Brings back so much memories watching this again. Not only G4 actually showing video games and useful documentaries such as this episode of Icons. But watching this again, like the first makes the kid in me come out again. Thanks I needed this video again. :D
Suzuki-san is one interesting game designer. I grew up on playing games designed mostly by his SEGA-AM2 team in arcades, on the Sega Master System, Genesis, Saturn, Dreamcast, PlayStation 2 & 3,Nintendo Gamecube, Microsoft XBOX, and Wii.
shenmue was too far ahead of its time! it was a experience like never before, an on eof my greatest games ever! any one who loves cinema, an gaming, an music, an interactive art owes it to themselves to experience shenmue 1an2! i think if yu suzuki would make shenmue 3 now, an with all the mod cons of gaming today it would be a monster hit, all over the world unlike the original which was only famous in japan, an amongst hardcore gamers, like me, today the world would love a open world SHENMUE3!
Shenmue was and still is the greatest game ever!!! If money is the issue with this game continuing it's quest, I'd donate $20-50 and have others do the same while signing a petition to bring shenmue back. I'm sure with all the die hard fans out there, we'll have more than enough money to finish the story once and for all!
@JezBollah 667 Salty, biased, and jealous SEGA fanboy detected. You got it mixed up too. It was Suzuki who followed Miyamoto's lead with his trendsetting and innovations. Shigeru Miyamoto > Yu Suzuki. Objective facts.
How about we just grow the fuck up, stop acting like 8 year old fanboys, and acknowledge that both Yu Suzuki AND Shigeru Miyamoto are visionary geniuses and the industry would be much worse off without either of their influence.
thanx for adding this i used to love the old G4 but the shows thats actually good are AOTS and X-Play, but i used love Icons tho anyway thanx for adding this
@showti He is currently working on a couple of things that we know about. 1 being Shenmue Gai/City and also a kinect fighting game. He has also just made a new studio that actually has many people who worked with him on the first shenmue. Fingers crossed!
This video shows video game industry is floundering, its not taking risks, and doing things that push the definition of video games. Technically i feel like the Sega Dreamcast has not been topped. Its software support set the groundwork for the modern industry. And that industry has used this grounded game styles in a repetitive manner to make money rather than building on the works of the past. I would say just on a technical level, Shenmue 1 and 2 were the most in depth games ever made.
Shenmue brings back human values in video games...it's so beautiful and fun and mysterious and passionate and realistic and amazing and the story gets you hooked and the characters are so cool, it's simply unique and one of a kind..truly one of the few best game I've ever played...Yu Suzuki, please don't let us down...THE WORLD NEEDS SHENMUE!!!!! IT REMINDS US HOW BEAUTIFUL AND URGENT IT IS TO BE A HUMAN BEING IN THIS TIME!!! IN THIS WORLD OF WAR AND HATE, IT PURIFIES THE SOUL!!! ONEGAISHIMASU!!
I love Shenmue 1 and 2 as they are the best games ever!!! They really pulled you into another world that games today fail to accomplish. Shenmue 3 needs to happen!!!!!
@Balzak802 Suzuki said he believes Sega would let him make Shenmue 3, note he said "let". which suggests Sega won't legally block him from doing Shenmue under his own steam. The thing that really illustrates Suzuki's brilliance is Virtua Fighter: Sega asks him to make a game to rival Street Fighter 2, and where most game designers would try to copy SF2, Suzuki instead comes up with something completely new. The mark of a true innovator.
The end of this is just about heartbreaking. We lost a decade of Suzuki-san's brilliance because of a bunch of fucking suits with no vision. At least Shenmue III is really coming, and hopefully Suzuki-san will continue on making brilliant games (Shenmue or otherwise) after finally getting back in the saddle.
low US sales be damed, Shenmue I and II are masterpieces. i bought my copies, and i totally think they should continue the series. fans need to keep pushing Suzuki to do it. there were a grip of showcase shots of Shenmue during the course of the documentary, so i really think they may be trying to get it picked up again. Xbox is shit, so i think if they put out 3 on PS3 (or PS4) and sell the first two games as DL material online, we'd have a winner. come Suzuki, DO IT. LoL
It says shenmue 2 wasn't in english on xbox...but I played it in english. Did I hear that wrong or did they make a mistake? He left Sega because he finally got tired of their mis-management.
Since they haven't brought Shenmue 1 & 2 to the PSN/Xbox Live Arcade, I believe that SEGA is saving them and Shenmue 3 for their rumored mysterious new console. Just imagine Shenmue a launch title for it, I would buy it and the new console first day. Who else thinks this might happen ^_^?
This guy (I hate how he talks) says something about "VF's Master System games that were just like cool story books?" what the hell is he talking about? There was VF for the Game Gear, guess it was ported to Master System in Brazil, but it was only one game!
I kinda love how this video ignores the original Viruta Fighter release and only shows the Remix version. Kinda contradictory for a show about Video Game history. Also, I love how they skip over the 32X. When that guy said, "This was the first time people were able to practice their moves at home." LOL, the remix version wasn’t the first home version of VF. I would have agreed with the statement way more if they actually showed off the Saturn version of Virtua Fighter with those crappy polygons. Plus, hearing the sameguy say that Shenmue II was only "subtitled" on Xbox legit made me cringe. Man, not even G4 was perfect back then. Icons was a show that was truly ahead of it's time for me as a child. But re-watching many of these episodes made me realize how many of the facts were messed up on.
It's quite sad that he insisted the English voice acting for Shenmue be done in japan. With so few professional English voice actors in Japan, amateurs were brought in leading to many of the voices being almost comical.
wow a Japanese man that knows nothing about martial arts i know most dont these days but you would have thought yu suzuki growing up would have had some training
Legend. I've had countless hours of fun with Suzuki's games. Sega AM2 is one of the best game development teams in history.
What about Naughty Dog
What about them?
Shigeru Miyamoto
Yu are a legend!! 🤟🤟🤟
SHENMUE WAS A revolutionary game, It set so many trends ex: the 3d GTA series for one
Thanks Yu, for make my life better with your spectacular games.
Sega 4ever.
Without a doubt, the father of 3D gaming.
People like Yu Suzuki are very inspiring to me.
All gamers owe a lot to Yu Suzuki like they did Shigeru Miyamoto.
Without Virtua Racing and Virtua Fighter revolutionized video games.

Shenmue 1 and 2 is a game that stays with you long after you finish the game. It is so immersive.
Thank you so much for uploading this, I love Yu Suzuki so much...I still hope for Shenmue 3, I believe it, it will be a reality one day.
It happened!
Thanks Ziming for uploading this. It made me honor Yu Suzuki even more. Yu Suzuki needs to make shenmue 3 and finish his dream of shenmue.
At last the whole G4 icons for Yu Suzuki is finally up THANK YOU Ziming I have been waiting to see this for a long time

Yu Suzuki is a true pioneer of gaming
@Bristecom People like Yu Suzuki are an inspiration to many gamers and developers and with the legacy he has it's no suprise as to why
shenmue was too far ahead of its time! it was a experience like never before, an on eof my greatest games ever! any one who loves cinema, an gaming, an music, an interactive art owes it to themselves to experience shenmue 1an2! i think if yu suzuki would make shenmue 3 now, an with all the mod cons of gaming today it would be a monster hit, all over the world unlike the original which was only famous in japan, an amongst hardcore gamers, like me, today the world would love a open world SHENMUE3!

I think we can safely say no one has done more for the gaming industry with the exception of Miyamoto.

feeling nostalgic right now watching this... WE WAIT THE FINAL OF SHENMUE... dont be cruel Sega
shenmue is the most beautiful game ever, yu suzuki is a genius
thank you Yu Suzuki
18:00 What the fuck is this guy talking about? The Xbox version of Shenmue 2 is the only version WITH American voice acting.
+JerryTerrifying i know shulk
Hey, dumbasses, English voices aren't always done by American voice actors.
@showti He is currently working on a couple of things that we know about. 1 being Shenmue Gai/City and also a kinect fighting game. He has also just made a new studio that actually has many people who worked with him on the first shenmue. Fingers crossed!

william stewart I've good news for you

@stargazersoul He's so underappreciated by modern gamers. When he left Sega last month there was barely any comment on it in the games industry.

sensei yu suzuki, domo, domo arigato
watching things like this makes me want shenmue3 right now.
blackmacrokid Good news, pal.
Shenmue II on Xbox WAS dubbed in English with the same voice actors as Shenmue on Dreamcast... Microsoft was just the publisher.
Legend.
I would take Shenmue 3 over any game out right now! This series was that good, Yu Suzuki is a true legendary game creator!
Yu was a cute baby.
Go Yu!!
Awesome! Maybe one day Shenmue will continue! Say your prayers Lan Di!
20:30 oh shit i got some big GOOSBUMPS at you better not be lying at
Makes you wonder... What would have happened had he passed his dentist's test? We wouldn't have anything by him. Strange how things happen.
One day the homebrew hackers will have Shenmue I running off Dreamcast SD card and I will play it through again start to finish.
Let Shenmue 3 happen, please! Thanks for the video.
@SheepheadCG Thanks, great news for his new studio. I hope Sega continues to invest on him.
It says shenmue 2 wasn't in english on xbox...but I played it in english. Did I hear that wrong or did they make a mistake?
He left Sega because he finally got tired of their mis-management.
On the best on G4! Was this filmed in 2003?
Since they haven't brought Shenmue 1 & 2 to the PSN/Xbox Live Arcade, I believe that SEGA is saving them and Shenmue 3 for their rumored mysterious new console. Just imagine Shenmue a launch title for it, I would buy it and the new console first day. Who else thinks this might happen ^_^?
@Vergilzelkin I would pay $100 for Shenmue 3. Along with the cost of the new system and ports of 1 and 2.
God save to Yu Suzuki, l'll give you money for SHENMUE 3, only to Yu, no sega.
.....shenmue...3.......one day..
@FoundationsofPause Same here. I hope the rumors turn out to be true.
Awesome!!!
Does anyone know what are the current projects of Yu or his last work in videogame ?
My favorite Sega studio has gotta be SEGA-AM2!
@Balzak802 oh no!! are u sure he's leaving next month? Do you have any idea why that is? or what he plans to do after leaving?
G4 for had the best shows. Now G4 turned into ESquire. WACK
Why did you stop uploading new videos, man?

This guy (I hate how he talks) says something about "VF's Master System games that were just like cool story books?" what the hell is he talking about?

In before people come back to this cuz Shenmue 3
I'm Ready to pay too!!
who tf is that middle part guy? why does he have the most screen time? he really has no idea what he's talking about.
It's quite sad that he insisted the English voice acting for Shenmue be done in japan. With so few professional English voice actors in Japan, amateurs were brought in leading to many of the voices being almost comical.
