So quick fun fact, this show was based on a book. The author wanted to write a story about two boys who were next door neighbors in a world where homophobia wasn't really a big deal, but their families hate each other. However the author also wrote another book that is meant to be the opposite to this one, about two boys who are next door neighbors and whose families love each other, but where homophobia is a rampant. That book was adapted into the show 'My Only 12%', which is also incredible, and holds the record for the show that made me cry the most number of times.

Regarding them not specifying sexualities, there are certain important points to be considered- firstly in some east asian cultures and especially in thai culture homosexuality was never considered a crime or something unnatural per say. Mainly because thai buddhism always included homosexuality in the larger discourse and didn't explicitly reject the idea that people could love people of their own gender. So in alot of these shows you will see monks or religious leaders being fine with gay couples. This (comparative) inclusivity can be seen in regards to their perceptions of gender and sexuality as well. And hence thailand is COMPARATIVELY more inclusive of transgender people, ladyboys or any other kinds of gender expressions. Secondly, thai culture also sees gender and sexuality as a spectrum. So they don't really give importance to labels that are very much important to the west. Its more like they always consider liking persons of their own gender a possibility - so they don't really limit themselves by labeling their sexualities. Does that make sense? I was also surprised initially but as you delve deeper into the bl world things will start making more sense ig. But bad buddy is revolutionary in terms of actually discussing queerness explicitly as it is without trying to fit their characters into heteronormative standards like " i don't like guys i just like you" so yeah I hope that helps:)

Okay, so, let's clear up the doubts about their ages! Currently, so when they're in university, they're 18, as their year has basically just started. As the series will progress you will see them graduating to the next year so at that point they're sure to be 19 (or almost). There's a three years gap between the moment the last see each other and the one where they meet again in university. I remember you saying in your first reaction that it looks like they (their friend groups etc) still act like highschool kids and that's, well, because they're still teens after all 😂 Btw: Pa is one year younger than him, which why he was in the same school he used to attend when he came to see her at lunch. She's still attending her last year of Mattayom, while he's a freshman at uni.
@FabiReacts No problem. Bad Buddy is my current obsession since 2022 and I love people reacting to it as they see it for the first time. Your reactions are so cute and funny, eagerly waiting for the next ones 🥺
To answer your question, yes, many BLs followed the "I was oblivious to my sexuality until I met this guy" trope. You see this very heavily in Korean BLs, the majority of Japanese BLs, and a good chunk of Thai BLs. This is because when BL started it was mainly written by women for other women. However in more recent years as BL has gained traction with queer men and queer people, there has been a big transition into many of these stories being written by queer people for queer people, and vicariously, much less of those tropes. I will say that even now, characters in BLs don't name drop specific labels, but that also seems to be a Thai culture thing, and many openly queer actors haven't (publicly) specifically labelled themselves either. Now if you want a more in-depth explanation, specifically into Thai bl, here it is haha: The first Thai BL to air on tv, 'Love Sick', was actually only released 10yrs ago, and the genre has moved forward leaps and bounds since. Because when I started watching BL 7yrs ago, one of the casting calls for a BL airing at the time '2Moons' actually specified that no openly queer men could take the main roles (which didn't work since one of the main actors has since come out as Non-binary and Pansexual). Almost all the shows were full of toxic and harmful tropes, and nobody ever specifically mentioned a label for their sexuality. Around 2019 a big shift started happening in Thai BL, not only in queer fans who felt misrepresented, but also in the many openly gay directors who felt like the things they were directing were not accurately representing the lgbtq community. I think two shows that mark this transition period the best are Lovely Writer (about a man who writes bls, and his struggles within that industry) and I Told Sunset About You (a coming of age story loosely based of the lives of the actors who play the main characters). Another transition period happened in 2021 when the Marriage Equality bill was trying to be passed in Thailand. Many directors and writers started using their shows to show queer issues, and campaign for equal rights, this is also the start of when some characters would actually specify labels for their sexuality. Probably the best example of that era is "Not Me" (about college students who start a vigilante group to help enact social change). Ultimately the marriage equality bill failed, but the messages campaigning for social reform continued. I think the next big shift started early 2023. The Marriage Equality bill was resubmitted, and finally passed in Thailand a couple months ago. This is the era where more and more characters are starting to have specific labels for their sexualitys, and their is a more diverse catalog of BLs being released than ever before, and more public figures are coming out than ever before. Probably the biggest being two very famous actors who had been playing in bls since 2017 and 2018 respectively, publicly revealing their relationship and getting engaged.
Wow I LOVE a good history lesson, and let me tell you this was EXCELLENT! Thanks for getting me up to speed with this. I'm so proud of the Thai people for this progress 🥹 can't wait to see it reflected in the shows, and I'm SO glad they're being more considerate when representing LGBT characters 🏳🌈
@@FabiReacts You are very welcome! I am so glad you liked it! I know that sometimes new fans are confused because Thai BL not only has fans and creators factoring into the evolution of it, but also a lots of culture and politics. It is also fun for me to talk about a niche topic I don't often get the privilege of talking about.
1) Why they fight? It is for the drama 🙂 2) Yes it is his voice. Nanon (Pran) is a well-known singer in Thailand too. 3) Pran was sent away to boarding school from his parents. Pran's mom wanted to seprate them. He was away for like 3 years. They met again in first year in university. The first 3 Episodes are like a prologue to their story, you get the important information from their past. From Episode 4 on it is getting real. I don't want to spoil you but it is getting better and better. It was fun watch it again. Bad Buddy is my favourite BL since I watched it.
Yes, the male particle was actually referring to how they write/speak! And just want to add on, the "P" on Pran's bag is also their merch, there will be more merch with P on later episode.
19:34 In Thai you use different particles based on your gender, for example, if you are male you would say hello ("sah wat dee") followed by the male particle "khrap", but if you're female you'd say "sah wat dee khaa". Since Pat uses male particles in his notes, Pran and friends assume him to be male. Incidentally, the word you'll hear for boyfriend ("faen") is gender neutral and can also mean girlfriend. (Telling your parents you have a "faen" won't automatically tell them if they're a guy or girl.)
Oh, you might be wondering why different faculties often have intense rivalries with each other. It's quite common in many parts of Asia, and Thailand is no exception. Faculties there can have strong rivalries, even though they’re part of the same school or university. They’re competitive about everything-sports, singing events, and more. Althought, it’s not to the point of actual fighting. In this case, the rivalry feels more intense because Pat and Pran’s friends initially crossed paths in the wrong way, making the situation even more ridiculous. It’s all pretty petty and mostly about pride-nobody wants to back down. Haha. And yes, its Pran's (Nanon, real name) voice here @38:17
You’ll see the rivalry between their faculties become more apparent later on with Pran’s seniors. It runs deep, even stemming from older generations. As Pat and Pran’s dad once said, they couldn’t stand each other. Pat’s dad is such a flirty-badboy, while Pran’s dad, like Pran, is more conservative and a bit of a goody-goody.
@@FabiReacts No problem! I actually find it fun to explain the details and break down the plot bit by bit for you. Honestly, you're doing me a favor-it feels like I'm talking, ranting, fangirling, or fanboying with you since I don't really have anyone else to share this with. Haha Yes! Pran's voice (Nanon) is so pretty! There’s going to be more of him singing in another episode (besides this song here), and the lyrics... oh, just you wait! Hehe. I don’t want to spoil too much now-I want you to feel the excitement as you watch the show. Hehe!
Just a heads up. This series is revolutionary, not the typical bl series out there (especially the older ones), they tackled a lot of social issues. example: 7:01 "It's the new era already. No more s,ex object jokes" and a lot more of calling out other bls or just society as a whole, like the previous example, or gender stereotypes, and a lot more. As for 1:51 . They would be specific on their gender identity later on to the show.
This is my favourite show of all time. When you finish this, I would highly recommend BLs such as: "My School President" - a cute & beautiful bl with good acting and music!! "Moonlight Chicken" - don't get freaked out by the name 😅 it's a masterpiece! Realistic approach to many social issues! Highschool Frenemy - well, it's technically tagged as a "bromance" but the main leads are practically in love with each other. Spectacular acting and deals with important issues. A lot like Bad Buddy but it's not exactly tagged as a "BL drama" although the main leads are ready to D!e for each other.
Definitely not knowing their sexuality/not acknowledging it is a common trope (especially since most Asian countries are conservative) but there are many bl dramas where they are comfortable/proud of their sexuality, mostly in university/non high school dramas. Also yes, kap = male, ka = female
I watched this in 2024 as well and it's so good to see someone react to it in real time 🤭🤭🤭 can't wait for your next ep reaction!!! YOU are gonna love it
The opening disclaimer is in most thai shows, regardless of what type of show it is. It's more of an age rating/just prior warning for things that might happen in the show. The card at the beginning shows that this series is rated 13+
I’m not trying to spoil anything for those who haven’t watched the series yet, but here are a few hints that I think might help you enjoy this episode even more: The Fact: In the original novel, after Pran rescues Pa from drowning, Pat’s attitude toward Pran starts to shift. He stops seeing him as an enemy and starts seeing him as a friend-but he can’t let anyone know about it. To repay Pran, Pat starts secretly supporting him in whatever he’s doing, but he has to keep up the act of being rivals. Another moment where Pat feels like he owes Pran goes back to 10th grade. Pat joined the school band as a drummer to help Pran out, but this ended up causing a lot of drama. Pran’s mom ended up transferring him to a boarding school to keep him away from Pat-at school and at home. The Hint: The Thai song Pran sings at the Christmas event is super important. The lyrics are about wondering if the nice things a friend does are just friendly or if they mean something more, and it creates this feeling of insecurity. In the series, every time this song is used as background music, it reflects Pran’s insecurities or feelings toward Pat. But here’s the thing-it’s never played from Pat’s side until Episode 5. My Opinion: There’s a scene where Pran hesitates before going into Pat’s room, and to me, it feels like Pran has feelings for Pat. That’s probably why he tries to avoid being too close to him or even being in the same room. As for Pat, I think he follows Pran around because he feels guilty for being the reason Pran was transferred to another school for three years. Now that they’re back in each other’s lives, he wants to make it up to Pran. Since everyone sees them as rivals, the only way they can interact is by competing or arguing-just to cover up their real friendship.
you're not ready for episode 3 lol. just a note, i don't know if you noticed the teacher call Pran "Parakul", that's 'cause Thai people usually have a name and then a nickname. I don't remember if we learn Pat's name but I do know Pran gets called Parakul at least once more in the series
After this series you need to watch Tale of a Thousand Stars then you can watch Bad Buddy Our Skyy 2 Special Episodes as they finish off the Pat/Pran story
I was wondering if you updated omg it’s been a week that’s on me I should have subscribed & turned on post notifications 😅 what matters is that I’m here now lol❤️
I would like to recommend some quality BL series [other than] : 1 *I Feel You Linger in the Air[You might be confused about this. The content is about flashbacks. Watch it continuously from around ep3. Everything starts to become easy to understand.] 2*I told sunset about you [kind of coming of age series) 3 *kinporch the series 4*DFF /death friends forever ( exciting series) 5 *we are the series 6*4 minutes …(confessing series 😅)❤ 7*last twilight…
I think everyone watching this the 1st time will feel that Pran's mother is very dramatic, up until it was revealed why she reacted that way. Most people will immediately understand that she indeed had a very strong reason and has a right to feels such resentment against her neighbour. Can't wait for you to find out the reason too😊
I would say that once we understood why she reacted the way she did to certain things, it still didn’t give her the right to control Pran to not associate himself with Pat because it wasn’t their faults, leave your children out of it
@@abbyortiz132 I said she has a right to feel such resentment against the neighbours, not that she has a right to control Pran. I also said we will understand why she did it and she has a strong reason to do it. I'll probably elaborate more in the comment section after the reaction to that ep, see you then.
@ yes she has the right to have resentment to the parents, but not at the kids tho (Pa and Pat). The controlling Pran of associating with Pat is part of the resentment she has towards the parents. They are still connected in a way. We can still understand the reason why she is the way she is and feel bad, but know what she was putting Pran though wasn’t okay and Pran shouldn’t have paid the price for that. I get your pov, but both statements I made can coexist.
@@abbyortiz132 She did nothing wrong except what she did to Pran and even that, she did it to protect Pran. What Pat's father did, bruh.... I still don't get how Pat can eat dinner with him on the same table but that's us Asian. However, let's not spoils this further and ruined the reaction.
idk why ppl always jumps to conclusion. if you see people taking generational fights seriously, what makes you think that they're just being dramatic? just because we don't see the reason, doesn't mean the fight isn't deep.
I just don’t agree with the idea of generational fights - they make no sense to me even on this context (having seen a few eps already) 😅 you can’t just blame a whole family for your issues with an individual, and/or expect your family to do the same thing. I’m also talking from experience here 😅🥲
the Big Question in your opening monolog... Are BL and Gay genres equivalent? Yes. But also, no. Depends on which segment of the audience you ask. Some answers emphasize the (popular) history of the BL genre to help draw dividing lines. Others favor the (cultural) history of specific regions. And still others reflect how well-versed the respondent is on (academic) gender theory and (academic) sexuality theory. The answer may also hinge on whether you pose the question on a Thursday or a Saturday. Waxing or waning moon may tilt the answer also. In short, that question is hotly debated, draws partisan answers, and, ultimately, where to draw the dividing line between BL and Gay (whether to draw it at all?) is a subjective decision. On the one hand, I would suggest you'll derive maximum enjoyment from BL when you disregard the technicalities in that question and just flow in whatever direction a given series takes you. If the story and characters work for you, then you have a Good Series. And whether it is a closer fit to Gay or BL is beside the point. Besides, even if they are discrete categories, they can still overlap. Bad Buddy (clearly, a Good Series) is both quintessential BL; yet, also manifests a few trappings usually associated with Gay storytelling. On the other hand (and as the last sentence intimates), I find it useful in doing criticism and analysis to regard each genre as possessing unique qualities that make them separate categories. However, even if the genres diverge, any given series (or episode) (or scene) might mix and match traits from the other. If it were a Venn diagram, the BL circle would substantially overlap the Gay circle and both would be contained in the bigger Queer circle. For the sake of brevity (go ahead and roll your eyes; am aware this is Paragraph 4), here is my oversimplified breakdown. A protoypical BL series focuses on a same-sex romance as the crux of the story. The characters will like each other. They may or may not "identify as gay." It is rare for a BL series to investigate the consequences of that attraction beyond basic homophobia. By contrast, a Gay story might be a romance or it might not. But it absolutely will be concerned with portraying gay life, gay culture, gay identity as something that also exists beyond the individual. Accurately portraying the harshness and the Beaty of gay life is a major genre concern. BL, by contrast, just requires we believe these two boys like each other. (Pat and Pran do! Or will.) Again, that's oversimplified. But as a starting point for discussion, it will suffice.
First of all, I LOVE the way you write! ✍🏾 And to be honest I was just curious about it but you’ve explained it beautifully! I’ll just let the story flow and take me where it wants to take me as you’ve suggested! Although I’m always asking questions 😂 just bare with me haha
P.S. The unreliability of these labels to categorize series into genres is most apparent if we glance at how leading streaming companies organize their libraries. Netflix has no category for BL. Its BL content is searchable under LGBT or gay. Viki, meanwhile, has no LGBT category. Its gay content all show up via searching BL or GL. GaGaOoLaLa, meanwhile, features both categories. And most of its content will show up under either tag. Most, but last time I looked, there were exceptions. Clear as mud, eh?
"khap/krap/kap" vs "kha/ka" at the end of sentences. if a person is talking or writing with "khap/krap/kap", they are male. if a person uses "kha/ka", they are female 20:00 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ about the rivalry in thai bl, engineering vs architecture rivalry theme are very common, very common in fact that I got so tired watching those kinds of theme but sometimes I can't avoid it completely when the story is very good.

I’ve watched BL’s for years but this was an excellent recap!
@@tegayle7961 Why thank you!
Raikantopini or the disclaimer is used in nearly all thai bl series and that's why it is now like an anthem for bl fan.
its actually also for their Lakorn
1) Why they fight? It is for the drama 🙂
2) Yes it is his voice.
Omg I miss this duo so much! This show is so meaningful to me, I actually teared up (again) when I heard their ost 37:58.
Hearing the main ost after so long made me emotional a bit 🥹
@@peepee5527 Thanks for the explanation! Makes a lot more sense now. And also, Pran's voice is so prettyyyy!!
@@FabiReacts No problem! I actually find it fun to explain the details and break down the plot bit by bit for you. Honestly, you're doing me a favor-it feels like I'm talking, ranting, fangirling, or fanboying with you since I don't really have anyone else to share this with. Haha
Yes! Pran's voice (Nanon) is so pretty! There’s going to be more of him singing in another episode (besides this song here), and the lyrics... oh, just you wait! Hehe. I don’t want to spoil too much now-I want you to feel the excitement as you watch the show. Hehe!
@@peepee5527probably more common in boys majority faculties 😅
Yess Pran voice (Nanon) sounds amazing 🤩
Just a heads up. This series is revolutionary, not the typical bl series out there (especially the older ones), they tackled a lot of social issues. example: 7:01 "It's the new era already. No more s,ex object jokes" and a lot more of calling out other bls or just society as a whole, like the previous example, or gender stereotypes, and a lot more.
As for 1:51 . They would be specific on their gender identity later on to the show.
they expand on their *sexual identity (not gender, they both identify as men)
Love this!!
This is my favourite show of all time. When you finish this, I would highly recommend BLs such as:
"My School President" - a cute & beautiful bl with good acting and music!!
OMG thanks a lot! Although I had a feeling it was that, it kept bugging me not knowing what it meant 😆 specially the 13+. My mind is so particular lol
just found your chanel, loving your reactions
Thanks
I’m not trying to spoil anything for those who haven’t watched the series yet, but here are a few hints that I think might help you enjoy this episode even more:
The Fact: In the original novel, after Pran rescues Pa from drowning, Pat’s attitude toward Pran starts to shift.
I really have to rewatch the whole show once I finish it to pick up on all of these little details!! 🥹 thank you
In thai females add 'kha' at the and of the sentence and males add 'khrap' at the end.
After you finished this drama you should watch" we are" the series its really good❤❤❤👍

you're not ready for episode 3 lol. just a note, i don't know if you noticed the teacher call Pran "Parakul", that's 'cause Thai people usually have a name and then a nickname. I don't remember if we learn Pat's name but I do know Pran gets called Parakul at least once more in the series

I would like to recommend some quality BL series [other than] : 1 *I Feel You Linger in the Air[You might be confused about this. The content is about flashbacks. Watch it continuously from around ep3. Everything starts to become easy to understand.] 2*I told sunset about you [kind of coming of age series) 3 *kinporch the series 4*DFF /death friends forever ( exciting series) 5 *we are the series 6*4 minutes …(confessing series 😅)❤ 7*last twilight…
to answer your question at the beginning of the video, yea! most bls follow the i'm only gay for you trope. there's a fewer of them that don't do this
I’m slowly realising this! But it’s okay, I kinda like that trope haha but I’m glad there’s variety every once in a while 😁 🏳️🌈

I think everyone watching this the 1st time will feel that Pran's mother is very dramatic, up until it was revealed why she reacted that way. Most people will immediately understand that she indeed had a very strong reason and has a right to feels such resentment against her neighbour. Can't wait for you to find out the reason too😊
Can’t wait too because she makes me angry every time she says stuff haha
I’m also talking from experience here 😅🥲
I'm rewatching this masterpiece with you ❤💚

the Big Question in your opening monolog...
Or will.)
Again, that's oversimplified.
@@FabiReactsyoure so quick. I am actually still drafting! [Finished now.]
Clear as mud, eh?

about the rivalry
in thai bl, engineering vs architecture rivalry theme are very common, very common in fact that I got so tired watching those kinds of theme but sometimes I can't avoid it completely when the story is very good.

I didn't watch the video because of spoilers.
