  • Monster flash flood intercepted with the flash flood guru David Rankin in New River, AZ just north of Phoenix! Monsoon insanity continues across Arizona and New Mexico with historic rainfall. Another major wave of heavy rain and storms is on the way for tomorrow. These flash floods have an incredible distinctive smell!

Creosote and sage. Growing up in Yuma, you could always tell where the storms were coming from. If it smelled like seawater or salt, the storm was coming up from El Gulfo de Santa Clara. If it smelled of creosote or sage then it was coming from across the desert either from El Centro or from Phoenix. If it smelled like dust, you closed up everything and made sure nothing could fly cuz a good haboob was coming.

Why you really should not camp during summer here in AZ. Just because it is not raining where you are at doesn't mean it is not pouring somewhere up North and all the water runs down hill. Too many slot canyons and box canyons that can become death traps during monsoon season. I love the Sonoran Desert. It is where I was born and raised but I also know from years of roaming, hunting and camping, the desert, regardless of time of year, will kill you if you are not careful. Camping on what appears to be high ground may not be that in the event of a sudden squall. AZ really is a truly beautiful and savage garden and as long as you educate yourself and take necessary precautions, the amount of fun and natural beauty you can have here is limitless. I have lived in numerous places courtesy of Uncle Sam(Air Force Brat and Marine Wife) but AZ has been and will always be home for me. There is nothing like it anywhere!!!

AWESOME VIDEO! Boy, you guys were lucky to have caught the start of the monster flash flood in that area.
From my camping experiences, I'm pretty familiar with the deserts here in California, and I learned fast that one needs to keep track of the weather forecast via a radio so your 4x4 doesn't get trapped in a wash that suddenly starts filling up with rapidly moving water which almost happened to me and my ex-husband when it began to rain unexpectedly while we were in Horse Canyon, and the only way back to civilization was to drive back through the water of Horse Creek.

The fact is that the rivers did not stop flowing, but the man made reservoirs and their levels ARE controlled, either by use, or simply opening or closing the gates to let the level go up or down. It's a great way to create fear, and since nobody can remember any amount of time these days, people buy into the fear hook line and sinker. I've seen Lake Mead at lower levels than now, and it wasn't that long ago...I've also seen it flowing over the spillways. I'm thankful for the rain. I am thankful that the animals finally get some relief. I live 2 miles from Water Wheel in Payson. Been some pretty heavy rain up here lately. Everyone please be extra cautious. Mind your surroundings. Remember a storm can be miles away and still cause a flash flood. If you see a storm you probably shouldn't be in the wash beds. Even if you don't Be Cautious. Always be mindful of higher ground. A place that might save your life.
