Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu Kenjutsu Shinbukan Dojo demonstration by during the 2017 40th all Japan Aikido Kobudo Demonstration at the Nippon Budokan.
-- Official presentation by the Kobudo association --
Founded by Iizasa Choisai Ienao, a famous spearman and swordsman, in the 15th century, it is one of the oldest Japanese martial arts. The current headmaster is for reasons of health not teaching and replaced by the mainly representative instructor Nobutoshi Otake
What is particular in this sword school and visible in the movements and postures of the duelists, is that the techniques are have developed with and for Samurai wearing the so called Yoroi, (armor), weighing around 35 kg, standing on uneven ground. This slows down and restricts the movement greatly and the attacking areas include by the armor uncovered sensitive points.
    -- Practionners --
Iizasa Yasusada (representative Soke, not practicing)
    Iizasa Kota
    Otake Nobutoshi
    Kyoso Shigetoshi
    Arano Shoji

Just as a note. At 8:32 notice how quickly and fluidly he moves laterally to the side with the short sword. Very impressive.

Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu is just one of my favourite Ryu-Ha in all of Kenjutsu.
Closely followed by Yagyu Shinkage Ryu and Niten Ichi Ryu.
I really admire those schools and their connection to real battle. Their moves are not that fancy and all Kata have enormous practical use.
Itsutsu no Tachi surely is one of the most famous Kata in the whole world of martial arts.
Always great to see Suwari no Kamae

During the naginata jutsu part, why does the naginata holder keep spinning? Whats the logic behind that?

Thanks for the upload. A very fluid skill they have developed. I like to imagine all the hidden kills within the kata.

@Daniel kader good point. could also be situational awareness/keeping others at bay with a naginata sweep kinda thing.

They are not fighting : they're practising kata in which moves are all both defense and attack and in which - to avoid killing each other - substitute or distanced targets are aimed for rather than actually going for the head or wrist. But the practioner is aware of the subtext.
