I started playing guitar at 15 with one thing in mind: make the ideas I hear in my head a reality. It’s been 20 years since then and I feel like I’m finally getting to the point where I can do this on demand without having to dick around for several hours straight. No one can tell me things I already know about my downfalls, a big one being losing it because I’m not using it. I’ve taken long sporadic breaks from my playing throughout my tenure as a guitarist due to death, depression, trauma, fatigue from employment/school, and crushing self-doubt just to get back to where I was just to have shady and untrustworthy people try to gaslight and destroy whatever sanity I have left. I’ve been through a lot but it still hasn’t made me quit the instrument because I’m truly in love with music and what I’m doing. Hopefully there are people out there just like me who feel the same way and just want to make something great. People who aren’t concerned with any external factors other than what’s going on with them, what influences them and what can take them to the next level. Tl;dr version: Fuck you Glenn! I’m not quitting! No matter how many labels you wanna throw out there I’m not a fucking department store, ay! Have a nice day. :)
Mr.SomeGuyNamedNeuro I gotta say that your attitude is most fitting for someone that may be already a pro guitarist or for someone about to become such.. But I have been a little good with a "Jackson guitar company's black minion guitar" and noticed that sellers of guitars that are like my guitar don't care for how people "Waste time with a lack of talent" so I ended up reading that one of their advertisements says that my guitar is easy for children and adults.. But I know from experience since I taught myself that the guitars only work decently if you are truly eager to discover how to make good music wether you learn from just watching people or like me "where own ears is used with hands guessing on strings and memory in thought storing information about what to not do with the guitar when tryin to play".. So if you won't guitar just for you to begin with as a goal then I agree with Mr.Glenn saying "how you should just quit"... Also Forgive me, Mr.Glenn but "Guitars will get you laid but only if you had supports before you had your guitar because some ladies only favor when us guys get a little spiritual with our abilities if not then they want us to be totally spiritual" Honest to God here people we all have common sense to know that "Nobody likes a loser, not even other losers sometimes so if you can't shine as a winner at least avoid losing as much as possible because when losing then you should remember even more for the time being that Mr.Glenn said 'guitars will not get you laid' because guitars are almost like money and with money sometimes it's not about how much you have because really it's about what you put the money with.. So depending on what you put your guitar with you may just win but if not then you lose and try reducing the record of losing or keep it from increasing with losses".. Thanks for reading..

So I see Mr.Glenn mentioned "Mr.Tosin Abasi" and this is a famed black guitar player.. I have a tiny bit of fame as a black guitar player and thought someone here might enjoy hearing some of my best performances but again I had to remind myself that this is "America" and here many people are free to have "bias" against anyone they want here more than in any other place in the world.. Not sayin that the other places "Don't discriminate" but what I am saying that is in other places there's less "bias" against people like myself that stand out as a talented brown person.. EADGBE comes from the circle of Fifths. B and E were put in place of C and F to make fretting chords easier. I just learned this recently. It blew my mind since it helps you quickly identify each note on the fretboard.

My son LOVED music since he was born.... he's 14 now and plays excellent on piano (I taught him his first few chords then he figured it out on his own from there),he got his first guitar when he was 6 and a bass a few years later. I can honestly see him being a John Paul Jones....

Began playing drums at the age of 5 in 1975. Progressed to guitar around 1980 playing rock, metal and classical thanks to Rhoads, Lee, Van Halen and Malmsteen. I was fortunate to be a part of the inception stages of neo-classcial guitar style and found other great players of the early 80's through Shrapnel Records catalogue. Sometime around the late 80's I began to learn piano and would transpose variations of guitar riffs onto the keys. I had a passion for music so much that I sacrificed everything up until I was nearly 40 years old for the love of music. A decision I regret to this day. While my peers were off creating their wealth and building a family at an early age, I was couch surfing, broke, homeless most of the time and struggling financially. Thankfully I'm quite resilient and was able to make a full 180 with my life and amassed a substantial net worth over the last decade when I had finally made a decision to quit music and walk away from the touring life. I can still play Malmsteen, Vai, EVH, Rhoads and other guitar styles with ease today, yet I have no drive or desire to ever want to be in a band again. No motivation or drive to record again and quite frankly even just picking up one of the many guitars around in my house to just play seems like a chore. I don't find pleasure or joy playing even though the few that have seen me play recently freak out and think I should start a band. No one ever talks about the bullshit that comes with being in a band or spending thousands of hours and countless years learning guitar that may or may not earn you a desirable income. You're dependent on 3-4 other people in a band to learn their parts, play good, not bring their drama into the band, showing up for rehearsals, or contesting the band's direction and/or fighting for control when they are obviously not qualified to lead or lack writing skills. Where do you go when you have a great skill to play like the masters? Everyone has heard the best, so what can YOU really bring to the table that our predecessors haven't shown us? There is no originality today, nothing that stands out to me and says WOW this is amazing. Like the first time I heard Eruption from EVH in 1978. Or Malmsteen's Rising Force in 1984 on cassette. I was blown away then but nothing has even come close to impressing me like the aforementioned. It seems every jack off these days can sweep pick a million miles blind folded. Hell, even young teenage girls are all over social media playing what use to be considered difficult songs/solos on guitar with ease while annoyingly smiling in the camera the entire time. Bottom line is it's over! There are only so many notes and so many patterns and anything that would be unique to us trained ears would have to be unmusical to even stand out. But unmusical chords and scales sound like garbage and it's why the very few experimental bands that produced and recorded any type of unmusical material, would find their CD's just a few years later sitting in a bin for $0.50 at a pawn shop. Lastly, anyone who tells you just play because you love to and who cares what others think is just plain ignorant to the facts or is simply delusional. No one plays for themselves otherwise they wouldn't need to record a riff or a song right? I tell my musician friends who tell me they will still play no matter if people listen or not to stop recording and don't play anymore live shows. In fact, just unplug your electric and go strum and acoustic in a bedroom by yourself and see how long you last before you want someone to hear what you have crafted. Music today isn't even about music anymore too. It's all a big fat show.
I am close to 60 now retired and am starting to learn 6 string electric because it is an awesome instrument. And its ability to solo is awe inspiring. Glenn grounds everyone and I love that about him, no bullshit here. Practicing music can be a healthy distraction when the rest of the world is no good. Rock, Funk or Metal what ever makes you feel good. Technical ability is freedom to do what you want and do what you hear in your head, it just takes years if not a decade to get there. Teacher is a good idea. I personally use books, lots of books.
I don’t regret playing guitar but I regret wanting to be a famous guitar player. Like someone once said “If you expect fame out of music you expect too much and if you expect money out of it then get into management!”
Regarding point #1, I remember seeing a magazine interview with Reb Beach when he was in Winger where he talked about a meet-and-greet the band did: "All the chicks ran to Kip. All the dudes came to me."
It's probably my path to be playing guitar for the rest of my life, but whether I'll ever do it in front of other people is a completely different matter
If I even think someone is listening to me play then it all goes to shit. It's a pretty pathetic example of stage fright. But I'm never quitting. Figuring out how to play something correctly is like learning a magic trick, and it's totally my zen.
Sometimes I get down on myself for not being as good as these UA-cam raised kids but, I still enjoy learning cool riffs and my admiration for the creativity of artists when learning songs overpowers any self doubt over what some asshole 'try-hard' guitarist thinks of my playing style or abilities. :)
There's nothing wrong with playing for the sheer enjoyment of it. Not everything has to be a career or a money maker, it's alright to do something for no other reason than it's fun.

@@Rosiestoned I saw it on the web back in 2008 or so. I provided approximate wording to share my recollection of the concept. I may have saved a version, and I will keep an eye out for it, when I am navigating through what I saved, which I do now and then. I believe that it also had something to the effect, of one of the people saying, "I'll give you $20, if you stop playing for X amount of time". Again, it was probably 15 years ago, but one of the funniest, but also somewhat practical concepts that I ever came across. Thank You for your reply, _John_

The thought of playing guitar to get laid never crossed my mind. In fact, it's the other way around, playing guitar has made me realize that there are things more enjoyable and meaningful to do than doing what your hormones tell you. I started playing guitar because my friend is an excellent musician and I wanted to be able to play with him.

Appreciate all you do Glenn! Haven't chimed in a long time. It's nuts to see how easily musicians are manipulated into thinking "God tier" gear is what makes you a better musician. I've fallen for the same trap and bought a 7 string Majesty. After using it as my main workhorse for recording and playing live for 3 years I decided 3 volume pots, 7 way switch blade, 20db boost, push pull, coil split, piezo pick up installed with piezo 3 way switch above the neck on the horn of the body plus a wham may actually be distracting me from playing the guitar better and practicing new techniques. I've recently had an occurrence where I engaged the 20db boost by accident live and fried some ears during a solo of all things (I apologize for that) XD. So in an effort to make things easy, I've recently downsized my gear to be simple, easy to plug in and play. I understand being curious about what a guitarist uses, which is fine. But dudes, please just be cool and use your eyes, ask questions if you absolutely need to, but after playing a show, the last thing I wanna do is talk about my signal chain and what I'm doing and yada yada. When I finish a set, I just wanna get my gear put up, have fun and enjoy the rest of the show. All I get is flak from other guitarists once they SEE my setup because I'm not running a "real" amp head. I just use my Boss GT 1000 now because it's small, powerful and sounds amazing. One thing that may be funny though, I did a show a few years back where nothing was on stage except for my Headrush Pedalboard. The soundguy brought lots of Mesa cabs, Ampeg bass cabs and had them all over the stage. It LOOKED cool. I wasn't plugged into anything except the PA and my headrush speakers (one on each side of stage). I make my own presets based off of tones I love and for that show, where they thought I was using amps, the guitarists gave me all the props in the world, said I had the best tone they had heard in a long time. I had questions all night from guitarists and they all suddenly became uninterested when I began explaining my signal chain and why I use what I do was essentially all from the modeler. Now I rock a Schecter Silver Mountain C8 Blood Moon and for the money I got a really good guitar. Set input gain correctly on my GT-1000 and I was blown away at how good it was compared to my other instruments. Sure there were differences, but none that justify paying that much more for an instrument like I did with the Majesty. Now my signal chain is Schecter C8>GT 1000>Boss Katana Artist MK2 Power Amp Input. And this will power my old Carvin Legacy 4 x12 cab plus send XLR/ 1/4 inch outs to powered cabs and F.O.H. Super long story short: Don't believe the gear/tone snobs. Make it easy, and enjoy the show 🤘. Nobody cares!
I've been using 1 guitar and 1 audio interface with Logic Pro for 10 years. Never been interested in any pedals, cabs or amps. 7 years ago I found my sound for once through some random sound mixing tutorial on UA-cam, made a preset that sounds acceptable and never bothered changing it.
@mikeraccoon It's all about keeping things simple for ease of use for sure! This new tone I got with my (even smaller than before) set up with just the tonex pedal. Crazy easy to set up, just one thing and it goes straight into PA or straight into the front of an amp with cab with a clean channel and I just turn off the Cab sim if running it that way. @DoktrDub It always helps to keep it simple too, less to worry about, and you can get on with playing and practicing and making good songs. It's all about songwriting and telling an awesome story that moves people.
You have to play because you love making music. Guitar is just the tool, like any other instrument. If your really into it, you’ll just pick it up and practice. Shred away, but you gotta play and even write songs to better urself. I taught for years after Berklee. Biggest advice I gave was no matter how good you get, always keep it musical. 🎸🤘

I actually started off as a drummer and recording engineer, and started playing guitar after getting tired of waiting for guitarists to show on time. After 25 years and numerous bands, I can attest that guitar players have almost killed the passion of music for me more than women, children, bass players, and money combined.

Been playing on and off for 25 years, having a kid 4 years ago made me finally pick it up and put in the work to learn proper production skills and music theory so I can teach him the passion of music, guitar and production. He "jams" with me weekly (vocals) and even watches some of your episodes! Ha ha raising them right!
It doesn't matter if another guitarist is better than you.. it matters how unique you are with your playing, stage presents, charisma and quality of your mix.. it's how you're able to stand out.
It matters how good your music is, most legendary guitarists we know today aren’t god tier players, far from it.. and even then if you are great and creative with your music and mixes.. if you try to please everyone you end up pleasing nobody, always do what you want to do is the first key fundamental!
I know it's a joke, but I feel like not enough guitarist just play for themselves. I have no ambitions of going on a stage or playing for anybody else and never have. That doesn't stop me from studying Jazz late into the night though.

Wherever were you in 1985 when I heard RUSH and began my irrational journey. Joined a band ,married the keyboard player, had 3 kids toured for 9 years, retired to a church band where my grandkids now fight over the drumset after the service 😳

As a guitarist, I loved this video. So many people pick up the guitar for the wrong fucking reasons. I think looking back when I was younger, I did pick up the guitar for those reasons (to get laid) but as an adult, I've come to enjoy it and I only got better. That was after a 5 year hiatus and some serious self-reflection. Gotta keep doing what you love, but you gotta be true to the spirit of the guitar and not the libido of the guitar. We are not the most important person in the band. (In my opinion, even if I'm not a bass player, I think bass is more important than guitar sometimes because it makes the music alive). I wish more people understood this (even guitarist and bassists) and even with your berating of bass players I think you fundamentally understand this as well. Good shit and good video! Keep it up!
To be honest, I started to get a lot more attention from the opposite sex when I started switching to bass. Maybe it's because I don't use a pick when playing and they just start to imagine what those fast moving fingers could be good for... Writing checks.

It may tough to make a living off of it, but it is most definitely a career. Yeah not everyone becomes ultra famous for it, but even a guitarist playing in a bar is getting paid most times.

I started moving gear because it got me into the Club without anyone checking my I.D. Before I ever got my first guitar I remember guys telling Joe Satriani that he was not going to succeed without a Singer. I, for one, never had any idea that the guitar would ever make me a dollar or get me a girl. It is a lot of fun, so there.

Welcome to guitar, the hobby that comes with endless expense and virtually zero return! I had a teacher for the first year, and it certainly helped keep me focused. Some of the best players I've met use very basic strat or single-cut guitars that are mid-range at best. Hopefully EZ Strummer will be developed soon, then I can just copy and paste everything.
It's not an endless expense any more than a car or anything else you need to maintain/service every once in a while. I have been playing the same guitar for 40 years (I built it from scratch), and don't buy every pedal that sounds interesting... I make what I have work, but of course I was very particular about what I did spend money on in the first place. It has to sound right to me, for me, no matter what anyone else has to say about it. I never buy on a whim, and use the fact that so many are selling old gear to blow even more on the latest and greatest gimmickry to my advantage. Stuff just falls into my hands having so many musician friends. My amp was traded to me for guitar repair from a client who just had to have something more boutique, and I took it to re-sell at a profit, but when I tried it, it was just the sound I had wanted. We are talking ~$120 for a rarely used 100W Marshall Valvestate with the same balls, but more control and range in available sounds than the JCM 900 I had a very long time ago. When ever I want something new, I don't just buy it, but wait for a sale, buy floor display or returned... and save big. I can fix just about anything which is also a big plus.

Began to learn scales finally, began to write songs - bought a used Harley Benton Fusion III guitar for 250€. My Rock and Bluesband mates play only Gibson and Variax guitars and keep bullying me about my crappy instruments… I don’t mind. And I don’t mind you - sorry Glenn.
Glllennnn! Fuck! You nailed it! Although I did get laid... which led to kids (and grandkids). Everything you said is absolutely true, problem is that those who are young enough to benefit won't believe you. On the plus side, UPS says my bass will be delivered today. It's used, so it already has old strings on it and I can fit in right away. Now, if only that new speaker cab will make me sound better.
YOU WERE WRONG ABOUT SOMETHING : I played electric guitar from 2006 to 2012 ( and I became pretty good - between medium and high intermediate level) and then stopped playing (and I mean ZERO guitar!!!) and sold all of my guitars (for financial and health reasons). I ALWAYS wanted to get back to it someday but I was SO AFRAID I would lose my abilities and have to start all over again.....Anyways, I started playing again in 2020 right after the pandemic and BOY OH BOYYYY...it litterally took me 2 months (ok lets say maybe 3 months..TOPS!) to gain virtually 100 % of my abilites (1-2 h of practice each day aside from the first few days because my fingers hurt a lot of course)...I could not believe it !!!! I was SO happy !!! Its like riding a bike, you pretty much never forget...Now I am substancially better than I ever was before ! I thought this could be very interesting information for you guys because so few people actually played for years then stopped for even more years and then started again! The only thing that bothers me is that my friend (I played better than him back in the day and who started at the same time as me back in 2005-2006 but he never stopped, became a GOD in guitar...and he doesnt even use is PINKY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WTFFFF!!!!!!!!!!!
I like this video! It makes me feel like a rebel for not quitting even though I did make a small human. My practice time is like my meditation. Good for my mental health. But if you are a parent, you gotta be realistic about the pace at which you’ll improve at guitar. Anyway, I love this channel sincerely.
Agreed. Becoming a parent was a huge adjustment and it was very difficult in the beginning because I couldn’t play guitar anytime I wanted to anymore. That’s been my therapy for over 20 years! I’ve become a lot more realistic about my playing time and get it in when I can.
Just traded my lefty Angel of Deth for a lefty Les Paul. I’ve wanted one since i was 14 years old. Took me 40 years to get one. I still have more fun on my Wolfgang, and 2009 Schecter Devil. It’s an ok guitar, and it plays fine, but technology has helped make far better guitars. Hell, my modshop hardtail strat plays better! But now i can say i have one… woo hoo.
If you had the set neck Angel of Deth with the livewires in it, I think you’ll live to regret getting rid of it. I had a silver DM Dean set neck and active Duncan’s MIK and it was probably the best playing and sounding guitar I’ve ever had. I loved the neck and pickups on that thing.

However, I’m no longer doing live work- I’m too old and hate people- so it’s not idea; for recording, due to the shape. I was going to keep it until Dave kicked the bucket, but i know this guy will love the guitar, and the LP is a good addition. Will it be my number one? No- that’s always been the Schecter Devil. With the Wolfgang a close second. But it’s a fun guitar to play, and it’s unlike my other guitars. So, it will likely lead to some good tones on recordings. And it’s loaded with the Duncan slash set, so there’s that, too
Am I one of these old guys now? I experimented with low tunings, found that drop C tuning is where I think the guitar breathes perfectly. Low end, without losing some of that tightness and crunchiness that gives your guitar that thump… “chug chug” instead of “zunn zunn”, you dig? Hahah most of these bands don’t even have a bass player just two guitars tuned to drop J 😝😝
George Lynch once said, in reference to 8 string guitars and detuning (and I'm paraphrasing here): "We had these things back in the day to cover the low end frequencies, they were called Bass Players, and they were great because they only played one string and you didn't have to pay them a whole lot. The downside was, every once in a while you had to remind them that they weren't entitled to an opinion."
Way ahead of you. I just sold all my guitars and amps at the end of June and I've never felt better. No more wasted time writing mediocre riffs that will go to the great graveyard in the documents folder. No more frivolous spending on strings, picks, pedals(that get used once and then never again), and most importantly, guitars, because more guitars = more better right? And finally no more wasted space in my home from all the junk that once occupied over 1/4 of my bedroom that I pretended I needed because I was TOTALLY going to start a band. I'm in my 30's and have come to the good senses that my musical dreams died before they were ever born. Now I get to spend less time obsessing over making music and my lack of ability therein, and more time enjoying music.
I used to hate listening to live versions of songs because it didn’t sound like the album version, over the years I’ve broken that ignorance lol and now I use live shows to see what is possible with guitar. There are some amazing guitarists that can pull off stuff they did in the studio just as well live, and some that cannot and that has helped me a ton with confidence and separating the heavily edited stuff. Tone kills me cause everyone talks about it and I fall into wanting to sound exactly like whatever I’m watching, then I go watch a live show and it eases my mind. My best example would be Judas Priest’s US festival show.
Ironically lots of younger bands share that old mindset and are using tracks to sound EXACTLY like they do on record. Even the same tempo and everything. I know its not metal but take Somebody to love by Queen....studio...its a gospel track.... live...4 of them make the song work like magic! Priest are such a good example of tone live too! 🤘
The "so many are better than me" is definitely a big issue for me, I feel so insecure about my guitar playing after watching other people playing, sometimes I even feel like I should give up, there is no point to keep playing hoping that one day some people will like it, as I know it won't happen anyway, I know that I like doing it but I just feel there is no point doing it anymore

I quit at 29 after spending all my twenties spending thousands on gear and Craigslist/Facebook group band rehearsals. I wasted too much time copying heavy metal guitar tabs instead of learning theory.

I picked up the guitar because I saw the Van Halen videos on MTV!!!! And in the ROCK magazines such as Circus, Hit Parader, and Creem and sometimes Rolling Stone!!!! The magazines always seemed to make ROCK STARS look like they have the great FUN life and that they make sooo much money and that they get girls!!!! When I started playing guitar and started to taking guitar lessons I had it in my head that the guitar would be my ticket to doing something different from what my parents did for a living!!!! My Dad was an electrical engineer and my mom was a high school teacher and homemaker!!! I wanted do something with my life that seemed fun, exciting and adventurous with out killing myself!!!!!😂😂😂😂😂🤣😂🤣🤣😂L.O.L. And make a decent living at !!!! Reality hit me in the face and I realized learning the guitar is hard work if you want to be really good at it!!!! I wasn't a musical prodigy and I was somewhat tone deaf!!! But when I was finally able to play "Rock You Like A Hurricane" by The Scorpions on guitar !!! (Just the rhythm parts) I thought it was the coolest thing in the world as a 14 year old in 1985!!!!! I found joy and escape for me with guitar!!!! I know I couldn't sound and play like Eddie Van Halen or Randy Rhoads yet, but I didn't care!!!! I was still having fun playing!!!! 😊 I started being more creative with the guitar and started coming up with my own riffs and eventually my own songs!!!! Back then in 1985 I didn't have access to computers and video games were played at places called "Video game Arcades" were you had to leave the house and interact with people in person!!!! I thought video games were a waste of time and money!!!! Back then you had to put $ quarters in the video games to make them work!!!!! I didn't have much money when I was 14-15 years old!!!! Just money I earned from mowing lawns and yard work and Birthday or Christmas money I got from Mom and Dad!!!! I still play guitar at 51 years old and I still enjoy it and have fun at it!!!!😀😀😀😃🙂😃🙂😄 All these years of playing guitar one would think I would be an awesome guitarist!!! I think you basically just described Gibson players. 😏 Jokes. Seriously though, it is hard. Having aspergers it was never about girls, I just wanted to make more friends, I dived so far in to learning my chops it was almost obsessive, using proper song structure and not how you say "riff salad", how to dial in a tone for live vs recording etc etc you know the score. Plus your experiments with valves/wood and speakers have taught me a fuck ton as well. Even though I've played some really great places and nearly been signed twice in my life and it never came off, I still love it and I will never stop playing shows. I used to be a "guitarist" but now I think about everyone's place in the band and how it all fits together like a jigsaw puzzle. Dynamics are the key to everything.

I started playing guitar at 15 with one thing in mind: make the ideas I hear in my head a reality. It’s been 20 years since then and I feel like I’m finally getting to the point where I can do this on demand without having to dick around for several hours straight. No one can tell me things I already know about my downfalls, a big one being losing it because I’m not using it. I’ve taken long sporadic breaks from my playing throughout my tenure as a guitarist due to death, depression, trauma, fatigue from employment/school, and crushing self-doubt just to get back to where I was just to have shady and untrustworthy people try to gaslight and destroy whatever sanity I have left. I’ve been through a lot but it still hasn’t made me quit the instrument because I’m truly in love with music and what I’m doing. Hopefully there are people out there just like me who feel the same way and just want to make something great. People who aren’t concerned with any external factors other than what’s going on with them, what influences them and what can take them to the next level.
Tl;dr version: Fuck you Glenn! I’m not quitting! No matter how many labels you wanna throw out there I’m not a fucking department store, ay!

But I have been a little good with a "Jackson guitar company's black minion guitar" and noticed that sellers of guitars that are like my guitar don't care for how people "Waste time with a lack of talent" so I ended up reading that one of their advertisements says that my guitar is easy for children and adults.. But I know from experience since I taught myself that the guitars only work decently if you are truly eager to discover how to make good music wether you learn from just watching people or like me "where own ears is used with hands guessing on strings and memory in thought storing information about what to not do with the guitar when tryin to play".. So if you won't guitar just for you to begin with as a goal then I agree with Mr.Glenn saying "how you should just quit"... Also Forgive me, Mr.Glenn but "Guitars will get you laid but only if you had supports before you had your guitar because some ladies only favor when us guys get a little spiritual with our abilities if not then they want us to be totally spiritual" Honest to God here people we all have common sense to know that "Nobody likes a loser, not even other losers sometimes so if you can't shine as a winner at least avoid losing as much as possible because when losing then you should remember even more for the time being that Mr.Glenn said 'guitars will not get you laid' because guitars are almost like money and with money sometimes it's not about how much you have because really it's about what you put the money with.. Began playing drums at the age of 5 in 1975. Progressed to guitar around 1980 playing rock, metal and classical thanks to Rhoads, Lee, Van Halen and Malmsteen. I was fortunate to be a part of the inception stages of neo-classcial guitar style and found other great players of the early 80's through Shrapnel Records catalogue. Sometime around the late 80's I began to learn piano and would transpose variations of guitar riffs onto the keys. I had a passion for music so much that I sacrificed everything up until I was nearly 40 years old for the love of music. A decision I regret to this day. While my peers were off creating their wealth and building a family at an early age, I was couch surfing, broke, homeless most of the time and struggling financially. Thankfully I'm quite resilient and was able to make a full 180 with my life and amassed a substantial net worth over the last decade when I had finally made a decision to quit music and walk away from the touring life.
I can still play Malmsteen, Vai, EVH, Rhoads and other guitar styles with ease today, yet I have no drive or desire to ever want to be in a band again. No motivation or drive to record again and quite frankly even just picking up one of the many guitars around in my house to just play seems like a chore. I don't find pleasure or joy playing even though the few that have seen me play recently freak out and think I should start a band. No one ever talks about the bullshit that comes with being in a band or spending thousands of hours and countless years learning guitar that may or may not earn you a desirable income. You're dependent on 3-4 other people in a band to learn their parts, play good, not bring their drama into the band, showing up for rehearsals, or contesting the band's direction and/or fighting for control when they are obviously not qualified to lead or lack writing skills.
Where do you go when you have a great skill to play like the masters? Everyone has heard the best, so what can YOU really bring to the table that our predecessors haven't shown us? There is no originality today, nothing that stands out to me and says WOW this is amazing. Like the first time I heard Eruption from EVH in 1978. Or Malmsteen's Rising Force in 1984 on cassette. I was blown away then but nothing has even come close to impressing me like the aforementioned. It seems every jack off these days can sweep pick a million miles blind folded. Hell, even young teenage girls are all over social media playing what use to be considered difficult songs/solos on guitar with ease while annoyingly smiling in the camera the entire time.
Bottom line is it's over! There are only so many notes and so many patterns and anything that would be unique to us trained ears would have to be unmusical to even stand out. But unmusical chords and scales sound like garbage and it's why the very few experimental bands that produced and recorded any type of unmusical material, would find their CD's just a few years later sitting in a bin for $0.50 at a pawn shop. Lastly, anyone who tells you just play because you love to and who cares what others think is just plain ignorant to the facts or is simply delusional. No one plays for themselves otherwise they wouldn't need to record a riff or a song right? I tell my musician friends who tell me they will still play no matter if people listen or not to stop recording and don't play anymore live shows. In fact, just unplug your electric and go strum and acoustic in a bedroom by yourself and see how long you last before you want someone to hear what you have crafted. Music today isn't even about music anymore too. It's all a big fat show.
I am close to 60 now retired and am starting to learn 6 string electric because it is an awesome instrument. And its ability to solo is awe inspiring. Glenn grounds everyone and I love that about him, no bullshit here. Practicing music can be a healthy distraction when the rest of the world is no good. Rock, Funk or Metal what ever makes you feel good. Technical ability is freedom to do what you want and do what you hear in your head, it just takes years if not a decade to get there. Teacher is a good idea. I personally use books, lots of books.

Sometimes I get down on myself for not being as good as these UA-cam raised kids but, I still enjoy learning cool riffs and my admiration for the creativity of artists when learning songs overpowers any self doubt over what some asshole 'try-hard' guitarist thinks of my playing style or abilities. :)
There's nothing wrong with playing for the sheer enjoyment of it. Not everything has to be a career or a money maker, it's alright to do something for no other reason than it's fun.

I may have saved a version, and I will keep an eye out for it, when I am navigating through what I saved, which I do now and then. I believe that it also had something to the effect, of one of the people saying, "I'll give you $20, if you stop playing for X amount of time". Appreciate all you do Glenn! Haven't chimed in a long time. It's nuts to see how easily musicians are manipulated into thinking "God tier" gear is what makes you a better musician. I've fallen for the same trap and bought a 7 string Majesty. After using it as my main workhorse for recording and playing live for 3 years I decided 3 volume pots, 7 way switch blade, 20db boost, push pull, coil split, piezo pick up installed with piezo 3 way switch above the neck on the horn of the body plus a wham may actually be distracting me from playing the guitar better and practicing new techniques. I've recently had an occurrence where I engaged the 20db boost by accident live and fried some ears during a solo of all things (I apologize for that) XD. So in an effort to make things easy, I've recently downsized my gear to be simple, easy to plug in and play. I understand being curious about what a guitarist uses, which is fine. But dudes, please just be cool and use your eyes, ask questions if you absolutely need to, but after playing a show, the last thing I wanna do is talk about my signal chain and what I'm doing and yada yada. When I finish a set, I just wanna get my gear put up, have fun and enjoy the rest of the show. All I get is flak from other guitarists once they SEE my setup because I'm not running a "real" amp head. I just use my Boss GT 1000 now because it's small, powerful and sounds amazing.
One thing that may be funny though, I did a show a few years back where nothing was on stage except for my Headrush Pedalboard. The soundguy brought lots of Mesa cabs, Ampeg bass cabs and had them all over the stage. It LOOKED cool. I wasn't plugged into anything except the PA and my headrush speakers (one on each side of stage). I make my own presets based off of tones I love and for that show, where they thought I was using amps, the guitarists gave me all the props in the world, said I had the best tone they had heard in a long time. I had questions all night from guitarists and they all suddenly became uninterested when I began explaining my signal chain and why I use what I do was essentially all from the modeler.
Now I rock a Schecter Silver Mountain C8 Blood Moon and for the money I got a really good guitar. Set input gain correctly on my GT-1000 and I was blown away at how good it was compared to my other instruments. Sure there were differences, but none that justify paying that much more for an instrument like I did with the Majesty. Now my signal chain is Schecter C8>GT 1000>Boss Katana Artist MK2 Power Amp Input. And this will power my old Carvin Legacy 4 x12 cab plus send XLR/ 1/4 inch outs to powered cabs and F.O.H.
Super long story short: Don't believe the gear/tone snobs. Make it easy, and enjoy the show 🤘. Nobody cares!

I've been using 1 guitar and 1 audio interface with Logic Pro for 10 years. Never been interested in any pedals, cabs or amps. 7 years ago I found my sound for once through some random sound mixing tutorial on UA-cam, made a preset that sounds acceptable and never bothered changing it.
@mikeraccoon It's all about keeping things simple for ease of use for sure! This new tone I got with my (even smaller than before) set up with just the tonex pedal. Crazy easy to set up, just one thing and it goes straight into PA or straight into the front of an amp with cab with a clean channel and I just turn off the Cab sim if running it that way. These new videos I've been doing are all with the Tonex pedal alone, and I use it for my bass, too. Check out how heavy this sounds:

@DoktrDub It always helps to keep it simple too, less to worry about, and you can get on with playing and practicing and making good songs. It's all about songwriting and telling an awesome story that moves people.
You have to play because you love making music. Guitar is just the tool, like any other instrument. If your really into it, you’ll just pick it up and practice. Shred away, but you gotta play and even write songs to better urself. I taught for years after Berklee. Biggest advice I gave was no matter how good you get, always keep it musical. 🎸🤘

Lol. I wish I could send this back in time to myself. I actually started off as a drummer and recording engineer, and started playing guitar after getting tired of waiting for guitarists to show on time. After 25 years and numerous bands, I can attest that guitar players have almost killed the passion of music for me more than women, children, bass players, and money combined.

Been playing on and off for 25 years, having a kid 4 years ago made me finally pick it up and put in the work to learn proper production skills and music theory so I can teach him the passion of music, guitar and production. He "jams" with me weekly (vocals) and even watches some of your episodes! Ha ha raising them right!
It doesn't matter if another guitarist is better than you.. it matters how unique you are with your playing, stage presents, charisma and quality of your mix.. it's how you're able to stand out.
It matters how good your music is, most legendary guitarists we know today aren’t god tier players, far from it.. and even then if you are great and creative with your music and mixes.. if you try to please everyone you end up pleasing nobody, always do what you want to do is the first key fundamental!

As a guitarist, I loved this video. So many people pick up the guitar for the wrong fucking reasons. I think looking back when I was younger, I did pick up the guitar for those reasons (to get laid) but as an adult, I've come to enjoy it and I only got better. That was after a 5 year hiatus and some serious self-reflection. Gotta keep doing what you love, but you gotta be true to the spirit of the guitar and not the libido of the guitar. We are not the most important person in the band. (In my opinion, even if I'm not a bass player, I think bass is more important than guitar sometimes because it makes the music alive). I wish more people understood this (even guitarist and bassists) and even with your berating of bass players I think you fundamentally understand this as well. Good shit and good video! Keep it up!
To be honest, I started to get a lot more attention from the opposite sex when I started switching to bass. Maybe it's because I don't use a pick when playing and they just start to imagine what those fast moving fingers could be good for... Writing checks.

It may tough to make a living off of it, but it is most definitely a career. Yeah not everyone becomes ultra famous for it, but even a guitarist playing in a bar is getting paid most times.

I started moving gear because it got me into the Club without anyone checking my I.D. Before I ever got my first guitar I remember guys telling Joe Satriani that he was not going to succeed without a Singer. I, for one, never had any idea that the guitar would ever make me a dollar or get me a girl. It is a lot of fun, so there.

Nah, bass players can play as many strings as they have toes, so some bass players can play 6 or even 7!

Welcome to guitar, the hobby that comes with endless expense and virtually zero return! I had a teacher for the first year, and it certainly helped keep me focused. Some of the best players I've met use very basic strat or single-cut guitars that are mid-range at best. Hopefully EZ Strummer will be developed soon, then I can just copy and paste everything.
It's not an endless expense any more than a car or anything else you need to maintain/service every once in a while. I have been playing the same guitar for 40 years (I built it from scratch), and don't buy every pedal that sounds interesting... I make what I have work, but of course I was very particular about what I did spend money on in the first place. It has to sound right to me, for me, no matter what anyone else has to say about it. I never buy on a whim, and use the fact that so many are selling old gear to blow even more on the latest and greatest gimmickry to my advantage. Stuff just falls into my hands having so many musician friends. My amp was traded to me for guitar repair from a client who just had to have something more boutique, and I took it to re-sell at a profit, but when I tried it, it was just the sound I had wanted. We are talking ~$120 for a rarely used 100W Marshall Valvestate with the same balls, but more control and range in available sounds than the JCM 900 I had a very long time ago. When ever I want something new, I don't just buy it, but wait for a sale, buy floor display or returned... and save big. I can fix just about anything which is also a big plus.
Thank you Glenn for this important information! I am absolutely happy with my bad guitar playing since decades. Last year I even decided to practice and join a band. Began to learn scales finally, began to write songs - bought a used Harley Benton Fusion III guitar for 250€. My Rock and Bluesband mates play only Gibson and Variax guitars and keep bullying me about my crappy instruments… I don’t mind. And I don’t mind you - sorry Glenn.

YOU WERE WRONG ABOUT SOMETHING : I played electric guitar from 2006 to 2012 ( and I became pretty good - between medium and high intermediate level) and then stopped playing (and I mean ZERO guitar!!!) and sold all of my guitars (for financial and health reasons). I ALWAYS wanted to get back to it someday but I was SO AFRAID I would lose my abilities and have to start all over again.....Anyways, I started playing again in 2020 right after the pandemic and BOY OH BOYYYY...it litterally took me 2 months (ok lets say maybe 3 months..TOPS!) to gain virtually 100 % of my abilites (1-2 h of practice each day aside from the first few days because my fingers hurt a lot of course)...I could not believe it !!!! I was SO happy !!! Its like riding a bike, you pretty much never forget...Now I am substancially better than I ever was before ! I thought this could be very interesting information for you guys because so few people actually played for years then stopped for even more years and then started again! The only thing that bothers me is that my friend (I played better than him back in the day and who started at the same time as me back in 2005-2006 but he never stopped, became a GOD in guitar...and he doesnt even use is PINKY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WTFFFF!!!!!!!!!!!
I like this video! It makes me feel like a rebel for not quitting even though I did make a small human. My practice time is like my meditation. Good for my mental health. But if you are a parent, you gotta be realistic about the pace at which you’ll improve at guitar. Anyway, I love this channel sincerely.
Agreed. Becoming a parent was a huge adjustment and it was very difficult in the beginning because I couldn’t play guitar anytime I wanted to anymore. That’s been my therapy for over 20 years! I’ve become a lot more realistic about my playing time and get it in when I can.

It’s an ok guitar, and it plays fine, but technology has helped make far better guitars. Hell, my modshop hardtail strat plays better!

If you had the set neck Angel of Deth with the livewires in it, I think you’ll live to regret getting rid of it. I had a silver DM Dean set neck and active Duncan’s MIK and it was probably the best playing and sounding guitar I’ve ever had. I loved the neck and pickups on that thing.

However, I’m no longer doing live work- I’m too old and hate people- so it’s not idea; for recording, due to the shape. I was going to keep it until Dave kicked the bucket, but i know this guy will love the guitar, and the LP is a good addition. Will it be my number one? No- that’s always been the Schecter Devil. With the Wolfgang a close second. But it’s a fun guitar to play, and it’s unlike my other guitars. So, it will likely lead to some good tones on recordings. And it’s loaded with the Duncan slash set, so there’s that, too
Am I one of these old guys now? I experimented with low tunings, found that drop C tuning is where I think the guitar breathes perfectly. Low end, without losing some of that tightness and crunchiness that gives your guitar that thump… “chug chug” instead of “zunn zunn”, you dig?

George Lynch once said, in reference to 8 string guitars and detuning (and I'm paraphrasing here): "We had these things back in the day to cover the low end frequencies, they were called Bass Players, and they were great because they only played one string and you didn't have to pay them a whole lot. The downside was, every once in a while you had to remind them that they weren't entitled to an opinion."
Way ahead of you. I just sold all my guitars and amps at the end of June and I've never felt better. No more wasted time writing mediocre riffs that will go to the great graveyard in the documents folder. No more frivolous spending on strings, picks, pedals(that get used once and then never again), and most importantly, guitars, because more guitars = more better right? And finally no more wasted space in my home from all the junk that once occupied over 1/4 of my bedroom that I pretended I needed because I was TOTALLY going to start a band. I'm in my 30's and have come to the good senses that my musical dreams died before they were ever born. Now I get to spend less time obsessing over making music and my lack of ability therein, and more time enjoying music.
I'm sending this to all my guitarist friends so they can hear this godlike wisdom. Keep up the good work Glen!

I used to hate listening to live versions of songs because it didn’t sound like the album version, over the years I’ve broken that ignorance lol and now I use live shows to see what is possible with guitar. There are some amazing guitarists that can pull off stuff they did in the studio just as well live, and some that cannot and that has helped me a ton with confidence and separating the heavily edited stuff. Tone kills me cause everyone talks about it and I fall into wanting to sound exactly like whatever I’m watching, then I go watch a live show and it eases my mind. My best example would be Judas Priest’s US festival show.
Ironically lots of younger bands share that old mindset and are using tracks to sound EXACTLY like they do on record. Even the same tempo and everything. I know its not metal but take Somebody to love by Queen....studio...its a gospel track.... live...4 of them make the song work like magic! Priest are such a good example of tone live too! 🤘

The "so many are better than me" is definitely a big issue for me, I feel so insecure about my guitar playing after watching other people playing, sometimes I even feel like I should give up, there is no point to keep playing hoping that one day some people will like it, as I know it won't happen anyway, I know that I like doing it but I just feel there is no point doing it anymore

I quit at 29 after spending all my twenties spending thousands on gear and Craigslist/Facebook group band rehearsals. I wasted too much time copying heavy metal guitar tabs instead of learning theory.
My pentatonic shenanigans have brought me a lot of joy over the past couple of years, I'll continue to enjoy the mediocrity there of. I picked up the guitar because I saw the Van Halen videos on MTV!!!! And in the ROCK magazines such as Circus, Hit Parader, and Creem and sometimes Rolling Stone!!!! The magazines always seemed to make ROCK STARS look like they have the great FUN life and that they make sooo much money and that they get girls!!!! When I started playing guitar and started to taking guitar lessons I had it in my head that the guitar would be my ticket to doing something different from what my parents did for a living!!!! My Dad was an electrical engineer and my mom was a high school teacher and homemaker!!! I wanted do something with my life that seemed fun, exciting and adventurous with out killing myself!!!!!😂😂😂😂😂🤣😂🤣🤣😂L.O.L. And make a decent living at !!!! Reality hit me in the face and I realized learning the guitar is hard work if you want to be really good at it!!!! I wasn't a musical prodigy and I was somewhat tone deaf!!! But when I was finally able to play "Rock You Like A Hurricane" by The Scorpions on guitar !!! (Just the rhythm parts) I thought it was the coolest thing in the world as a 14 year old in 1985!!!!! I found joy and escape for me with guitar!!!! I know I couldn't sound and play like Eddie Van Halen or Randy Rhoads yet, but I didn't care!!!! I was still having fun playing!!!! 😊 I started being more creative with the guitar and started coming up with my own riffs and eventually my own songs!!!! Back then in 1985 I didn't have access to computers and video games were played at places called "Video game Arcades" were you had to leave the house and interact with people in person!!!! I thought video games were a waste of time and money!!!! Back then you had to put $ quarters in the video games to make them work!!!!! I didn't have much money when I was 14-15 years old!!!! Just money I earned from mowing lawns and yard work and Birthday or Christmas money I got from Mom and Dad!!!! I still play guitar at 51 years old and I still enjoy it and have fun at it!!!!😀😀😀😃🙂😃🙂😄 All these years of playing guitar one would think I would be an awesome guitarist!!! Seriously though, it is hard. Having aspergers it was never about girls, I just wanted to make more friends, I dived so far in to learning my chops it was almost obsessive, using proper song structure and not how you say "riff salad", how to dial in a tone for live vs recording etc etc you know the score. Plus your experiments with valves/wood and speakers have taught me a fuck ton as well.
Even though I've played some really great places and nearly been signed twice in my life and it never came off, I still love it and I will never stop playing shows.
I used to be a "guitarist" but now I think about everyone's place in the band and how it all fits together like a jigsaw puzzle. Dynamics are the key to everything.
