I totally understand what you mean. I have CP and I still feel very self conscious about how I walk, even though I have accepted who I am. I do feel like I wish people could just ignore the way I walk. Everyday I'm mindful of how it feels to me, but I wonder how other people see me. When I'm out of my house I use forearm crutches. I feel like my legs are bowling balls some days. I drag my toes so all of my shoes are ripped up in the front.
I am just discovering the CP community and I find it wonderful and supportive. I hope to see more videos from you. Congrats on going to college! I went to undergrad and now I'm getting my Masters. Rock on! :-)

I have cp too! for such a long time I'd find myself crying because sometimes I just feel so isolated because I've never met or seen anyone else my age with this god damn disability.
I don't feel so alone anymore!
Thankyou so much for posting all this stuff!

I don't have cp but you know, you should be very proud of your self for presenting your self in such a huge audience like that!! I fully support any one who has cp and it puts a chill down my spine at how determined and motivated you are and to be able to keep your self esteem up despite some limiting factors!! God has heard your silent plea and has worked through you :)

wow, it takes courage to post a video of yourself walking. Having mild CP myself a i'm not that aware of my walking till i see myself on a security screen or a window of a store and think "omg, is that really how i walk?" Great vids btw, i can really relate to a lot of what your telling. Being 33 now, im finaly starting to see the impact CP has had on my life and accepting it that it does, not only phycically but especially mentally, having ignored it for so long, trying to be 'normal'. CP can be tiresome, but trying to be 'normal' is even more so. Again: thanks for sharing. Keep it up!

Jentry, I have Cerebral Palsy as well. Currently, I am attending Sweet Briar College. While attending high school, I never really felt alone or isolated. Although, since starting college, somehow, that changed. Seeing this video and how you are no different from myself, helps me. Thank you.

Cerebral palsy too and I basically walk the same way before I got put in the wheelchair cuz of my hip got worse throughout the years of having hip dysplasia and now I'm in a wheelchair to get around but thank you and keep your head up keep doing what you doing it really helps and encourages a lot of people and me included thank you I never got to go to college or really have a daytime job cuz I have learning disability and mental illness but I do live in my own and take care of my own stuff so I want to start a UA-cam channel myself and try to encourage people. like you do and other people with cerebral palsy. please keep doing what you are doing it's very encouraging thank sincerely

Yes, I can relate to it being frustrating when I walk! I'm 39 years old (eek) and I still get shocked to see myself walking. Right now, I'm working on my fear of falling. Long story short, about 15 years ago, I developed some bad habits, and I basically avoided walking (I used my computer chair to get around, and even resorted to crawling). So I am working on walking and my tremendous fear of falling. It's a slow process, but I am confident than I can beat it one day.
Hope you're doing well in college. :)

Great video, Jentry! I think its so important to talk about our physical differences in having CP because it breaks down those barriers while showing others with CP that they are not alone. Well done. Good luck in college! Have fun! Have fun! Have fun!

I have CP too. A mild form, but I walk exactly like you. I tend to be self conscious only if people stare or I see myself walking, which is what you said too. It's interesting how you don't notice how different you are until you actually look at yourself. This was a great video, just explaining a little of what CP is like. It helped me a lot though, knowing that there are other people out there. Thank you

  • @DeedeeLuvsSidney
    @DeedeeLuvsSidney 9 років тому +2

I feel exactly the same way you do. I don't realize there's any difference until someone points it out to me by asking or if I see myself on video. I'm like, "Wow that's me!" it's also interesting when people ask me, "What is it like to live with CP?" I really don't know how to answer it because my life is all I know.

A). I accumulated so much STUFF in college. You'd be surprised how much you can fit in a small dorm room.
B). Awesome video! If I focus really hard I can walk pretty straight... at least I think it's straight until someone asks me what's wrong with my legs. I never really paid attention to how I walk until I had a gait analysis and they played a little stick figure cartoon of me walking. I was totally shocked! I walk like a velociraptor, but I've just decided to think of it as a swagger!

I have Spastic Diplegia CP too & walk preeeeetty similar to you...and I know exactly what you mean- I have had many a soul destroying moment when walking past big windows on buildings. Actually one of the worst for me is when I can see myself on CCTV cameras in shops. OH THE HORROR. When I was in school, I knew I had this really awesome Maths teacher because one day he had to video our class...I think for an assessment thing...

I just came across this video. I have CP also and, like you mentioned, from my perspective my walking doesn't seem that abnormal. But, when i do catch a glimpse in a window or mirror, I obviously see how unusual gait pattern is. When I concentrate on my walking, I can straighten up a little more but that is not my normal stride and it's a lot slower. ANyway, I'm going to watch more of your videos. Thanlks for sharing.

I think you're doing great! I hope you were able to get all your stuff moved in. My daughter has CP, and she just had a surgery that has changed her life. Her spasticity is permanently gone, she has no more pain, and she can move her ankles and do a beautiful heel strike now. I'm just a mom, not a doctor, but I want to tell everyone I know with CP about it! If someone hadn't told us about it, my daughter would still have pain from that awful spasticity. I'll come back with a link.

...walking in the classroom, and obviously my aide and I walked in like five minutes before everyone else... my class made him play the video back to us for laughs and the dude of a teacher purposefully fastwarded past the part where I walked in to save my tiny soul! Probably seems pretty insignifigant, but I always loved that teacher for that, ha! This was the longest UA-cam comment I've ever left in my life! Soooooorry! :D x

Thanks for sharing your video I use a power chair, and walker depending on how my legs are acting on a given day. I think with two small dogs its easier with the chair. My advice is just keep being true to yourself. people will stare because they are curious. once people get to know you they may know that you walk differently but most people get pass it. Moreover, enjoy your time in college may it be a great experience for you to meet classmates from all over the world.

Hiya, having CP myself I have to say I kinda envy your disposition. Hats off to you ma'am. I don't know that I could ever muster the guts to make a vid about it. I will however offer up a tip. YOGA! I know it may sound ludicrous or even seem impossible. However, mimicking some poses...granted nowhere near perfectly, has helped me a heck of a lot more than conventional stretching ever did. :D Good luck.

My wife has the same type CP as you. She is 57 years old and I met her 14 years ago. We got married just three years after we met. I've never let her CP dictate anything, but instead I allow her to set her own limitations (which are very few). I ride a motorcycle and since she cannot hold up a two wheeled motorcycle I bought her a trike. We travel on our motorcycles all over the country. We are both amused at people's faces when she hops off her motorcycle and begins walking. My wife is too well grounded to allow other people's stares to bother her.

Are you wearing socks or braces while walking? You were walking pretty well there, if a bit slowly. I have mild CP, but it's mostly ataxic. My muscles down in my legs are rather spastic at times so they just call it mixed-type. I limp occasionally and kids at school would stare when I was younger. I learnt to walk faster so I wouldn't fall over as much (and my dad walked really fast and would get annoyed when I and my sister & mum couldn't keep up). I have a crutch but don't always use it. They wanted me to use braces in school but I refused and my parents let me make my own decision (surprisingly), but they did nag me about it for a few years. Anyway, I know this video was uploaded awhile ago but I hope you're still doing well and college is fun (I just came across your account!).

Hello love your video. I am an adult with Mild Cerebral Palsy also. Did you walk with a cane as a child? I myself went from using a walker being a 2 year old, to walking OK with only minimal assistance. Now due to having problems I am back to using a walker when I am away from the house. But if I am with a friend they will offer to help me if I choose not to bring my walker.

Hello, of me to introduce myself my name is hilary. I was a college student from 2004- 2008 but not anymore I'm 28 years old. Apparently, it didn't work for me. I have cerebral palsy too its a mild form though. When I was younger I was able to walk without assistance having PT in all. My mom wanted me to get a service dog so we'll play and I was teamed up with the yellow lab named Connor in 2009. Use to use a harness for him but I the harness was too heavy and didn't work out. Who donated it to the organization where I got Conner, from. Since, my balance is getting bad (at times). Still use him because it's hard for me to bend over and pick things up. He wears service dog public. Have you considered applying for service dog? If you just google assistance dogs international, can't click on it regional chapters the United States and clicked on your state, and you should find a list of organizations that can help you. What you're thinking about for me to know how you're so quick with the United States the state was Ohio. Hope this helps. If you need any help please don't hesitate to inbox me on my UA-cam page.

I asked a friend to take a video of my walking when I was in college; I'll see if I can find it. It was taken more than 10 years ago. I also took a video him walking so I can see a difference. I was in front of the college gym. I totally understand being self conscious about see myself from a reflection, however not being that when I'm around friends. I do notice that people stare at me in public when I am alone rather than with friends and the same goes to comments people make from afar about my walking. My knees used to bend inward when I was a child but through therapy, I had improved my gait. I had no surgeries though; I went through walker, wheelchair (when I was a child and in more of a hurry), braces, shoe insoles, cane to no assistance needed.

I have CP also and I walk with out assistance and im 39 now. It seems tho the older I get the harder some things get like getting up off the floor or walking off a curb. As a kid i ran up n down stairs now i hate stairs and when its cold i get worse. Do you guys take any meds to loosen up your muscles? I dont cuz it seems it wouldnt really help. I had surgery as a kid but one made it worse wen the tried to loosen up my ankle on 1 leg now i drag it a bit. Anyways good for you for making this video, I tried once to show friends from facebook but I couldnt do it as you said it looks wore when you try to do it yourself LOL I think the balance part is the worst part, if that was normal Id never care how I walked. I have 2 kids now and been with my hubby for 22 years now. Some people see right thru our weird walk ;-) anyways thanks again for the great video.

people can be cruel about it. I'm sorry someone would say that to you, be thankful though because thats not the type of girl you'd want to date anyways, its very immature and I'm sure she didn't even realize how hurtful the things she was saying was, sadly theres not enough info on cp or awareness spread out there, there is hope though, theres no reason you won't find a girl who loves you beyond anything physical thats what real love consists of anyways, God bless you, cp doesn't define who you are at all or what you deserve or what you can and can't have.

I cant wear flip flops because my sister and mom say I walk without bending my feet but it's not noticeable unless I'm wearing flip flops and that's because of my cerebral palsy

how can i improve my balance? i have mild cp, (spastic diplegia) i can take steps and balance better due to lots of exercises that i've found here on YT. but how can i improve even more, so i can walk w/o assistance?? i feel i'm about there, i take steps, my body stops and i have to force myself to continue, like my brain is confused or something since i'm learning to take steps w/o the walker. any advice as to how i can speed up the process of walking on my own? thanks!

To be honest, your walk isn't as bad as you may think. If I didn't read the title I don't think I would've noticed. I have cp too and use a wheelchair. If I can figure out how to video myself. I might.

I have cerebral Palsy too. I am a retired college professor. I have used crutches and power wheelchair to get around. I taught Philosophy for 20 years. As an adjunct teacher in a community college. My disability has changed over the years and I broke my leg. I spent the better part of 3 years in a nursing home. You are a beautiful lady. I do not think you walk badly at all. It reminds how I walked when I a little one.

I have CP also and my walk is very similar to yours. I won't really called it weird. I call it walking with swag which if you look at it you can see why there is a swag tone about our type of walking :) Anyway, I have put a video on my channel of me walking so if you have time or if you want to then feel free to check it out! Thanks for these videos, they are really inspiration and I love how positive you are about life! Anyway, thanks again and I would love to watch any future videos! :)

...or something... you know like when people come in and judge the how good teachers are at teaching? Fahh I can't remember what they're called..it's pretty late here in Ireland hah my brain is gone...! But anyway, he was fucking awesome because in school I used to get out of classes a little earlier than everyone else so I had time to walk to my next class..so I'd sometimes arrive at the next one earlier...anyway, he had this camera set up and recorded our class from the time we all started...

You look fine to me I have cerebral palsy to in my legs and I guess I walk funny .but I am older and I am comfortable in my own skin don't let people shun tou or make you feel different you just be you . Your more than your cerebral palsy. Having c p does not define you .
