Maldivian NGO Soneva Namoona, founded by the not-for-profit Soneva Foundation, has spent the last five years spearheading positive change with remarkable results, from empowering zero-waste communities to advocating for sustainable waste management across the archipelago.
Established in 2019, Soneva Namoona combats the threat of marine plastic litter that plagues local islands, leading to detrimental effects on marine ecosystems. The NGO's mission focuses on three vital components: 'Reduce,' 'Recycle' and 'Inspire’, which aims to phase out single-use plastic, introduce sustainable waste processing mechanisms and nurture environmental stewardship and changemaker mindsets. Since its inception, Soneva Namoona has made significant strides, engaging with 22 islands across the Maldives, each at various stages in their pursuit of sustainable waste management. Notably, the initiative has prevented nearly 900,000 plastic bottles from entering landfills, recycled 459 tonnes of waste and reached 6,000 individuals for sustainable behaviour change.
