Apulanta, Leevi and the leavings, Tehosekoitin, Amorphis, Nightwish, Stratovarius, HIM, Eppu Normaali are some great bands from Finland
You'll notice that especially many of the 1960's and 1970's songs were Finnish covers of English-language original songs, because few people spoke and understood English back then. Same goes on the pop music side.
Holy crap, there were so many legendary songs from the last half a century which we still play and party on. And actually there's even more. I hadn't even realized how good our history was in regards of rock music. I mean i knew it was good, but.. when you stop and think about it, it's even better than you think.
I'm proud of them boys and girls who did all of that.
Considering the case of Nightwish, it's not just music but a journey. If you're ready to dive into the rabbit hole, I'd suggest you start with Ghost Love Score from Wacken 2013. After that you should receive a response from Gabriel with suggestions to move forward. Follow them or go own way, that'll be up to you.

Yeah, it's totally brilliant and quite underrated - so much practice needed, so smooth execution! Some of the shifts are very ingenious in terms of the lyrics, like the next song picks up on the previous etc.

Those guys are great! They had this band Kalevauva where they took their lyrics straight from a notorious internet forum. The lyrics were hilarious, but the talent is the thing that gets me.

Just today I had to keep myself from singing "Espoolainen on espoolainen eikä vaihtaisi sitä kuin korkeintaan kauniaislaisuuteen" when my colleague introduced themselves as being from Espoo. When they said they used to live in Kauniainen before I almost burst out laughing.

It says there that the video was filmed in one take. According to the band, their mission is to promote Finnrock. They performed the medley first for elementary school students in the school's gym. Apparently the show was a success. There's quite a lot of Finnish music behind the language barrier awaiting. To even try to make it abroad used to mean, that the bands had to sing in English. There were some exceptions like some 80s Finnish Punk/hardcore bands, which were popular in Latin America despite the Finnish language. To sing in English wasn't an easy task either, because still in the 70s Finns didn't speak English that well. Luckily some British musicians like Jim Pembroke (Wigwam) moved to Finland and they could do the vocals. In the 70s Finnish Progressive Rock gained some attention abroad and there were some collaborations like Pekka Pohjola's and Mike Oldfield's. In the 80s the promotion was still a problem. With right people behind them, Hanoi Rocks was the first Finnish band about to make it big abroad until the tragedy occurred. In the 90s more Finnish bands became popular abroad. Now there's even cracks in the language barrier and interest towards Finnish language. Here's an English version of an 80s Finnrock hit song: "Juice Leskinen - You Never Get Out Of This Life Alive". You might like Suomisaundi genre (Finnish psychedelic trance): "Huopatossu Mononen - Paluumatkailija". Also games and movies can nowadays promote Finnish language: "My Summer Car: Heikki Mustonen - Routainen maa" and "Eisenherz Marko Haavisto & Poutahaukat - Paha Vaanii".

Most of the popular exported Finnish music is either rock or metal, so I guess that's why people think that's all we listen to. As far as I know, the most sold Finnish artists abroad are Nightwish (symphonic metal), Children of Bodom (melodic death metal), Sunrise Avenue (rock), HIM (gothic rock), The Rasmus (rock). It's a couple of years since I saw the list somewhere, so my memory is a bit hazy, but I'm pretty sure Nightwish is number one and Children of Bodom is second. Either way, they have all sold millions of albums abroad.
I've seen others react to Nightwish Ghost Love Score live at Wacken 2013 which surely is justified choise and displays their live talent as well. Song Nemo that was in this video has been closer to my heart personally, maybe due to it having been released at a time my taste in music was developing.
Check out Poets of the Fall's song Carnival of Rust. Nightwish of course. Band called Apulanta is one of my favourites.
I would suggest cheking out HIM (band), Nightwish (band) and The Rasmus (band). Those are my favorite ones and also most versatile in my opinion. They sing in english so it's easier for more ppl to understand. But if you want to hear some Finnish lyris Pelle Miljoona and Eppu Normaali are good and Dingo is also awesome band. Hope you have fun discovering more Finnish music.
Nightwish Ghost Love Score live at Wacken 2013... if you want to react to Nightwish, let that be the first one. It is quite breathtaking opus.
But if i had to choose one Finnish rock band that is above others: Kingston Wall and it is not even close. One of the most influential bands in Finnish rock history. They only made 3 albums before the front man jumped from a church tower but those 3 are... something else. It is psychedelic "space rock".
One special guy/band on this list is J. Karjalainen, who has been making music since 1981 so over 4 decades. His song "Mennyt mies" was on this list. He's considered by many as one of the biggest rockers whose songs have also been radio friendly. I'll add links to two of his music videos here:

Nightwish is my fav band of all times since 1997! Love them through every changing singer and other band members, the ”brains” of NW has allways stayed the same, Tuomas Holopainen ❤ Check their Storytime live from Wacken 2013 or music video Noise from the heavier side.

My favourite Finnish rock singer is Tarja Turunen. She is actually rock/metal/classical singer.

She has been around since the late 90's though at first she was part of the most famous Finnish metal band, Nightwish. You actually heard a bit of Nightwish in this video. It was in 11:53.
And Nemo would be a good one to start with Nightwish. Just note that throughout the years they have had 3 different lead vocalist. Tarja was the first one.
Also you mentioned that you might have heard of the Rasmus. They are quite famous in Europe too. They had a song called In the Shadows. It was a huge it. It was everywhere.
And the band Sunrise Avenue that also played here briefly were hugely popular in Germany.... like almost everyone knew them there. Unfortunately they quit last year.
Nightwish - Dark chest of wonders, definitely one of their best songs. Even live.

I'd say you could pick 5 or 10 songs from this that you got the best impressions, and find those from youtube. Artist and name in in the bottom left so easy to find Listen them completely, and also get a translation of lyrics (after listening it in finnish first). That would make an interesting video. :D

Black diamond was in my opinion a glaring omission from the video. Was playing everywhere in the late 90´s. Also, no Children of Bodom nor Amorphis? These guys had a different experience of the 90´s, I guess.
So I started to learn Finnish recently (really interesting language and all the vowels actually help me go through pronouncing longer words slower before attempting a full speed use), I will physically sit here and try to pronounce the Finnish in the titles just to see how close I get (because I know I'm always a little off due to physically being unable to roll the letter 'r' when I speak).
When I asked friends (both Finnish and not Finnish) for music recommendations, it was in fact mostly rock and/or metal of various kinds. Finnish folk metal is actually really good for me to listen to when I just want to chill out and if anyone has more music recommendations please reply to this comment.
In the 1980's was one band from Raisio in Finland! It was SIG famous songs are Tiina menee naimisiin, Vuosisadan rakkaustarina etc... also Korroosio was from Raisio... So you can say Raisio is home of Rock music..

Ghost Love Score, Live at Wacken
If I would have to name one rock and roll song from Finland. Just one, it would be "Get on" from group "Hurriganes" 1974 at Tavastia club.
It was the most enegetic finnish band ever. Raw rock and roll, plain and simple. This song has been voted as "the best rock song in Finland " over and over again. The energy is huge and the year is 1974. I was 11 years and it kicked my ass already back then and all the boys in the neighbourhood were crazy and most of the girls too for this band. Pure essence of Rock.
And the story behind this song is interesting. Hurriganes was making their Album at the studio in Stockholm. Studio time was really expensive back then and this band has no backround yet and budget was tight. They had made their recordings but the producer said, that there would be room for one song in the album. however, they did not have one. And there was 20 minutes of studio time left. Well, Remu, the leading man, drummer and singer said, that, OK, we will make one song now. He ordered the guitarist Kisse to make a Solo and started himself with a drums. Then he just made some meaningless lyrics out of his hat along the way and he was not really good in english.
True story, and the song is brilliant. But the energy at This film. You can feel it 50 years later.

Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

The singer used to be in a rivaling team in my local music pub quiz. I remember him having quite insane knowledge on basic (rock) music history, I guess it shows here.

Only regonized a few songs from 60-80 but basically had heart every one of them since 80's 🙉 Born in '83.
That's interesting since I thought most of the 60s to 80s songs were from '90s 😃 I'm born in 1990 and we had always radio on in my home when I was kid so that might have affected it since of course they didn't only play the newest music there 🙂
Absolute classics, especially from the 80's! If I would recommend only two bands from the list, then Kingston Wall (because they're legendary) and Eppu Normaali (also legendary). The latter have very clever lyrics in finnish, if you're aiming to practice the language ;) Also gives an idea about what the 'Suomirokki' concept is all about.
I have to agree with you! Kingston Wall is the best Finnish band ever existed. Guitarist, bassists and the drummer were all best or at least top 3 musicians in Finland.

Absolutely brilliant video in one shot. Of those bands, I would recommend Kingston Wall the most, and if you listen, you should actually listen to the whole album or the trilogy. If you're interested in something a little tougher, then Children Of Bodom or any of Alexi "Wildchild" Laiho's productions, Bodom After midnight, The Local Band, kylähllut, Klamydia, yms

4:58 was voted one of best finnish song it have Sam Yaffa at bass and Andy Mc Coy on guitar both went in Hanoi Rocks in 1980 after this mega hit.
If I had to pick a favourite I think I would pick J.Karjalainen. He's been making music for a long time so there's a wide variety of styles in that discography.

Quite a few songs probably sounded familiar because it's the literal same music you've heard, just with translated lyrics. lol That's kinda been a staple across genres for much of the 1900s.

My absolute favourite out of all those bands is Kingston Wall. Check it out, you won’t be disappointed.
Finnish tv shows have long history for house band to make similar like this combilation, but normally like each song is played like 30-60 seconds, used to be end finale etc in gala style saturday night entarnment for decades, nowadays near unhear...

It's interesting they counted Kingston Wall's pysch rock and Eppu Normaali's early punk stuff and Nightwish's metal to the suomi rock potpourri, but then they missed something like Alwari Tuohitorvi and a couple of interesting ones from the 70's/80's. In fact it's really odd what newer songs they picked and skipped. Like Nightwish was borderline dead metal band in 2004, even though they've kept going. They had like 10 years worth of unique music before Nemo, during that time they were pioneers. Lordi was also rather old rock band at the point of Hard Rock Hallelujah. And like you said, it's tough when you hear something that catches your ear and they immediately switch away. There are a couple of really golden songs on this list and artists that didn't get to shine at all. Like if they played early 90's YUP who became regular top 1 in early 2000's, it'd have something really interesting, but they skipped the whole band and 20 years of unique and popular music. But maybe too difficult for them to play. Which I wouldn't want to believe though. And they picked the least interesting song from CMX, the one that's the go to pop radio ballad while they have quite wide range and progressive take on their discography. Absoluuttinen nollapiste should've also been there. And WÖYH!

From bands my parents listened to I'd definitely check Eppu Normaali and Kolmas nainen. Kauko Röyhkä. From 90's I'd pick up YUP, CMX, Absoluuttinen nollapiste (they have a great song, translated: I gave CPR to a sheep in Ipswich). And of course you can't skip Kingston Wall if you like old psychedelic rock, fantastic players and three albums loyal to Hendrix, Page etc. From 2010's WÖYH! Extremely catchy and funny songs played by really good musicians. I'd say those are some foundational artists that shaped Finnish rock landscape. And some of the more interesting and pioneering/progressive artists. But is also missing a lot of them. I suppose Kuha. would also be a very interesting artist, but not sure how well known they are, they do have some unique and good stuff though. I call them professor prog, just because they make quite scientific material at times, like one of the albums is titled "For the Science, Against Fiction" and another one is after a children's fairytale book "Calpih sells black light". And Maija Vilkkumaa is a kickass rock artist. Tiktak was also on the video. I don't count metal bands like Nightwish, that'd become too off topic and long of a list.
There were 6 songs i haven´t heard propably ever (all those were from this side of millenium), but i could regonize all the others. Most very classical finnish karaoke songs and if you would sit down to listen karaoke somewhere you would propably hear many of those. Funny "little" medley tho.
Jarkko Ahola is the best rock tenor from Finland in my opinion. Amazing voice he has. He has his channel in You Tube. You should check him up also🙂.
Without Hanoi Rocks there wouldn't be Guns 'n roses.
And then there's korea cultural exchage program, that we send Sielunveljet and peer gynt in 1989. That were 1st 2 western bands in N.korea. long before that slovenian failed facist art rock group (whos name i don't remember).
Your starting point could, no should, hmm... actually MUST be Nightwish - Ghost Love Score (live at Wacken 2013). As you can see there are already a "few" comments about this song. After that you could try almost any band on this list. For some classic rock´n´roll, I would personally recommend you to try a song or two from Hurriganes. After all, Remu Aaltonen (founder of Hurriganes) is the Grand Old Man of finnish rock.
Some of my favorites are for sure Juice Leskinen and Pelle Miljoona. Legendary artists both. You need ugly men to make beautiful music.

Finn's tend to be quite keen on music. Atleast for a 5 million population the music industry is large compared to other similar countries. Rock, Metal, Punk, heavy and everything is known around the world most. Larger towns host atleast some band pretty much every night. Helsinki, Tampere, Turku you can find something by genre pretty much weekly!
Eppu Normaalii rough translation would be like Eddy Normal. Started as Punkrock band, but then became like genre icon to what suomirokki aka finnrock as genre means, Started in late '70s and still somewhat semi active..... 3 brother and few friends.

The songs went from "oh yeah, my dad loves these songs!" to "Oh aye, I grew up with these!" to "man I hated this one when it came out, think I was 25 or something and it just sounded childish" really fast. 😂
Truly impressive effort. The band was trolling a bit I think though. The songs were all iconic but couple of them quite far from rock genre.

Nightwish is a good band to react to. I love the Phantom of the Opera with Tarja Turunen (no hate on other vocalists, I'm just old). But Nightwish Phantom of the Opera with Tarja Live performance, I'll guarantee it'll be alot.

It's just like saying that the Proclaimers is the best Scottish band ever.
