I always spray the ground connections on the lamps with Tectyl so that the contact does not corrode. I do that with all ground connections. Great video and nice tractor Steve. BR Olaf
Tractor came out nice, I know this is a working machine so you left out some of the dents in the bonnet/hood and fenders. Some will call it the 'patina'. Its a very solid machine and we appreciate all the hard work you put into it. In my childhood days in the late 60's in Uganda, I used to watch the mechanics do the rewiring of old British trucks, Leyland, Ford, Thames Traders etc in my father's workshop. And they were very good at it, looms from scratch, generators, testing etc. The traffic police (who would be waiting on their BSA motorcycles on main roads) were strict on commercial vehicles and every safety related component had to be working, or else a ticket was issued. The good old days, cheers.
Thanks for the comments and write up. Indeed as I stated before , I was not creating a show room or concours tractor ... So, I don't mind a few dents here and there . Although I took many out
I have enjoyed watching this project with you Steve, thank you for sharing it with us. looking forward to seeing 'Old Rusty' looking just as good. Michael.
Nice work on that old David Brown tractors its nice one 👍😎 My father still use here in Croatia old IMT 539 tractor its from 1984 and still work just fine 😁
I was operating on of those years ago when the bolts holding the front cowling onto the engine broke and shoved the bonnet and dash into the steering colom. Lucky no injuries.
Worth noting when crimping that type of connector onto a wire, it is best to put the cut side of the connector in the round part of the crimper, and the 'prong' side of the crimper should push into the solid side of the connector. If you reverse this, the prong tends to split the connector.
I think you've done a great, you should be really pleased with that.. I'm currently restoring my 990 too and if it comes out anywhere as nice as yours I'd be happy. Currently my hydraulics aren't working due to stick valves I guess. I'm going to run some diesel through the circuit and hope that sorts it. Anyway, thanks for sharing and keep up the good work. Looking forward to see more vids on old rusty!
Looks beautiful! Must be so satisfying to have done that. Too nice to use, actually. Me, I'd leave it in the garage and go look at it periodically. Mud? Dents? Nooo sirrr... Not for me... :) But on a more technical side, I do feel compelled to note that there are much better connectors to use for outdoor equipment than those spade affairs. I realize that this may have been OEM practice way back when but weatherproof connectors are very good nowadays and far superior. More expensive, no doubt, though, unfortunately. Also, if you do want or need to use crimped spade type connectors, you may want to look at ratcheting tools with actual forming dies, they give much better crimps and better electrical contact than those simple stamped pliers, and are very affordable. Dielectric grease to protect all those exposed connectors from water is also a great idea. Great video as usual, the technical quality (exposure etc) is superb and far above much of the typical YT fare.
Thanks for the comments, and yes you are right about the connectors...Although in this case the tractor will not see a lot of rain and water .. if any....
I do not know of any old vehicles that have the lights connected to the ignition switch. I guess it is because lights draw a lot of current and the last thing you want is for the ignition switch to burn out as then your engine stops. These days relays are cheap and reliable so modern cars can use them to link lights to the ignition. As Steve says, when rewiring your old vehicle it is down to personal preference.
No they are in the correct position, can't be placed in the other direction at all... The red lens caps on the front should be white , but as I had none so far , I used the red types for now. Rear lights are OK as red or white
HI Steve, excellent work and excellent videos. I just can't understand how you can have red light at the front side of your rear fenders, even in Belgium ....is that a David Brown idiosyncrasy or was there a little oopsie? Other followers also found that strange. For the rest nothing but awe.
Good question! However that is what was on the tractor...in fact red or white for rear lights is ok... These are not rear nor side lights, as they are in the rear fenders front part... so very unclair and it did pass MOT some time ago like this.. Never the less, I can always change the lenses as soon as I find them

Fantastic effort, thanks for the video.

The dash turned out great! On a side note, I think the old steering wheel looks perfectly fine.
It has a few cracks
As good as new again. Weer zo goed als nieuw.👍👍
yep indeed
some DB engineer put some hart and soul in designing the tractor emblem..classy..

As always your work is very very high standard, I wonder whether that tractor looked so good coming out of the factory!
Thanks for the comments, less dents... I guess
What a nice result

Red lights on the fenders facing forward and whites to the rear??? On my tractors it's the other way around.
