I can relate, I have been waiting for the impossible to happen for what feels like a millennia and an eternity, but has only been 2 to 3 excruciatingly long and painful 3 years for my dead lover to be brought back so I could tell her as best I can how much she meant to me. oh well, though the words cut half as deep as those mental scars, I will forever wait. use like the many of few.

Oddly enough, being a kid from the 80s, my mom was one of those "Borderline" girls (If you've seen the video by Madonna, you'll know what I mean) so one of the first things I remember in life is that when I grew up, I wanted to be Michael Hutchence. Jumping on the bed trying to dance like him when I was four and New Sensation was on MTV.

I think its one of those, its what you get out of it things, but for me its saying that misery is always waiting to embrace you. You can be happy for a time but it will simply wait until that happiness fades. No matter what.
Yeah...the song is stating that joy, happiness and even contentment are only temporary feelings and that ultimately Misery is there waiting for us all in the end. This is sadly true for the chronically, clinically depressed.
I had a teacher years ago who said that she dated the guy who sang this song (I don't know if I should take her word but I guess for now I have to) she said she used to tell him that she'll wait for him when he was on tour. But I guess she couldn't handle it and broke up with him by taking her stuff without saying goodbye.

She probably left because they may have tried to work it out the tour before and then it was just too much again.
