Quick question, it's not 100% clear to me why you need to drain the cooling liquid? Can I replace the fan without this step?

I removed the top hose and tilted the radiator forward, this gave about 10cm of space to switch out the fan assembly.
Probably only lost half a litre of coolant doing it this way.
