उन्होंने कोलंबिया यूनिवर्सिटी से 1915 में एमए और 1916 में पीएचडी की डिग्री हासिल की.
वे एक जाने-माने वकील भी थे. उन्होंने अपने मुवक्किलों के लिए वकालत की, साथ ही समानता, स्वतंत्रता, और बंधुत्व जैसे लोकतांत्रिक मूल्यों की भी वकालत की.
वे भारतीय संविधान के निर्माता थे.
उन्होंने दलित वर्गों के हितों की रक्षा के लिए 15 अगस्त, 1936 को 'स्वतंत्र लेबर पार्टी' का गठन किया.
उन्होंने 'बहिस्कृत भारत' समाचारपत्र की शुरुआत की थी.
उन्होंने 'पाकिस्तान पर विचार' शीर्षक से एक ग्रंथ लिखा था.
उन्होंने 'शूद्र कौन थे?' नाम की रचना भी की थी.
वे भारत सरकार के कानून मंत्री (1947-51) भी रहे.
लम्बी बीमारी के कारण 6 दिसंबर, 1956 को दिल्ली में नींद में ही उनका निधन हो गया.
