@@DeutschlandMapping yeah, Charlemagne's empire, and the early Holy Roman Empire under Otto the great. The Germans were pretty united, until Italy got free, then it was all down hill from there on out.
It's kind of fucked up, actually. When Frederick the Great was young, he didn't want to follow in his father's footsteps and rule Prussia, so he ran of with his (yes, male) lover. They got caught and his father made him WATCH his lover's execution.
@@salehal-jeelani7523 I got it from my (German) history teacher. It wasn't exactly part of the curriculum, he just wanted us to get an impression of the personality of historical figures instead of just learning about their deeds (thus, we got some juicy details about Bismarck and Wilhelm II as well. He was a great teacher). There are some details about the incident on the English Wikipedia article, yet it doesn't confirm that they were lovers: "Soon after his previous affair, he became close friends with Hans Hermann von Katte, a Prussian officer several years older than Frederick who served as one of his tutors.[14] When he was 18, Frederick plotted to flee to England with Katte and other junior army officers. While the royal retinue was near Mannheim in the Electorate of the Palatinate, Robert Keith, Peter Keith's brother, had an attack of conscience when the conspirators were preparing to escape and begged Frederick William for forgiveness on 5 August 1730;[15] Frederick and Katte were subsequently arrested and imprisoned in Küstrin. Because they were army officers who had tried to flee Prussia for Great Britain, Frederick William leveled an accusation of treason against the pair. The king briefly threatened the crown prince with execution, then considered forcing Frederick to renounce the succession in favour of his brother, Augustus William, although either option would have been difficult to justify to the Imperial Diet of the Holy Roman Empire.[16] The king forced Frederick to watch the beheading of his confidant Katte at Küstrin on 6 November, leading the crown prince to faint just before the fatal blow." I can't recommend any English literature, but there are some great documentaries (German productions, maybe you can find them dubbed or with subtitles) freely available on UA-cam.
@@salehal-jeelani7523 You can also read about their relationship in his older sister, Wilhelmine von Bayreuth's memoirs. Fritz also talked about Katte very briefly with a longtime friend of his, Henri du Catt. Catt speaks about how Fritz describes Katte was executed in his own memoirs, during which he works for him. Historians (very amusingly) think Fritz hired Catt because of his name. I think this is somewhat true, because Catt is the only other person we know, today, Fritz spoke about his relationship with Katte BESIDES his sister. Fritz also rather indirectly references to Hans in his will. In it, he wishes to be buried besides (or with the/)a statue of a praying man he kept adjacent from his study at San Soucci Palace, alongside his most beloved dogs. He called it Antonius, despite the Sculptor not having had intended or claimed it being Antonius. Whenever his contemporaries corrected him or referred to it as the/a praying man, Fritz got pretty worked up about it and insisted it be called Antonius. What makes his reference to Antonius even more depressing is that Antonius's lover, Hadrian, built a city near where the place Antonius had sacrificed himself for Hadrian. Katte did not die in Potsdam, but he was born and raised in neighboring Berlin (and I also think that's where they took classes together and became acquainted). Even though Fredersdorf died in Potsdam, he had been alive and well during the many years Fritz had and referred to his prized statue as Antonius. Other things we know about Fritz's relationship with Katte, according to his sister's memoirs, is that whenever he was over, they'd usually spend most of their time together and alone in Fritz's room with the door locked. Fritz, also, personally told his family's servants never to disturb them, unless his father was approaching and seemed like he would intrude. One time, Wilhelm did come randomly come in to check in on Fritz. Luckily, the two heard him approaching beforehand, and Hans managed to turn and hide just in time within Fritz's closet. According to other biographies written on Fritz's awkward years as Crown Prince in Prussia was that, eventually, Wilhelm grew suspicious of Fritz and Han's relationship and begun paying persons around his court to spy on them. Fritz and Hans, at this point, turned to spending time a little bit outside of the royal grounds. An artists from the late 19th century actually drew a couple of sketches of the two strolling and Fritz watching Katte sketch something in front of a lakeside (that I unfortunately, do not not have with me, as I have them saved on another device of mine). And Hans would also sneak in to Fritz's room and spend all night with him sometimes. Another biography/documentary I've seen also said that whenever Fritz had gotten into fights with his father whilst Katte was over, Katte would literally wait HOURS for him to let him into his room so he could comfort him. In a letter to one of his confidants, Friedrich Wilhelm expresses that killing Katte would be, knowingly a "fate worse than death" to Friedrich, and that's why he settled on killing Katte instead of continuing to push for the Hapsburgs to acknowledge Augustus as his heir. Friedrich, even, willingly offered Wilhelm spare all of Katte's sentence and he would willingly remove himself from the line of succession, but the Hapsburgs refuted this as option as well. To be fair, the Hapsburgs did not expect Wilhelm to overturn Katte's sentencing to an execution, and they though life imprisonment was rather harsh as well, but then again, when they did hear about the overturning of Katte's execution they simply discouraged it. Grumbkow insisted Wilhelm not execute Katte as it would make the country seem much more barbaric than people already very much believed they were. Wilhelm ignored his pleas, and semi-successfully, isolated Prussia diplomatically for a good while, from the rest of Europe. The Kattes, and Hans especially, were also pretty popular, as other lower ranking nobility and envoys from other countries outside the HRE (such as Denmark) petitioned on his behalf. Also, all of the ruling senior officers during Katte's trail, ruled in favor for Katte to be imprisoned, not executed. Wilhelm would eventually come to regret executing Katte, as he had lost a good friend in Han's father, Hans Heinrich von Katte, who would shortly come to terms that his son was gay after his death (and we know this, through letters he exchanged between himself and his father who still lived with him at the time). A solider named Karl Ludwig von Pöllnitz, who personally saw the execution, wrote in his own memoirs or a letter to a friend that "[they were like] two youthful birds, singing the same love song, and sharing the same nest". And they treated each other "like master and mistress" [-- husband and wife]. Fritz and Katte, according to his account, blew kisses to one another during their final goodbye to one another. Another solider, whose name I unfortunately can't remember right now, also stated that Hans's humility and sense of peace during his entire time imprisoned, and having had spent months knowing he was executed, and being torn over the fact he was going to die, but had embarrassed his father that he owed so much, was something he would never forget the rest of his life and absolutely admired. Katte also wrote a farewell letter to Fritz, and promised when he died, he told him not to blame himself his death and that would personally kneel to the foot of the Lord of beg on "Fritz's behalf" (. I believe this meaning, he'd try and persuade God to allow Fritz accomplish whatever he is hoping to accomplish). I believe Katte would have written a much lengthier letter to Fritz, but the contents of the letter had to be written with a priest overseeing what he had written. Wilhelmine claims in her memoirs that when Fritz returned from Küstrin, he continued to wear the brown prisoner's coat they had given him, which was almost identical to Katte's, to rags and was essentially, unwearable. Wilhelmine says Katte's death plunged Friedrich in a unique, deep depression he could never seem to completely shake off of him, and that he had told her he had never loved anyone [as much] again. Also, Four weeks after Friedrich had ascended the throne he raised Katte's father to one of his Count's. A brother-in-law of Katte's, who was married to the eldest of his younger sisters, and who also took part in assisting Fritz and Katte flee Prussia was also one of Friedrich's most decorated Field Marshals during the Silesian Wars. Apparently, he and Katte were very close by the way they addressed one another. And, before I forget, Fritz also, randomly confesses to Henri du Catt, about not being able to sleep one night and decidedly, up and went go burning official documents surrounding Katte's death. But Fritz, however, immediately changes the of the subject of the conversation before Henri du Catt manages to ask a question of 'but why?'. And FINALLY, Hans is directly, but maternally, related to Otto von Bismark. Fritz sought and oversaw, personally, the marriage between their two houses. TL;DR: Katte and Fritz were very soft and very gay for each other.
