Yes Helan Zhen indeed good looking. Got the right role for him _ those dark eyes befitting the character of Turkic descent. Really like ke this guy _ his undying love for the Princess to the extent of sacrifice life for her _ though die hard enemy of the General, but a saviour of the Princess .

The extreme tensed relation between Awu, Xiao Qi and He Lan Zhen is very interesting, in my mind worth of a spin-off mini-series, a psychological thriller, going deeper into the love-hate-kill-save-abuse-mercy-cruelty-tenderness triangle between the tree of them. All three are scarred in different ways. A bit of Stockholmsyndrome too, maybe, on Awu's side? Noble women like Princess Awu, could have an important role as "ambassadors" and "intermediaries", be it that they were used as pawns between men in marriage. Princess Taihe (9th century, Tang dynasty) was kidnapped twice by an ancient Turkic people (see Wikipedia). And yes, He Lan Zhen (Justin Yuan/Yuan Hong) definitely is a very attractive bad guy.
He truly loves her andshe brings out the loving, gentle, and protective side of him.
It’s an obsession, she’s a prize that he must have. She said no many times, since they were in Huizhou. He still didn’t get the message. Any man who uses women and children as shields/hostages to get what he wants and willing to kill another man to have his wife, can never be kind. He is a snake and will always be a snake.

It is much more complex than that. The romantic love thing with the flowers is superficial show-off maybe, but to my feeling this goes deeper, and this part of the story is very difficult to understand, and has all kinds of loose ends. During captivity Awu showed He Lan Zhen her "soft heart" too, and this connected to his loving mother, and sister. This may have opened him towards her.
The princess was in a dangerous situation in hulan all thanks to helan Zhen . Using other people to kill the husband and kidnapped her again.

This idiot of a man still trying to win her heart by ‘gifting’ with flowers he brought from Great Cheng and plant them there. He also told her to forget about her dead husband and just see the person in front of her who will care and protect her. She then asked how did Xiao Qi die. He said people from Great Cheng and he also mentioned people from the palace (Emperor, Empress and Empress Dowager) murdered him. When asked how he knew that, he said it’s obvious cos Xiao Qi had a lot of enemies. She also asked whether did he actually see Xiao Qi being killed. He said no. She said he’s lying and he himself can’t be sure that Xiao Qi actually died. She didn’t accept his gift and walk away (that’s my gal 😁😁)

Why? Who knows? My guess is that Rebel Princess may be a more attractive title for an international audience including non-Chinese. It is not the original title of the series. In the intro to each episode you see the real title in Chinese: 上阳赋, in Pinyin: Shang Yang Fu. What the exact meaning of Shang, Yang and Fu is, you have to ask a native or bi-langual speaker. Different names in use for these series that I found sofar are: Emperor Phoenix , Di Feng Ye , Shang Yang Fu , Jiang Shan Gu Ren , Jiāngshān Gùrén , 帝凰业 , 帝王业 , 江山故人 , Monarch Industry. This series is based on an internetnovel (2007) by Mei Yu Zhe . I also came across several titles for the novel too: "Emperor's Conquest" and "Imperial Industry". All in all, watching these series, there seems to be nothing rebellious about the princess. A critic, WandereR, on My DramaList suggest to rename the series to "The Doting Wife". Her only rebelling, as a female, is in the first 10 episodes, when she makes explicit that she wants to choose her marriage partner, in stead of an arranged marriage. Her not wanting to marry the crownprince Zi Long is the starter for all kinds of palace intrique. Ah, I see that they will both rebel, much later in the series.
The princess knew that this barbarian prince is loathing to kill her husband eversince . But here that she was kidnapped again she never suspect him even a hint of what was going on . It is said that she’s smart but as I watch the drama I can say this princess shangyang due to her tender heartedness is dumb silly .

He Lan Zhen presented her with a gift but she asked him how do you expect me to accept your gift? He tells her to forget her dead husband. He is never coming back. He will protect her and take care of her from now on. She demands to know how her husband died. He said her husband had too many enemies and everyone wanted him dead. However he admits to her he did not personally witness her husbands death. Awu refuses to believe he is dead and stated that He Lan Zhen is lying to her.

For Shang Yang Fu, she also had a title of Lady of Shang Yang before she got married. For the rebel part, perhaps because she was not a princess who cared to get pulled into the power struggles or cater to her Wang family's politics. She did things her way based on what her own convictions and values were.
