give him a listen too!

I read an interview with Billy Sanford in Guitar Player magazine way back when. In it he told of playing in Delbert's band saying "We're the best at what we do". One day shortly thereafter, I came across an album by Delbert in the bargain bin at a local record shop....78 cents !! Darned if it didn't turn out to be one of the best LPs in my collection !!

Well what a fine vocalist this guy passed me bye for many years the guitar sound on all his albums are driving and soulful i love two guitars kind of going at it .If possible could you do a vid on Chris Hillman there's a lot look at a long history. Another great vid super stuff
Thanks Zac. I love Delbert. My older brother was friends with him because (true story) Delbert’s mom found my brother funny. Which he really was. Saw Delbert a couple times live in smaller venues. Incredible.
You’re missing the original great guitarist that played with Delbert, Mike O’Neill. The first Delbert and Glen record. That record started a genre, Bruton is one of Mike’s biggest fans. Mike is from Wichita Falls Tx and good friends of Don Kelley and David Holcomb . Anyway listen to that record and you’ll see what I mean. 1972 , Mike is playing a tele through an old bass man and a Leslie. I remember Bruton calling him up over 30 years after the record asking Mike how he hooked up the Leslie! You are doing great work , thanks!
Mike is a great guitar player. I first started watching him in the early 90’s after Stephen and his brother Sumter told me about him. He stills plays in Wichita Falls as does David Holcomb who I run into from time to time

Thanks for sharing loving all the new content. It's interesting you spend time talking about Bruton. I discovered him in Jeff Bridges interview he did for Gretsch Guitars, for the movie Crazy Heart and his work with T-Bone(I really love that soundtrack and the movie). I then went back to listen to his work with Delbert and watch whatever live performances I could with Kris Kristofferrson and his work with Bonnie Rait. Also his feature in the movie Road to Austin.
Ordered this album from Alligator Records in the 90’s…great memories, man.

Another excellent episode Zac! In regards to Pennebaker, I first discovered his playing with Lee Roy Parnell in the 90's. His Tele twang matched LRP's slide Strat tone beautifully. The whole band was killer, with Lynn Williams on drums, Steve Mackey on bass, Kevin McKendree on piano, and sometimes Reese Wynans on B-3 and LRP's brother Rob Roy Parnell on harmonica. Several of those guys had played with Delbert before joining Lee Roy, and both bands have that delicious Texas mix of country, blues, soul, r&b and roadhouse music.
Stephen told one time that he just sat in for that gig as he was not in Delbert’s band at the time. Just heard you address that as I was typing this. Dave Millsap is in New Mexico now. There were a lot of great guitarists that came up in Fort Worth during that time including Stephens brother Sumter. The Bruton’s shaped my musical life. Will McFarlane told me that Stephen would sit in with Bonnie in the 70’s. Their relationship goes back a long way.
About 1990 a guy who sold old records at music fairs got me to buy Love Rustler- recorded in 1977 and I then got into Delbert Big Time. I managed to swerve into Austin on business trips to the USA in 1996 and 1997. In 1997 I was lucky enough to see him at La Zona Rosa- backed by Anson Funderburgh and Sam Myers! What a great show by both bands. Delbert's guitar player had a Telecaster but I did not recognise him. Funnily enough we had Max T Barnes play in my local pub a while back- his father co-wrote "Every Time I Roll The Dice" with Troy Seals- which is where he gets the T in his name. I do have this album, of course!

Delbert McClinton is so freaking awesome ! He is one of the greatest American singer song writer harp players of all time. Nothing Personal is a masterpiece of an album and a personal favorite.
I was fortunate enough to live in Austin 1976 to 1980. Delber McClinton along with other Lubbock and Amarillo artists such as Joe Ely, Butch Hancock, and Jimmie Dale Gilmore were all over Austin then. On a weekday you could see the likes of Willie Nelson, Doug Sahm, Kris Kristofferson, Warren Zevon, etc at local clubs like Castle Creek, The Broken Spoke, or Soap Creek Saloon. It was a great era.
I love the Buddy Whittington live version of shaky ground played on a borrowed tele..so funkin’ good!!
I saw Bruton playing in the Geoff Muldaur band in the early 1970’s. He had a gold top Les Paul with P90s, a twin reverb amp, a volume pedal that he turned around so top volume was pedal all the way up. I was onstage sitting a few feet from him. To top it all off he wore snakeskin cowboy boots!
This must be in the air because the Blues Brothers are in The air. Matt Murphy and Steve Cropper burn on their version of B-Movie. It was the first time I was told who Cropper was, probably ‘79

Two guitarists who left off were Billy Wade Sanders who was the main guy in the 70’s and early 80’s and Bill Campbell from Austin who really influenced the Vaughan Brothers when they arrived in Austin

Delbert McClinton in Austin is like a country guy who is really an R&B artist. So freshly out of place! But, Zac Childs must have had his his hair died cause it also doesn't quite go with the beard.
