  • Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey play themselves in this high-spirited film biography. The film follows the brothers from their early days all the way to their greatest successes. Director Alfred E. Green (The Jolson Story) uses the film as a showcase for some great music, including 'I'm Getting Sentimental Over You' and 'Marie'. Jazz buffs will notice cameos by such greats as bandleader Paul Whiteman and pianist Art Tatum. In fact, look for a special jam session featuring the Dorseys and Tatum. It's a perfect snapshot of the days when musicians could really swing.
    Director: Alfred E. Green
    Writers: Richard English, Art Arthur
Starring: Tommy Dorsey, Jimmy Dorsey, Janet Blair, Paul Whiteman, William Lundigan, Sara Allgood

    A big thumbs up.
Better than the current crap out of Hollyweird.
Loved the jam with Art Tatum.

Except for token Tatum all the black folks are excised from an historical film about jazz, an extraordinary accomplishment, not one fully human black character!
And Tatum is by far the greatest pianist of the era yet the scene doesn't showcase him, as if the Dorseys and other inferior white musicians are of Tatum's caliber!
This is Hollywood in 1947 under American apartheid; most white Americans didn't see black folks as fully human and the movie industry catered to these widespread racist delusions.
