- Oleksandr Taran, 68, who goes by the callsign "Grandpa", leads a volunteer Ukrainian unit of men aged 60 and above and are therefore considered too old for the army. At a time when Kyiv is lowering the draft age as enthusiasm for signing up is waning after two years of war, these men are fighting the invading Russian forces for free.

They know they fight for their freedom and existence, anyone that understands that know it. The younger generation never experienced how it was to live under Russian during the Soviet era, these men know it and knows the price of not fighting back.
My appreciation for these men.

Most of these guys have combat experience ...they are not slouches,and usually don't get flustered under fire
These men understand ruzzian tyranny and the wisdom to realize they must stand for there children’s freedom and sovereignty
I’m a real supporter of once country and it’s actually sad and a little bit embarrassing that the younger people don’t want to fight for their country. They let the fight to the oldest one and then after they expect to come home to Ukraine and continue a great life.
If you love your country, you need to be there when the country need you.

This is like a lot of Peshmerga units. Also time had proven over and over that you should be scared of old men in a young men's game because youth and exuberance is no match for old age and treachery.

Wrong these are older men that volunteer and don't get paid for their service they are proud examples of what it means to be a Ukrainian.
Compare these MEN to the cry-baby wienies who tried to force their way into Poland and Lithuania a couple years ago, claiming their countries in ME and Africa were soooo dangerous that they had to leave their children, wives and mothers behind. Men like these Ukrainian men are why the rest of us are free.

@@ninzki143they haven't even drafted young working men. The drafting age is 27+. The average soldier age in this war is 45+.
So so cute…but this is war and physical condition counts for so much more. So the romanticism of the story belies the brutality of the real ground experience. Sad that both young and old will perish in this Boris Johnson war.
I admire their courage but it's futile.
