I really thought this was neat. Lots of great pointers on it.Yes, there is no horse, but a horse is not easy to get ahold of or even film for that matter. Nice acting and real good casting. The kid was really good and you did a lot of cool changes/modernizations to it: the Elf King's face covered (you did think it was a demon), the daughter having a part, using the music as the only sound and not talking was awesome!!! And the color changing to contrast. Really great job!!!
Wonderful! Even without the horse, it was well done! It's hard to get a good child actor, but he did exelently!
It's actually great production, but they are supposed to be riding a horse in the middle of the night and I think you spell it Erlkönig.
Yes, the first line translates to something like “Who rides so late through the night and wind?”
To those who complain about the lack of a horse: This video is an interpretation of Goethe and Schubert. It's a valid realization, and I like the honesty of the presentation. Highly imaginative! Nice work with limited resources.
I remember hearing this composition and actually having nightmares despite my limited knowledge of German. I was a music student in college and at one time, was asked to learn three Chopin compositions and the Erlking. Unfortunately I was given only three weeks to learn them which truthfully wasn’t enough time as I was a full time student and worked part time. I got as far as learning the first page of “The Erlking”…let’s say that put an end to my nightmares.
I learned about this song yesterday. It's batshit insane and fairly creepy. The piano part is insane, I kind of love it.
very cleverly executed. great camera work. well synchronised with the lyrics of the music. brilliant. bravo!
Very scary...I remember in college being asked to learn how to play "The Erlking"; however, technically, esp. in the right hand, it is not simple to play(on the piano). I had been asked to play that and a few Chopin compositions at a recital. I remember having nightmares hearing "Erlking" play in my head even though the lyrics were in German. Though I didn't get to play it at the concert--but did play Chopin--the practice did relieve me of my nightmares!
It's too bad there is no horse, but you can' t expect the poor guy to randomly have a horse on hand to film with. I think this vid still brings the song to life in a really interesting way.
Great job!
Bravo!
And what an electrifying performance by DF-D, the very best ever, imho.
Okay so this is an awesome video. I loved the way you did the lights. . . it was almost dreamy in the parts of the Erl King. Man this was a great project. I like how when the Erl King was attacking the boy you panned over then panned back and he was gone it really shows how the Erl King is in the boys head. Overall man this was an amazing project. In my opinion you did very well !
B-Man Productions
alles mit der echten Stimmung : die Steigerung der Visionen mit der alles ûberschwemmenden Angst vor dem maskierten Tod, der gerade in einer Erlenlandschaft hantiert ... Bravo !
Ridicuous film. Magnificent performance of the song.
Fantastic short video! I always loved the story of the Erlking, and this portrayal is really good :)
WoW ! It's awesome !
You made an exellent work !
The Erlking is really frightening... And I think that is better without the horse: The Erlking can approach and touch the child. He seems very bad with his long black mantle. I adore !
Very good job iamjoesxastdlife !
And when you change the colors, it make a very good effect. Very clearly for the Erlking (who tries to attract the boy) and dark for the real life (the child is dying).
I really love this movie. Thank you =)
Personally, I think it works better without a horse--the transition between the boy with the Erlking and his father is much better than it would have been otherwise. Nice job with the light contrast on that too. Good job.
I am listening to this for my music appreciation class. It is Schubert's musical version of Goethe's poem about the legend of the Elf King. I have loved Goethe since examining his works in German class in highschool. Love the way Schubert made it sound to the music. This video is an interesting visual even though it doesn't quite follow the idea of the poem and music (should be on horseback).
this is one of the best video adaptations of this amzazing yet depressing poems by Goethe ive seen. u truely showed much emption and depth into wut was going on. excelent job my friend.
One of the most important aspects of this song is that the piano is supposed to represent their journey on horseback, not on foot. That's why the piano is "galloping," that's meant to symbolize the galloping of the horses.
I LOVE THIS VID i watched it at a musicianship class and i've been searching for 2 hours trying to find it thx so much it was a pleasure watching
The most epic song in history and still is to this day. A dramatic ending though. But still still a good song.
Great master piece and good production.
Who rides, so late, through night and wind?
It is the father with his child.
He has the boy well in his arm
He holds him safely, he keeps him warm.
love the effects. how it transfers from dark and hueless in the running scenes the the colorful scenes with the Erlking and the appearance/disappearance of Father-Erkling was very smooth and effective.
that kid has an amazingly deep voice
The erlking is one of my favorite poems of all time. I really appreciated seeing it portrayed in such a well thought out and unique format.
Dude that's not even bad! Okay, it is not 100 % like what the poem describes, but for a low budget production, this is really not badly done and an interesting interpretation! I particularly like the camera work, best part where the erlking chokes the boy, no cut: that's great work!
Meiner Meinung nah war dieses Lied ganz toll und das Film wurde sehr gut gemacht! Prima!
Really amazing!! Well Done!!
Thats great! One thing missing though, the galloping horse. Still a brilliant representation though.
that was really good! =) This is a beautiful work, i had to learn about it for my music history exam.
i know right? The piano part would be a great way to resemble the galloping of the horse and enhance the chase mood of it.
Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau singing, Gerald Moore in piano. [You can find the video on youtube - I believe this is the recording from the late 50s - they also made another recording in the late 60s, they are both amazing].
Wow, I think this is really brilliantly done! I can't believe you did this when you were sixteen, it's really great. The changes in the vibrancy and color in the video between the "real world" and the world of the Erlkonig are really fantastic and the composition and blocking of all the movements works really well. The kid is a really good little actor!
This is amaizing! Love it!
Wonderful work! I love the actors' play and the effects of the changing colour filter. The way it was directed was really amazing and inspiring! Excellent job!
Excellent job! Expressive… frightening… «In Goethe way», if you understand.
Thank you!
The boy has played perfectly. Really «schoene Gestalt».
Wow, first version I remember hearing. Love it.
I've been told about the Erlkönig when I was little. My baby sitter who's now my closest friend always told me this story whenever I acted up......and this song still creeps me the FUCK out...but I like it too.
VERY nicely done! WOW!
That was really good! 5s and favs!
fantastic work ! - great job ! wonderful !
Faszinierend umgesetzt, auch eine int'ressante Idee^^
Fascinating, well done, an int'resting idea as well^^
3:34 to 3:37 was well done :) i love this piece of music and the video was very good, though im pretty sure they're supposed to be on horseback :P
awesome!! I think it would work better if the black and white would change when the demon appeared instead when the son was with his father. Good job though!
I really enjoyed this. Great job!
Great Reenactment of Schubberts Erlking, Only thing i would of suggested is that he and the child are running thru the forest and at the end he makes it to town to only find his son dead, not dead in the forest but great job dude.
People can STFU about the horse. Not everyone has one. Get over it!
I loved this. I was very excited to find this acted out and I think it was done very well! I thought their pace could be more urgent, rather than looking like a leisurely stroll. I imagine the Earl King differently, like a rich, creepy man, but this version is fitting. And I liked the color shifts. Well done!
sehr gute arbeit ! hat mir gut gefallen. danke
good job ! i like it. thank you
wow this is really good! for you only being 16 i am planning to do this with some friends when im in highschool it is really great tho!!!
The singer has got to be the Berliner Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, the leading baritone of his day and the man chiefly responsible for resurrecting the art song (das Lied) following WWII.
the erlking means alder king also known as the elf king, but the orginial poem is that he son (who can only see the erlking) was not the elf king but his beautiful daughter...
I love how you changed the color and the mood for when the Elven King tries to lure the boy. very neat trick. a horse would have been intense, but totally understandable. I saw that they were collecting wood, but I'd complete that detail more...either show the father giving up once the boy becomes further frightened, or something. otherwise great ideas! :) (I'm a film and music major!)
that was really good. Great Job!
I expecially like the cameramovements, but in my opinion, it is pretty weird to see the setting changed from night to bright daylight. But again: very very nice catches with the camera!
I think Goethe would be overjoyed with this portrayal. He didn't like the drama of Schuberts music, apparently.
Wow, phenomenal job! Thanks! Who sang this? Was is Fischer, Quasthoff, or another Baritone? Love this piece, and the video was great! (Though, if I was the boy I would have been dead once he brought out the girl!).
However, for not having horses you did a very nice job and I like this interpretation. Thank you iamjoeswastdlife and thank you Franz Schubert!
Nice job man!!! I like it!
Excellent- Ok not following the text -but a great conception_Loved it
Good video. Great idea. Exactly right. That is the story!
they were walking through the forest in winter in the story and the elf king turns it to spring to appeal to the child showing the boy that he could supply many good things.
Great video! The camera work is really creative =) Who are the vocalist and accompanist in this recording?
It's a song by austrian composer Franz Schubert based on Goethe's poem. It's catalogued Op. 1.
Excellent acting!
It was very well done. I like it. :)
Well done. The first scene with the Erlking holding up the flower I find particularly potent. Why did you use the more colorful contrast in the Erlkings scenes? I would have thought it would be the other way around?
Die Erlkonig taken out of context= one of the most creepy stories of a stalker you will ever hear
Very nicely done, gives me chills when I listen/watch :)
Just wish it had a horse :/
@capperann the song is called der erlkonig if thats what your asking
well done, i'm having to memorize this in class right now
Okay, so let me explain the way I was taught about this in school:
The father and son are riding horses in the woods. The boy turns around and sees ErlKing. The boy informs his father on what he saw. The father turns around and sees nothing. The father tells his son that it was just his imagination. And they keep riding. The boy turns around again and this time, the ErlKing is closer. The boy informs his father again. The father still sees nothing. A few minutes later, the boy screams "DAD!" And the father turns around and the son isn't on the horse...
Nope, the poem ends with the boy dead in the fathers arms. Meaning the Erlkonig is probably just a symbol for death, and for all we know the father is racing his sick child to a doctor. The whole set of dialogue, to me, is the boy trying to tell his father he's not going to make it, but the father doesn't want to believe it.
Wow, your theory just answered my question above. And that makes it even more chilling. Thanks. :)
GalaxyGamer there's a video with this songs German and English lyrics side by side
+Meme Mangler It's an Art Song based on a poem, the piano also takes part in the story telling.
nice editing and filming skills
amazing job. well done!
I like the way he colors the voice differently for the different characters. the son's voice is brighter, the father is more masculine and dark and the demon is exceedingly creepy
That was pretty cool Good Job
I believe the Goethe poem is much more dramatic than this. It is a father who is trying to save his kid from death. The boy suffers deliriums because is dying...
I agree: the alternative dimension to which you allude is quite poignant. You should definitely revisit this piece when you've collected the necessary dividends.
But, perhaps the Elfking should be as colorful as his world. It's the contrast to the "real" people that make him unusual; therefore, he doesn't have to be [actually] shady. It should be his attractiveness to--specifically--a child that unsettles us.
Remember also that the father takes note of the magic near the end...

Great video!
This lieder is pretty intense. This is very good.
Why all you hating on his film. So it's not perfect. he just wanted to make a film based on a something he liked. @CupOfTeamFangirl why are wasting your time putting this guy down, saying that he should not even attempt this. It's a fan film. Grow up people.
The first phrase translates to read, "Who rides there so late through the night dark and drear?" Is it a big deal? No, but that's my ONLY compliant. Even if he didn't have a horse, I can still comment on his intrepration!
I think zonatec means that the kid doesn't look sick, and the father doesn't look worried. They're also not rushing like they're on their way to the doctor, they're just strolling through the woods.
Naprawdę ciekawa interpretacja ;)
My only complaint is that I always understood that they were on horse back, hence the pounding piano that opens the piece.
That was really cool
The ErlKing: King of trainers.
I love "Der Erlkönig" which Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau sings.
I LOVE THE RYTHEM
Awesome! :D
very nice!
do you have the download link for the song?
Very nice :-)
That's a really cool interpretation! I'm sure Schubert would have enjoyed it!
I know this is an old video but the piano is meant to be the horse as the father is meant to be ridding madly with his son while the erlking chases and steals away the boys life.
i thought they were riding through the woods on a carriage =/ but other that that is it an awesome composition ....
wow thats really impressive!!
very good!
この曲は馬が走ってる緊迫感の感じる音をソの連打で表現した曲じゃん。なんでゆっくり歩いてんだよ
馬は難しかったのかな…?
ちなみにこの曲の調で最初に連打しているのはソではなくファ
