There is a lot more to the back story of this landing and how the whole thing lasted hours and hours...that's not counting the overnight spent in Whitehorse before the return back to the gyros the following day. The landing was followed by the loss of comms with the support team and then a lack of response from the Whitehorse Airport and then getting a Canadian Customs crew out to them...except they gave up looking for them after 20 miles and turned back. It was a long night of adventures, angst and humour for all concerned...but still something very special for the two pilots out in the wilderness with no communications...they did amazingly well and the hospitality of the passers by was truly heartwarming. Onwards and upwards guys...but please...can we have some legs with nice views and no extra dramas, at least until you get to the lower 48 :-)
Was in the start of gyro's in Oz. Used volkswagon engines, 1900cc. Made our own wooden rotors, propellers, everything. A big learning curve, with Benson's teachings as our textbook. Soon had accidents, as people disregarded what worked and did their own 'thing'. Had to leave it in '82. People wanted me to 'test fly', did a few, but after 2 'misshaps', one, engine out at 250m, requiring a engine out landing in a directionally unstable vehicle. Two, swaged rudder cable came undone at 80m .vertical descent. Hard landing, broke the mast, but unknown to me, a tensioned cable inside it stopped it falling over and reducing me to slices. Then left, sadly. Did fly gliders in early 60's, and a 150 Cessna in 70's. Consider that Gyros are the safest aircraft around.
A lot of us Americans are that friendly, especially here in Texas. I would have put them up in my house for the night if they came through Houston area. Good going guys!
Gute Entscheidung zur gerade noch richtigen Zeit gemacht.Made a good decision at just the right time. Es bleibt spannend auf dem Trip! It remains exciting on the trip!
James this epic journey is fantastic, I’m glad to be able to witness this in my lifetime it’s normally something you only read about. Keep up the vlogs and stay safe 👍🏼
What an adventure thanks for sharing . I nearly flew into a Thunder storm in a microlight once, luckily I made to the airfield before it passed overhead.
Your landing spot on the highway certainly beat my poor weather divert from heading south over Scunthorpe to landing at Beverley Linley-Hill (EGNY) a few weeks back :-) Glad to see you both made it down safely and making good progress!
Outstanding video gentlemen! Good call on the weather - that lightning was VERY close! Also, great music to the video - adding another song to my collection :)
Cool and interesting clip. Another great benefit of the gyro. Imagine if you were in a fixed wing. That would have been a much different decision and outcome. People are just good all over and want to help. I love a story like this. Fly on!
Even Better than First Class , truly amazing , ( there's hope for me yet ) happy your both safe, I have done 42 hrs in training on the Gyro, hope I can ( when Qualified ) do some fundraising stuff. Your a Star....and of course must noy forget your mate in g-yrox .
All the way across Europe and Russia, and the hospitality from everyone you met was fantastic. Get to America and suddenly you're having to sleep in the hanger and you're not able to get a lift back to the airport... what does that say about USA's allegedly friendly people?
I’m not a fan of lightning at all, after a few close calls, & a partial strike as a kid, that went in the top of my left foot & out my right elbow. The blue POP, etched into my memory!!!!😬😬
Thanks for the amazing support guys 👌

Definitely one of the strangest phone calls the CBSA in Whitehorse would have gotten. 'You've landed where? In a what?'
Smiles and helpful hands are amplified when the going is tough.
Love the RV bit. Great decision to park the gyro’s. That wx looked pretty nasty and the boom confirmed it.....
Love the friendliness of the RV family that gave you a hot drink. Restores faith in humankind somehow. Brilliant! Superb footage too! Fly safe!

Probably the most gripping of the clips so far, but as said earlier, absolutely the right decision.
Stay safe, keep it going!

Loving the trip. Big gyro fan. It's like being along.
Excellent video. Glad you found some good old Pennsylvania hospitality in Canada. See you in Oshkosh!
So good of you to fly back over and wave. They won’t forget it!
Wow 😮, that was just in time James and Norm! As they say if you can see it you’re in range of being struck. Glad you’re both safe.
Been following you across the globe and its been a fantastic journey.
Awesome 👍 vid mates!! Enjoyed it all, especially the hospitality that was shown from the RVers!🤗
What an amazing adventure!
In Italy we say.... "a bad legal proceedings is better than a great funeral" good decision, SAFETY FIRST!!!!

Wow mate, not sure what I’d have been more worried about, the thunderstorm and lightening or meeting a Mack truck when landing on the road!, stay safe
Nice one Ketch. Hope you get better weather for the rest of the journey, but it's a fantastic adventure either way.
james, what a wonderful vlog, read about you in a German aviation magazin. loved it. found you here on youtube. thanks for doing it.

Just stumbled across your videos James. Superb stuff mate. Fly safe 👍
Fantastic footage great upload thanks James. Whats the general reaction when you pull up to the gas stations in a gyro?
You were really lucky, guys! Lightning is very dangerous for such small aircraft

Hmmm, not solo.
Good idea. Safer. And you don't suffer being alone.

Great video enjoying your adventure. Any chance that maybe Discovery or BBC make a doco from your adventure James?
