I was 8 years old and living at 38 Great Brooke Valley ave. when it hit. It somehow jumped over our building, but sucked out all the glass in our windows. our Niebers weren't so luckey. My skin was itchy for weeks from the insulation impregnating my body from the intense pressure of the storm and the sound and smell stuck with me for a long time. Not good memories but glad my family all survived.
My birthday. My uncle was with us for my party and after the baseball sized hail stopped falling, we went over to his house on Burncoat street. The house across from his was completely flattened with a bathtub and shower pipe standing on top of the rubble. I’ll never forget that image.
Hi, I've never used this before so I am not certain if this msg. goes to the owner of the film like FB or just a general forum. I'm writing to the person who posted this. I lived in Worcester when this tornado hit. I was 7 and it was terrifying. Our apartment on Channing St. wasn't hit but the wind, hail, and horrific storm has never left my nightmares. My mother was a nurse. She got dressed and went to Memorial Hospital and volunteered. I'm 68 now and living in CA, but when the air has a certain quality accompanied by hail I still get very frightened. They tell you CA doesn't have tornadoes but we've had several touch down here in Moreno Valley and Long Beach. Nothing like what happened in Worcester and Shrewsbury where I grew up but you don't know that until it's over. Thanks for sharing this.
June 9, 1953 was also a hot and sweltering day in Worcester, Massachusetts. Here's how deadly tornadoes from during the summer. Hot air and rising columns of moisture create updrafts. The hot air and moisture produced the F4 tornado that hit Worcester, Massachusetts.
A high-pressure system collided with a low-pressure mass over the Midwest, thus generating tornadoes in Ohio, Michigan and Nebraska. Overnight on 8 June 1953, a mass of cold air made its way to New England. The cold front collided with warm air from the South, thus creating the conditions that would allow a tornado to hit Massachusetts.
My Dad was at a lake in Shrewsbury that day. He was 16. His Mom, sister, and brother survived in their basement. The house was destroyed and they moved to Wesley. I never knew this was the huge event that it was.
moved to holden as a youngster in 1969 to brattle/doyle road area and in looking at map of the path this thing took in '53 it literally went right over my neighborhood...i recall plenty of mid summer nights when everything would get a strange greenish-yellow color before these huge storms would hit...but this must have been truly terrifying.
It so happens that today, June 01 2011 , a tornado that ripped through Springfield MA is headed towards Worcester almost on the 58th anniversary of the '53 tornado.
I have that book as well. Definitely a great read and is a great minute by minute account of the course of the storm from Petersham to Southborough. Amazing to see an F4 tornado up here, but it shows it can happen anywhere, and it does. Tomorrow is the 56 year anniversary. Have you seen the memorial at Quinsig?
Very rare and interesting footage from this historical tornado event. Attn. Crownbaker, you should click on audio swap and put some nice backround music to this video.
I didn't know that. I haven't seen it close up either, but will do that soon. Oh, they showed this vid on channel 4 yesterday and have it linked on the wbztv website.
Wow, thanks for posting that! If you haven't read it already, I highly recommend the book "Tornado! 84 minutes, 94 lives" by John M. O'toole which is about that disaster.
Yep, my has that book, he was 6 months old at the time, but they lived up on Airport Hill (Orchard Hill) & the tornado didn't hit there. I think we went to some event at Tatnuck Bookseller where the author was giving a talk.

+Lake Baikal ...Yes, it was. My dad owned a gas station at the time. He took one look at the sky and closed shop.

I live off of Ararat st today where the tornado went through. Most of the homes here today were the ones rebuilt after the tornado.
