Wow quite the phantom in the thumbnail. And more of those rare fibre optic split arrows. Nice find.

I may just have found the channel that can answer a question that I've had for years, so here goes? How do part time signals start-up and switch off. I've considered many options, but failed to find a definitive answer. I've always assumed that both traffic flows start up with a yellow aspect that goes red, then one starts the normal red/red+amber/green and they alternate after that BUT how do you get to the point that they turn off WITHOUT potentially starting a conflict?

The part time signals would start off with an amber before going to red. This will allow drivers 3 seconds to react before the red light. Then it will run the stages set in the control box. Usually timed or manually controlled by the Highways authority. For them turning off, the road layout would have to be suitable to accommodate controlled traffic by having a stop line further back. Uncontrolled with give way lines as it would then revert back to a normal junction.

@@trafficsignalchannel I get the start-up - it was as I described and has surmised, but the switch-off remains a mystery as you haven't explained what a pair of lights are doing simultaneously before going off completely. Obviously one is red while the other is green, but at some point there must be a conflict when no light is displayed to traffic that was being held at red.
This IS a genuine question as a friend owns one of the biggest private driving schools in the UK and couldn't find an exact answer either.

@@trafficsignalchannel how long do incandescent traffic light bulb really last for?

The bulbs used are 12volts & 50watts which, by looking at multiple manufactures state that the average lifespan is 4000 hours however, it depends on environment and usage i.e a pedestrian crossing will mostly stay on green than oppose to a junction which will change frequently. The control box will usually reduce the voltage on some sites to dim the bulbs at night as they don't need to be ss bright.

@@trafficsignalchannel the pedestrian crossing where I live the green bulbs on either side of the crossing do not go dim at night I've had to report that crossing a few time due to either a burned-out green bulb or burned-out Redman which is still burned out it did have an incandescent bulb in it but I think it should have an LED bulb in it as they last longer then the incandescent bulb do
