Lava rock is correct. Mexican style molcajete uses lava rocks and I believe that’s what Joshua is using. I don’t think the Mexican molcajete is the correct approach here though, as the crevices mean you will lose some of the ground spices. Much better to have a sturdier, smooth surface rock mortar so that pounding doesn’t damage the rock & all of the ground spices are captured. Also, Thai basil is edible and has a different taste than ordinary basil. At least, I’ve eaten it without ill effects.
