Today, we talk about Mon Mothma revealing herself to Tay Kolma & what support she's going to need from him for the rebellion.
“I’ve learned from Palpatine…” is so damn raw.
And "If I show you the stone in my hand you'll miss the knife at your throat" also goes hard
“I show you the stone in my hand, you miss the knife at your throat.” Amazing line.
*Great line indeed. So many great lines in the show.*
Hearing her name drop Palpatine's name TWICE this episode gave me shivers. She knows him exceptionally well and knows his history and what he's truly capable of. She served as a senator in the Galactic Senate from the Clone Wars and forward so she ain't playing.
You miss the knife because the stone only looks down ... oh wait, wrong show...
"the axe forgets but the tree remembers" also an amazing line from this show
And for all that talk.... she knew what she might have to do..........
I knew Mon Mothma was a inspiring leader but this show and scene made me really love her.
*Mothma truly is a great character for sure! I love her scenes that she's been in for Andor!*
Agree
This show made you really love *Mom* Mothma
She deserves a freakin' Emmy for this scene. So awesome.
*She did a great job in this scene for sure! Can't wait to see her in more scenes on the show!*
absolutely! how she was reminding him to smile ))) next level shit! bravo
This scene was performed to PERFECTION! Best scene in this episode. Such real and palpable tension.
*Truly is a great scene & dialog between Mothma & Tay Tolma. I'm looking forward to seeing how she'll implement herself fully into the rebellion per Andor.*
I love Tay Kolma's subtle smile when she reverses the 'my politics might be too strong for you' on him. Like, partly wondering the can of worms he just opened but also a bit excited and maybe relieved he's not alone in his views on the Empire
Turning his line around and mirroring him is one of my favourites as well. Very subtle and smooth way of letting him know what's going on.
right? excellent acting
The interior design of her home is absolute perfection. It conveys so many things all at once. Her wealth and status are obviously on display in the scale and architectural detailing (plus being high up in a literal ivory tower in coruscant is not cheap). It shows the fully detached reality many of the elites in the Empire have in relation to the sufferings of others, with its unabashed decadence. All creams and whites convey a sort of innocence in line with the fake facade she is putting on, while also the lack of real color beyond the pops of gold show there is no depth to it. Like an eggshell, a small crack could send her whole world toppling down. Her home's perfection reflects exactly as she feels, like she must always play her role perfectly without a single mistake. And yet, as we see how she isn't actually able to control the steps being taken in regarding to the Rebellion, she can't even control those who come into her home. Her husband literally invited many of her political rivals to their house and she couldn't do anything to stop it. To the audience, this gives us the sense that she isn't safe anywhere, and its played off brilliantly! Loving this show!
*Her not being safe anywhere speaks volumes to how great the show has been & what story that they're telling us the audience. Mothmanm definitely is at a place of being all alone right now with now, not even being able to trust Luthen with what they're trying to do as a rebellion. Such great writing & love Andor more & more.*
788yo88hhÿ utility😊
Its no surprise that the people who worked on House of Cards also helped with these scenes. Seeing Mon Mothma's rise into the Rebelian is done so god damn well in this show.
Also, listen to her theme. It appears to be a harp playing a gloomy yet euphonic melody which is so fitting for Mon Mothma in this show.
She didn't ''rise'' into rebellian, she always was one, since the last days of Republic. However, she rose into a great leader of rebellion and then New Republic.
the scenes in Curoscant are the best. This and the ISB scenes with Dedra. The dialogues are amazing
*THE dialog has been almost perfect to be honest! I truly love all of the scenes for the ISB & Mothma.*
That is because for ones , they didnt try to portray the empire as a bunch of useless idiots but actaully compitant people. Seeing the good guys outsmart or bearly win against compitant people is far more intreaging. This is why Andor was probably the best tv series they made for Star Wars.
who would have thought that a scene of pure dialogue between two characters would be the most powerful scene in a Star Wars tv show?!
*This scene & the ISB scenes are almost perfect!!!!*
ME! It's what I've been waiting for for years! This is what makes drama so interesting, and gives Star Wars gravitas. Some of the greatest scenes in the OT were just scenes of dialogue - Vader & Palpatine and Yoda & Luke in TESB, Luke and Ben in ANH - literally just conversation which lays out the gravity and history of the situation. The sequels had none of that intrigue.
It's why I wish they hadn't cut the majority of Padme's scenes in Revenge of the Sith. While not nearly as strong as this scene, they were still very interesting and showed the early development of the Rebellion. Honestly Disney+ should do extended versions of the prequel trilogy with the deleted scenes restored.
I am absolutely dumbfounded how Genevieve O'Reilly has mastered each scene with class and integrity, that the display of Mon Mothma requires. Her work in Andor makes the entire series even more worthy of a cinema screen than it already is with the rest of the cast.
Much love from Berlin!
This scene was so incredible, and made even more so in the context of her earlier scene with Luthen. The visceral pain of ... not just the betrayal but ... Mon Mothma is the only person in the galaxy who both comprehends what Aldani means, and also _cares_ about the suffering. Luthen and Kleya? That's the plan. Deedra? It's a strategic error. Eedy Karn? They deserve it. Maarva? Well, there's a lot of work to be done.
Mon Mothma not only _gets it_, she actually gives a damn about it. And she knows she's the only one. She's used to being the only one who gives a damn.
Of course, Mon Mothma gets over it, and has perfect composure as she uses Aldani in her pitch to Tay. But we know her icy strategic calculation is girded by a core of true compassion.
*Yes indeed. Mothma is working her own magic to get things done the way she feels is best. I truly lover her character a lot.*
This scene was incredible! Felt like I was on the edge of my seat the whole time and utterly captivated by Genevieve O’Reilly's performance. It was more exciting than a lot of big action sequences I've seen in SW.
*Yes indeed! O'Reilly is doing such a great job as Mothma throughout every scene. I truly am holding onto every word she says.*
Andor is the best dialogue driven content Star Wars has ever produced
We all love Luthen's awesome speech in episode 10 but, I recently came to see the parallel of Mon Mothma and him. She is sacrificing everything in her own life to keep the slim hope of the rebellion, & hope for the galaxy alive.
She's in a loveless marriage, has a daughter that is becoming more distant, a career that's little more than an act, to keep her 'under the radar'. To quote Luthen, "Her life has become a sunless place".
They've made me love a character that previously was little more than a glorified extra in ROTJ. Thank you Tony Gilroy!!!
Actually that's not her 'sacrifice', because she do love her daughter, and would have stay in her loveless marriage and job even if she wasn't funding the rebels. It's why her marriage exist in the first place, it is the tradition of her people. They exist not to keep her 'under the radar', they exist before the Empire was a thing. The sad part is that the loveless marriage and pointless career is what she is trying to protect by funding the rebels. Despite being the sources of a lot of unhappiness, they are her world. Her sacrifice is fighting to keep what has brought her a lot of unhappiness.
She is the opposite of Luthen because Luthen has deliberately shield himself from attachments, whereas attachments are all what Mon Mothma really has.
Thank god someone else appreciates this scene. Watched it over 10x with pure enthrall.
*Oh for sure!!!! If a scene really stands out to me, I'll share it for sure. But, I'll always find something interesting even in the least of scenes as well. But, yes. This scene was done really well.*
This scene is amazing. I also watched it multiple times. I wish you hadn’t cut out the part where she says smile. I love how she changed demeanors so quickly
I work in films and just came from a discussion with some of the people of Andor, Genevieve was also there. She talked about playing this role and said it felt cold playing the senator in the empire, but enjoyed working with the people on the sets and the crew. She really is a fantastic actress, deserves an award for her work.
Before this scene the show had already hooked me, back in episode 2 or 3, but this scene convinced me that this show is fucking perfect.
Like.. it takes revolution seriously. This is what it looks like to actively oppose government tyranny. With guns.
It's unsettling because it means opposing, with violence, things that feel mundane in the moment. What's in the length of a prison sentence? What's in the centralization of bureaucracy? What's wrong with levying a tax?
These are normal things, but the consequences are dire. Back in that scene where Mon Mothma confronts Luthen about the attack, she says that people will suffer because of it. He says that's the point--but there's more to it than that. People are already suffering. They just don't see the enemy for what it is. They see their government, they see a few bad actors, they don't see the whole system of oppression. Not until it reveals itself, just as Luthen wants.
It's a fantastic show and I simply can't recommend it enough. Who needs action when the drama is this good? Not that the action hasn't been excellent.
*All of what you said truly does play a key role in how this show operates. How the daily behind the scenes of the Empire function as well as the Rebellion. This is what I've been hoping for for years now. A truly behind the scenes look at how the Empire moved during these times before A New Hope crossed the eyes of many that began this far, far away galaxy journey back in 1977 & forward. I LOVE star wars at the core of my being & I can't get enough of it.*
💯
"I show you the stone in my hand, you miss the knife at your throat." is a GOOD line
The way Mon Mothma is written in this vs the way she was written in Ahsoka just shows you the levels between Gilroy and Filoni as writers
and the fact that one was a kids tv show and the other is a political drama (the Mon Mothma parts is)
though i don't say i disagree
She's kind of stealing the show. Now all I want is a Mon Mothma show!!!
*Yes, why not. I'll take a Mon Mothma series as well!*
I just realised the people in ISB uniform standing in the corner, they Rebellion really happens right under their nose
GODS THE WRITING IS STRONG. START THE NEXT EPISODE BEFORE I PISS MESELF
*Definitely great dialog in these scenes.*
YOU HAVE MONEY. I HAVE EXPLOSIVES. WE'LL JOIN A REBELLION.
Andor is what we should have gotten for Kenobi, we were robbed....
Yeah tbh obi wan is my least favorite of the star wars tv shows. Pretty weak dialogue and story. They put all their cards in the fan service area. Super forgettable show.
lets not forget that Kenobi was originally going to be a 2 hour long movie and that script was stretched out into 6 episodes of tv. it should have stayed a movie
She’s rocking it! Who would have thought that she would only just be a neat prequel cameo actress? Outstanding performance and I love the development of the character.
"Or perhaps you find my poltics a bit strong for your taste."
That wry grin on Tay's face as she throws his own words back at him. Genevieve O'Reilly rightly gets kudos for her acting however Ben Miles kills it here too.
Imma keep it real with you chief, Mothma a baddie
Why is Andor so amazing?:
Just look above! ^^^
They turned Senator Mon Mothma into a truly captivating character, and even used the same actress as before.
A woman that would literally sell her own daughter to defeat the Empire
Well her daughter is probably safer than she would be with a mom that is the Rebel Leader.
Also arranged marriages are not that bad. They existed for thousands of years specially in the higher levels of society. Some were sad some were very happy. Just like for love marriages. Just see the divorce rate.
And remember arranged marriages don't mean marriage for life.
Romans had arranged marriages AND divorced, which could be filed by women too
Love Andor. Cant help but Mon Mothmas actress gives me constant Gillian Anderson vibes.
*Same here. I'm continuously loving Andor every week.*
My favourite character from Andor. The actress is simply incredible.
The writing is excellent, I feel real people speaking in each scene.
Its not just the acting that makes this scene ... listen to the music. It belies the tension a major character trying to win over an ally.
When your mother says "Smile", you smile! 🤣
One of the very best scenes in the entire series. Such amazing acting.
consummate politician moving the pieces, assessing her surroundings, choosing her fights, incrementally affecting change in the spotlight when her real work is in the shadows.
also i like that her family and marriage was not out of love, but necessity and for appearance. shows how much this woman has had to compromise and how much of her is fabricated and repressed.
she is a more skilled, less conflicted, better connected, ruthless player than padme and it shows. she is avoiding every short sighted and idealistic mistake she made.
She should have had her own show! All her scenes are captivating and filled with so much treacherous wit.
What do I sacrifice? Everything…
This can also apply to Mon as well.
ABSOLUTELY NEXT LEVEL WRITTING! OMFG STAR WARS NEEDS THIS!
Watching this in April 2023, I'm reminded how great the cast, script, and performances were in Andor. In this scene you can really sense the risk Mon Mothma is taking. She's walking a dangerous line, and that tension comes across. I felt quite nervous watching it, even though I now know Tay is on the same side.
Makes me happy seeing character's like Mon Mothma and Bail Organa get the attention they deserve. These are the real heroes of the Republic but because they aren't duel wielding lightsabers and blasters while delivering cheesy one liners they get glossed over as boring.
I think everyone is equally important to defeat the Empire.
i thought the mon mothma scenes were going to be boring but this scene proved me wrong
*NICE!!!! Glad that the Mon Mothma scenes were great for you.*
Or perhaps you find my politics a bit strong for your taste?
SLAY QUEEN
She was outstanding throughout the whole season. The emotional weight she brought to every scene was palpable and perfect. 👍🏻 ❤
The way they presented Mon Mothma in the early episodes had me thinking we’d see a progression to her character as this flustered wannabe do-gooder to the stoic rebel leader we know… but oh god this scene showing that she had a public persona to hide her Machiavellian wiles the same way Palpatine did… chefs kiss…
Genevieve O'Reilly did an amazing job in this scene
I think that Tay Kolmas actor is great too
Star Wars is so much fun. They took a random character from the Ep 6 and made her pivotal to the story.
She didn't get much to do in the movies, so I'm so glad Andor is doing more with her character, she's so interesting. The funny thing is that her scenes are just her walking around talking about money and politics, which could have been boring, but instead they're super tense and engaging.
LOVE her!! And the show! ❤️
Nicolas Britell threw everything he had into Mon Mothma’s score
*Indeed. She did a great job!*
The dialogue is so good in this show. Why don't we have writing like this for other Star Wars stuff? It's infuriating.
This long struggle fort the rebellion to form, planning, raising money and forces to the point where they are already a deadly threat towards the empire without even palpatine knowing, is by far the most interessting part of the story in Star wars.
It hurts my soul to see this wonderful Character in the Hands of this Fraud Failoni when he made Assoka.
It's easy to see how this woman becomes head honcho of the Rebel Alliance. I hope we get to see how Palpatine finally loses patience with her and she escapes ISB.
Well you see it in rebels when she openly rejected the Emperor
She's quite fascinating. As a debut novelist, it makes me want to write a character like her, a noble double agent, always at risk...
Honestly, seven is my favorite episode of the series.
Another example of show, don’t (just) tell by Andor, which many of the other Star Wars show fail to do.
I think her husband can be trusted just as much as John Tubman could be by harriet. The moment she starts talking that Rebellion talk he would probably Mitch and turn her in and say something like it's for your own good because I love you that cheese.
*Yeah, that's sort of currently how I see her husband as well. Again sort of. He could be just making sure that she's safe & not getting into any trouble. And there's a very small chance that he's a plant from the Empire watching her every move from a distance. But, I'm going with what you said man. If she gets way too deep into what she's doing, he'd turn her in instead of being by her side through any & everything.*
Amazing quality in this show...and in the Star Wars Universe! Simply irresistible!
God, this show is a masterpiece in writing.
And Genevieve O'Reilly excelled at every scene.
The success of the scene ? Beau Willimon... the House of Cards writer.
This episode was written by Stephen Schiff (The Americans).
this is really what rebellion is all about, sacrifice everyone for freedom, great acting
Her not getting an Emmy nomination for her performance is still such bullshit. She nailed every damn scene she was in.
Look at this fantastic character moving the wheels of the rebellion to overcome the Empire and then the crappy sequels and the First Order basically rebooted the entire universe, making this character and all her efforts pointless.
*Well, hopefully Andor will cause them to continue to give her character more growth & great dialog & maybe have a series fully focused on her character as well. I definitely don't mind that at all.*
And wasted the limited time of the original cast. Imagine if Ben Solo wanted to pursue his grandfather Bail's legacy had rejected anything Jedi or Sith and his character arc was integrating the parts of his legacy. I just ignore the sequel trilogy as I did most of the Expanded Universe before it.
I am IN LOVE with Geneveve O'Reilly!!!!!
*SAAAMMMEEE!!!!*
Thats the man she should have married and they both know it. Such a great scene.
Will we also see bail organa and garm bel iblis in the future? Would love it if we could see scenes of the rebellion being built
*I feel like we could see them this season.*
He can’t not be in this! Organa is integral.
I hope the next season includes as a flashback the Seeds of Rebellion cut scene with Senator Amidala, perhaps as she meets up with Bail or whoever is the Naboo senator at this time. I wonder if Mon Mothma knows of Leia's birth parents at this point.
Mon Mothma and Moira...one person
❤
The politics of Star Wars is why I love the prequel era
Tay Kolma reminds me of Chancellor Valorum. Maybe a son of his ? Although, Kolma gives off more of a ''Captain'' Pike vibe.
*Many have said that they thought that Tay Kolma was Valorum. But, not the case at all. But, I do wonder where Valorum went off to after Palpatine took over as Chancellor.*
@@starwarsunlimiteduniverse Retirement. He was in a clone wars series at least once.
This is a strong female character, just like Leia Organa and Padme. All of them feminine and beautiful as well. This is what we want, not a perfect does nothing to deserve but wins at everything like Rey...
ahh shutup.
@@tomcross3000 I love you too!
Great scene.
*Very great scene indeed!*
The less he knows, the better for the both of them.
IMO, the best scene in the entire series.
I really enjoyed mon monthma in andor, Im excited to see her again in future episodes
This acting gave me chils
More like MOMMY Mothma, am I right
What's more than a thumbs up UA-cam?! Lucas + tip top screenwriting = ANDOR.
Smile
😃
Is she the only Rebel soldier who was there from day 1 of the war to the end?
Andor has the potential to be even better than the mandalorian
Sad that she can't trust her own husband
*This is true. Mothma doesn't know who to trust right now. So, she's looking outside of the regular channels. Even her trusting Tay Tolma is a gamble for her. But, she's going to do anyway & see what happens. And maybe her husband is just a regular husband & not a plant by the Empire who loves her but would still turn his back on her because of his own position that he has a with specific people that he wouldn't want them turning on him. So, yeah. A it's definitely a lot.*
@@starwarsunlimiteduniverse I think you're correcting in the fact that he would probably turn his back on her if it meant his freedom and he still got to keep the luxuries of his life.. he doesn't appear too loyal to her more like loyal to the lifestyle
What about Leida? Do you think she can trusted once she finds common ground with Mothma?
@@multifan75 *If anything. I believe that Leida would say that she doesn't like how her mom spends so mcu time around Tay Kolma to her dad. Giving Mothma's husband more of a means to halt Mothma's plans. Leida does show signs of questioning Tay at times. Giving him some stand-offish responses to him, while looking at her mother with confusion.*
What’s the song for this scene?
I think her husband is in on it. I think he is playing it exactly how she wants and having the exact public arguments to throw them off. A gambler, a lush, That's perfect for undercover work.
This is the leader of the rebellion baby!
Mon Mothma in the screen = sick dialogue
what is the name of the songtrack in this scene?
*I'm not sure. I'd have to look around to see if there's a listing of the songs that has been used in all 7 episodes so far. Maybe I'll be able to find something & then come back with an update if I do.*
The cloak and dagger of courscant politics is so prequel trilogy and I love it, more than any frivilous heroics, Luten and Mon and the circles within circles are so Dune its just great TV. The inner workings and sterility of the ISB is great too. But I think the show fails at portraying the brutality of the empire. Sure there's day to day living under the empire not everyone is under a crackdown, but damn, the knife edge she walks, highlight of the show.
hearing the narrative after sorta insults one. here's what you're suppose think.... just like "debates"
Yes, she is a revolutionary!
War is a continuation of politics by other means....
Great scene...
Very House of Cards feel to it.
*Wow. House of Cards is one of my favorite shows. But, I concur with you though. Great writing.*
@@starwarsunlimiteduniverse yeah, a couple of writers from that show now write for Andor. The talent transfers from Washington D.C. to Coruscant quite well.
I like your videos and particularly this one. However you have a tendency of improperly pronouncing the names of the characters. For instance Lutheran instead of Luthean. It could be because you do so at such speed that Luthean Rael becomes Lutheran Ael. Having a hearing loss, this causes confusion for me and the Closed Captions which simply print out Lutheran.
Sorry if this sounds like picking nits, however it is something that does cause a reduction of my enjoyment of your otherwise excellent videos.
The real Mon Mothma is Monica Mothmastien ... From Brooklyn.
i´m searching for the ost in this scene
Which is the soundtrack?😮
I really like the clone wars, rebels, andor, rogue one, tales of jedi / empire.... it really shows not everything was about the choosen one, it was about so many people and their stories. Like the rebellion was not waiting for Luke to return as last jedi, they were betting on any chance or hope that came their way. I like the anakin skywalker saga but luke and rey is total bs, like we know that force senistive children start showing signs and discover their connection with force early on mostly but luke and rey never did? and why would palpatine have a son which is good but we never see him or heard of him? I am so tired of the concept the last jedi and sith the keep squeezing on...
whats the music theme thats playing on background during first conversation?
*That I'm not sure. I'd have to look up to see if there's a name for the music for these scenes.*
@@starwarsunlimiteduniverse if u find anything let us know
I will try to find it also. The music score is great during this scene. 👍
Found it! Mon Mothma - Nicholas Britell. It's on spotify. Andor OST
@@Hummels_83 i dont think thats it
Or perhaps you might find MY politics a bit strong for your taste.
I'm going to start incorporating that into my vernacular
Sound track title?
I wouldn't trust Tay either
*I believe that she can. But it is hard to trust anyone right now with how things are going with the Empire.*
