I have both and played them both. UT99 is the most nostalgic one because of the atmosphere, music and graphics.. so 90s!! every time I play it it feels like I can feel the 1999/2000 period 😢 Quake 3 btw is the one that feels less old, its still really enjoyable nowadays and it’s simplistic thing won after all those years.
Loved the fact that it also consistently ran well (even if your system requirements weren't up there), UT99 was a classic ... but so was Q3 - was such a hard comparison to make!! ✌️John

I commend you for providing a decisive personal preference. I also respect those who prefer Quake III, but I think as a total experience (graphics, gameplay, mods, atmosphere) Unreal 99 offered more and did it in the most friendly way. The only reason it got there was because of the competition that Id Software provided, which was shown through the rocky development of Unreal. I'm glad they were both successful, and it's such a shame that arena shooters are largely dead compared to Overwatch, Call of Duty, and Counter Strike clones.
Thanks for watching this one & for the feedback - grew up playing both of these shooters, some great times ... yes, hope the arena shooter genre experience a resurgence! John 👍
You'd do well to own and play either, but... I'd suggest UT99 for those who aren't likely to sink lots of time in learning the game as a skill. It's the better choice if you wanted to LAN with the boys or mess around with it for a handful of hours before shelving it again for a awhile. Q3A is the obvious choice for anyone who enjoyed the arena shooter genre and made a habit of playing it on the regular. The skill ceiling, and slowly reaching it, is ultimate reward for those who made Quake their main go-to game. P.s. Good analysis brother! Yeah it's a hot take no matter which game you choose as the winner. I'm a Quake guy, but you were right to spotlight how much better UT is aside of the movement mechanics (which are still quite fun tbf). Aesthetics, weapons, music, maps... UT knew how to stand out!
Cheers for checking it out bro - was a hard vid to make (so subjective ultimately ...) thought it was an interesting concept to discuss - this was more a homage video to be honest ... was such a cool time in gaming!✌️
I like both equally I think. But atleast ID still supports Quake with remasters. Epic Games ditched Unreal Tournament and acts like it doesnt exist anymore. Not cool! Fortnite is so lame compared to unreal. Quake is still thriving thanks to ID and support. Gotta go with Quake for that reason alone in 2024.
it's always funny to see these sort of reviews dismiss Quake II as the OG Arena Shooter. It really defined the modern genre more than any game before it. Not to dismiss Doom, it was just not even close to what Quake II delivered.
😮As you said, it's all about personal preference. U.T 99 and U.T. 2004 were and are my go to games. Btw, I'm 59.Epic just pulled their support for all U.T. games except for U.T.3, the worst U.T. game ever launched. Thank the heavens there is a wild, fanatical online community for both games. Noobs, buy these games while they still exist. Btw, shame on you Epic, hope your greed shows the profit you intended. Is Fortnite next? Doubt it, greedy bastards. Where's Fatality1?
UT '99 and UT 2004 hold a special place, regardless of age ... it's a bummer that Epic decided to pull the plug on support except for the UT3 (which I also didn't like). Glad we still have some dedicated online communities keeping the classics alive! Man yes ... remember growing up & watching Fatality1 wreck peeps / he was big at some point - I think he also had his own motherboard range at some point ... but yep he's kinda been mia lately!
UT was such a special game - I still remember the exact day I got that one (had a pentium 3 / Voodoo 3 GFX and was blown away by the graphics back then haha) - good times! ❤️
Thanks for watching man - I appreciate your passion for Quake 3 Arena, it's true that Quake 3 Arena played a massive role in defining what an "Arena shooter" is. The game 100% had an incredible run in terms of both sales and tournament longevity! However, let's not dismiss Unreal Tournament '99 completely ... while it may not have had the same tournament span as Quake 3, it still has a dedicated fan base and brought its own unique flavor to the genre (that's a fact). Many gamers, including myself, have fond memories of both games - look, each had its strengths and contributed differently to the FPS landscape. Quake 3 from a competitive scene AGAIN were unrivaled, but overall Unreal Tournament '99 had a number of strengths especially around it's innovation. Both games deserve respect and needs to be celebrated in their own right bro // this was more me paying homage to both by pitting them up against each other ... if it had to go down the wire which one stood out more? / This breakdown was focused on that. ✌️
Counter Strike is also an extremely popular game, still..so what? Does that make it really the best? Or one of them? By this logic, why would Ocarina of Time be considered a masterpiece? I don't see how Quake 3 is really better than Unreal Tournament..UT offers better graphics, 2 firing modes, many more game types. It feels better to play, it's fun as all hell and I really feel it offers way more. Ut99 all the way. Also if you check "the internet", UT has better reviews overall. Which doesn't surprise me in the slightest :)
Dude again with the great game comparison. These two were my PC go-to before Half-Life came out. And Ex Plus Alpha & Rival Schools on PS1. The term Rockser Socksers will not go a miss with this youtube video.

With you on that ... would be EPIC if they could somehow bring UT99 back via some sort of a remaster similar to what they did for Quake!
Well... Not exactly. They had an agreement with OldUnreal Team, who still making patches and fixes nowadays, as I know.
Amen. Epic is a disgrace today.
Possibly cus any UT game after UT2004 kinda sucked...
Unreal Tournament is the winner in every single aspect. Can´t change my mind 😛
UT99 is a classic for sure!!
I like both of them but unreal tournament was my go to i found it more fun
