- Zahra Kassam shares why education from birth to three is so important, and how parents and caregivers can maximize a child's ability to learn in the future. Zahra Kassam is Founder and CEO of venture-backed startup, Monti Kids: the only subscription service for children ages 0-3 that provides an authentic Montessori education. Zahra holds a BA in Psychology from Harvard and a Master’s degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She is an internationally certified Montessori teacher at the infant, toddler and preschool levels and a mother to two young boys. Through Monti Kids, Zahra is filling the education gap from birth to preschool, the most critical years of development when 85% of the brain is formed.
Zahra has been invited to the White House Early Education Summit, named a Global Education Influencer, named a ‘World Changing Woman’ by Conscious Company Media, and was nominated for the Dalai Lama Unsung Heroes of Compassion Awards for her work with children. Zahra appeared on ABC’s Shark Tank in January 2019 and secured a deal with Kevin O’Leary. In the US, we need to support parents and mothers first in the form of family leave before they can even consider focusing on education.
Plus encouraging families to live a life style that allows one parent to be a stay at home parent instead of relying on others to raise their children.
So true
True
Amen!!!!!!!!
yup! all I get is 6 weeks at my current job- Large corporation. Sad! My friend in Europe gets 11 months.
I am a teacher and I wish all parents listen to these tips and stop focusing on the results putting too much pressure on their kids to get the highest scores while neglecting the first years.
Mother of five here: wooden toys and low hooks: great ideas. Also plastic plates and cups in low drawers or shelves so they can get out their own dishes. Mine can set the table by the time they're 3 or 4, and make their own cereal and PBJs by that age as well. Water cooler: not a good idea to have inside unless you want to be mopping up water all day. That 1 year old turning off the water when the glass is full is the exception, not the rule. Kids love playing with water.
Good ideas and point about the water
Yeah, but I think that what she meant by learning self control, as in they will be playing with the water couple of times before they know what it’s for and it’s what you drink when you are thirsty and it is not like other toys.
So I think kids who play with water are kids who got acquainted with it by themselves a little late than the kid’s age on the video.
You could just pick it up and put it on the counter when you leave the room i suppose
after some time they stop playing with the water cooler. at least most of them, initially it is hard.
I'm seeing in the video that there was only enough water in the water cooler for that one glass. I'm thinking through the water cooler idea because I really like it, but I agree that my son would be more enthralled with the ability to initiate the stream of water rather than pouring himself a glass (for a while at least). I'm thinking the parent has to monitor the baby's use and exploration and add water to the cooler when they're seeking it out? Or do you create a set up where the runoff water falls down into a bucket under the cooler? I want this to work!
She was right about mental growth of a child till 3 years
But her focus was just toys which is a small part in the learning of children
Please elaborate
Please elaborate your opinion! I think that’s what she can for 10 minutes.
I am not expert but after i have my first born i think the intelligence of babies esp under 2 are underestimated.
It is!
It’s pretty amazing what a child
Learning to accept yourself so that you could model the same for you child is the best take away for me!!
I had no idea that numbers and letters on baby toys were more of a marketing invention than educationally based. I learned a lot from this. Great talk!
Ya you learnt one thing , great job😂
Approach your kids with curiosity rather than expectation. Thank you! Will keep in mind
Executive functioning promotes concentration, perseverance and problem solving. Prepare the environment for your child to support this and Be the Best role model to show confidence by acknowledging your mistakes and Excitement in learning.
This is stellar. It should be displayed in hospital before mama leaves!
I am from India and we are already doing this from ages;like my father is for my daughter. Grandparents knows the best 🎉
Taking notes, as I’m 27 weeks pregnant with my first!! Thank you!! ✍🏽
The most important thing you can give a child is encouragement and confidence. My son is 1 and has both wooden and battery operated toys. I have come to realize he try new things and learns so quickly is because he encouraged too. When he learns something new he is praised. Scientists are now learning is what infant, toddler, children and Young adults are taught that impacts them the most.
I have a nine months old. really glad I found this video. Learned a lot. I want to give my baby the best like she told.
Such great information. I wish I had access to this education as a teen mom. I had my first right after high school. 6 years later I’m having my second child and I feel so much more prepared and capable to provide my children what they deserve.
But you can start with first kid,.. it deserve that
@@baby.hood20 of course!
A very passionate speech 😉 learned a lot as a father of 7 months old boy
How informative! I wish I knew all this before my baby was born! I would have saved so much money by not buying electronic toys! I still have time to enhance her learning environment by minimising the amount of toys she has around her and keeping her focused... thank you!
❤️❤️
I'm 7 weeks today and I'm so thankful this popped up! I needed this.
So thankful I live in a state with the means to provide an Early Intervention program for children 1-3 years old. My son is definitely benefiting.
What state
Totally agree with this! I have been helping the infant care in our preschool and I would see our babies choosing empty tissue boxes and recycled bottle shakers over battery-operated toys! Seeing them interact with these materials also allowed me to see how children can show their creativity at a very young age.
yes true!
So true! They are just not interested in toys.
Soo truee, my baby also did it. I bought him a lot of toys, but surprisingly, he didn't interested with those. He like to take my kitchen stools, motor and etc. 😊😅
6 months pregnant and listening to this.
me too!! 🎉❤
Zahra, very profound talk. I wish I knew this 30 years ago.
My baby is almost 2 years old and it wasn't until now that UA-cam recommended this. I hope I can still help her!
It’s never too late
Great parenting insights, thanks Zahra for your important work!
Amazing teachings
While this is good you might also want to consider secure attachments. Having insecure attachments to mum especially deeply impacts all of life
I totally agree with your opinion especially about toys which can move or light, they just give enjoyment not educational
She is “selling” some basic knowledge of parenting as a gold. That means a lot to understand the level of education in modern society. Just the first 30 sec were interesting with that diagram…
Very informative. I’m having my first child in 2 months and glad I’ve watched this TED talk
This is something which nobody talks about these days and it is very important for our next generation
I never knew that about the numbers and letters on toys! Mind blowing. Really like the thought about not considering the prepared an environment as a “masterpiece”, but a a work in progress and to approach our child with curiosity not expectation.
This is exactly what the world needs ❤
As a first time mother, with a 3 1/2 month old, this is gold! Thank you for sharing this ❤️
Allah reward you sister
This is great!
*hint* if water cooler isn't your way to go, keep a small pitcher with an open lid available at reaching height for the child. When buying toys/supplies for your child, look for things marked "montesorri"
CHILDREN DO AS YOU DO, NOT AS YOU SAY. if you're going to tell them, do it yourself too!
She is basically explaining the Montessori approach - an educational method founded by Maria Montessori.
Bah.... Call it whatever fancy name you want. My granfparents n parents grew up with traditional practices which imbibed all these
Its the new homogenized globalized capitalist world which has eroded all of that and then rebranded a small bit of it and sells it for high price
@@apoorvalakshmiragi75 but it's not "just" a fancy name, it's a fact. And it's not a brand, it's a method/approach 😊 But I agree that companies now are trying to monetize it. This is the new hype.

Great talk. Thank you, bless you. All your dreams come true .
Just coming back to this again after having my baby. A huge thank you for this talk! ❤
She is amazing! Her speech and the way of presenting provided more useful and concrete information than million other longer talks! Well done, Zahra! 👏👏👏
Great and informative. Thank you, Zahra, 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Very informative & helpful talk, thank you!
Loved this talk. Great info to implementing for my 2 week old infant.. like the brilliant shelf ideas!
Thank you so much Zahra, I enjoyed this so much ! This is so insightful and filled with precious and much needed key information for parents and caregivers. Cheers to all the parents and caregivers out there !! Let's continue to improve what we're doing in order to efficiently help our babies and children develop.
Great talk! Thank you
I finally got around to watch this and I'm mad I waited so long. Thanks for this! I have passed it on to the families in my classroom.
I had no idea that letters and numbers aren’t as important as the baby’s environment. My baby is 8 months and now I feel that I’ve been doing everything wrong, I will be working on his environment and help him be more independent. I am starting my career in ECE and hopefully I can learn more!!!
I saw this video because of @montikids on instagram, hopefully I can win the giveaway to improve my baby’s environment ❤️
@@lizsoto7182 hello my friend, you did it right! Everytime you realize you did something wrong and change it, thats when you become more successful. So you did the right thing. Learn daily!
How do u feel that you are doing everything wrong? My baby is 8 month old now and m trying to learn to give her best environment but financially m not stable to buy this expensive classes or toy.. I don't know what should I do?? Please share your experience
@@aafrinnaz5667 Dear Aafrin I don't think that creating environment for kid needs extra money for purchasing toys or things. but it can be created by the very real things which is available in our home for daily use. Those things also can be placed in babies favour and can be used as learning material for your baby. 🙏
Remember, do not be hard on yourself.
Father of a 2 months old baby boy, i definitely will consider all the advice and ideas you mentioned. Thank you mam 😊
So cool to see a dad invested in their child enough to even look up videos like this, I can tell you're going to be an exceptional father
So nice to see other Montessorians out there ❤
This talk is great! She has a point on a lot of the topics and I’ll be sure to utilize them
This is awesome, even before birth I think they start to learn and develop so much from what they can feel and hear!
This dawned on me that babies can feel rejection from as early as their womb days, if only alot of mamas knew Indeed we would start from prebirth on what we expose our kids to, alot of damaged people out here who can't trace where their problems are rooted
@@peacefulrhythms9027 if you haven't heard of him, Gabor Maté talks about this. It's fascinating ☺
Thank you for this talk. Really eye opening. God bless you ❤
Love the speaker .
I faced my fear of becoming a full-time visual artist. For years I daydreamt of a wonderful image of being a house wife, raising her kids whilst pursuing her art career. This year I decided no more. Now actively took the steps to actually Be the full time artist
Wonderful advice. Thank you
THIS IS GOLD!!!
Thank you for your advice I will implement these advice on my 9 months old niece I’ll definitely influence her with this!!
I'm a father of a 3 months old baby boy. Thank you for sharing this. ❤️

Great speech, I learned a lot! Why isn’t this mandatory for parents to be?
Great info👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks for the great insights! Considering your pieces of advice for my 4-month old child.
Love this!!! Super helpful and very well put together!
I'm so happy🤍 i always bought my baby more of wooden play thn any electronics and it's really true how smart my 2 year old girl has grown into🤍
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and research. Eye opening insights, data and solution that we can implement without waiting for the system to adjust and shift their budget spending.
Excellent talk!! Loved every minute!

2:00 as you start your story it felt like your talking about mine
You're accent is so good, I liked it 🤗
I feel there is entire life to learn about things n life but childhood comes only 1s
Let our children enjoy it at fullest
Wow, that was some important and great information 🙂👍
Keep it up 👍🏿
Very helpful, thanks Zahra!
To be fair, I agree with everything she’s saying. HOWEVER, not all parents can afford even what’s she’s saying.
I was a teen mom. I didn’t have a home to do all of this in. I struggling in my mommas house with my baby. So it’s a beautiful concept but unrealistic to some low income families or diff situations. And I checked out the company she owns. The prices aren’t low income friendly either.
Wow❤
Nice video 📹 👍
