This was the very first version of Greensleeves I’ve ever known, thanks to my father, when I was a little child...I’m still totally in love with it, definitely the best version
I love England. I love with all my heart. I never want to leave this beautiful land. I might love it more than my own country. Every year is beautiful, the change of seasons makes me wonder which one I love the most! And this composer makes everything even more beautiful!!!
I first heard this in a live performance at NYC's Carnegie Hall as a seven year old child, and was so moved that I cried, and could think of nothing else en route home. Sixty six years later, it remains my favorite over any guitar, lute, or vocal version.
I've been looking for this melody for 20 years. When I was 5-6 years old, I had a small organ. This song was playing on the automatic music, I memorized it myself and played it on the organ. Little me was going on a trip by playing this and looking into the distance.
This is indeed the best version of the song. I played this arrangement a Christmas concert (Violin 2) and I nearly cried the first time I heard the recording. And still do sometimes to this day. Truth is it’s the only arrangement that I won’t get tired or annoyed of.
I remember singing this at Sound Primary School Cheshire, in the 1950's. More accurately my class sang it and I mimed it. To my everlasting regret I sing as flat as my dining room table. My father had a beautiful tenor voice. Unfortunately, I inherited my voice from my mother. I'm 72 now, a lover of most musical genres but most particularly Classical. Still can't sing and it was and is a blight on an otherwise wonderful life.
Don't give up. You can Do It. Singing comes from the soul. I've got a friend that can make a stone sing, and enjoy it! Just Let the vibration pierce you and your voice go out without trying anything. No effort. Let me know if you try! Give yourself a chance.
I first heard this in HKDSE in Hong Kong as a secondary 3 student, and was so moved that I cried, and could think of nothing else than Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination. 3 years later, it remains my favourite over any vocal version.
This piece of music summed up my whole Dr.Barnados inner emotional childhood growing up in a Grade II listed Mansion in Pype Hayes Park, Birmingham.....it was built in the 1600s by a former Captain of The Kings Calvary....and I remember it having a profound effect upon my whenever I heard it.....somehow it just fitted and added to beautiful melancholy wonderous magical fantasy environment I grew up in......it was only when I was forcibly adopted that I began to realise the World was not just the magical beautiful kind place of my early childhood. It always brings tears to my eyes, but fills me with such a beautiful feeling of wonder, and loss, whenever I hear it.
Although our nation is going down the toilet at the moment, this song still fills me with deep pride in this ancient land and I am truly blessed I get to live here🏴 #GodBlessEngland
Thank you, Mr. Britain, for posting this lovely recording. ❤ In all my years, I had only heard - and loved - the score with the Christmas carol. Just last evening, this exact recording was played on a classical music podcast. I wondered why they were playing this carol - albeit so beautiful - at this time, and came here on UA-cam to add to my favorites. The comments let on there was more than I realized, leading me to jump over to Wikipedia for the full story. Although ashamed I had never known the details, I’m so happy to have finally learned! This lush pastoral rendition really opens one’s heart and stirs deep emotions. I’ve shed more than a few tears listening to it and am happy to now know I can enjoy it all year round!
What could be more English. It evokes winnowing wheat, country lanes, roads bordered in hedges and all is well with the world. I love this beyond words. Pure English genius. Genteel, refined and civilized. Yet still genius.
Amazing song so peaceful and memorable of the nice times of yesteryear I am a city guy from Croydon who is it a song so far away from my background bring me nearer to the more Conservative people 🤔
I listened to it all day long when I got the dreadful news that my daddy had passed away in London, we live in Barcelona, we were trying to bring him back here in Spain for a better care :( :( we were too late. he loved this song. This is for you dearest daddy Keith Beauchamp-Lait, a true Londoner. Rest in Peace and be happy up there, with your jazz, blues, vintage cars and old guitars.... see you soon 💔
I was first exposed to this song through those little singing musical lights so you can imagine my surprise when i joined orchestra and heard in high school that this song was more than like a 20 second jingle
Many thanks, Richard, for this nice video. I seeked a while for a playback to my own German version of this old English folksong, but no karaoke version fits my demands. So I discovered, the best version of "Greensleeves" is included in the "Fantasia On Greensleeves" of Ralph Vaughan Williams. Well, I had just to cut of the middle part, but I guess this will be acceptable for a song playback. But who did play this nice piece of music with Andrew Davis as conductor? I hope I get the permission to use the playback for my German version "Jugendliebe" you may find now on my UA-cam chanal (but got a claim anyway). And hope you enjoy.
I’m sure someone else must’ve mentioned that supposedly this was written by Henry the eighth. Now I am not sure if that means he wrote the music or the words I imagine just the words. But for all his being famous for what happened to his wives, he was also incredibly well educated and skilled, so I don’t know maybe he wrote the original music as well.

It is a more modern piece of music, created in the medieval style and based upon an Italian style of music that arrived in England after Henry VIII death.

Every time I hear Greensleeves it takes me back to 4th-grade choir practice. This and Men of Harlech. Our choir director was Welsh.
