He fought defensively early in his career, but as he got into his groove and hit his prime, he started to fight more like this, which is a excellent combination of offense and defense. He fought like this in many fights. Watch his fight with Pineda at 140 pounds, or Jones at 135, or McGirt at 147, etc.
Pep also broke his back in a plane crash and was back in the ring 6 months later! Unbelievable I think its very difficult to say who had the better defence. Their styles were very different. Whitaker didnt fight as often but did move up a few weight classes. .
This is a Pernell style ass-whooping of the highest caliber. I remember Pernell walking thru the olympic fights in much the same way...That's how far I go back fellas.
I didn't talk about dropping off, I merely meant that he became more defensive, which is a testament to his versatility. He fought bigger, better and stronger fighters so I guess he had to re-model his style.
This is coming out of the amateurs where being more offensive is a necessity. Boxers can’t afford to give up rounds, when they only have 3. Usually it takes a few to figure out the openings and where to counter. Like some defensive fighters have to give away around to feel their opponent out. With 10-12 rounds or even 6-8 they can recover from a lost round or two.
What do you mean what happened to his game? He went on to become one of the greatest fighters of all time is what happened. You act as if he dropped off. Do you consider dominating and unifying at LW and WW, winning titles in 4 seperate weight classes, fighting 4 HOF'ers and only legitimately losing to one when he was a shot fighter, reigning as the Pound for pound king in the mid-90's, and proving his place as one of the absolute best pure boxers in the history of the sport, etc. dropping off?
yer ur rite, the guy had the ultimate comeback, going back to be champion and beating saddler who would make mince meat out of most featherweight champs today, also pep is the only boxer ever! to win a round without throwing a single punch, he even picked the round before the fight too, he was amazing, but you are correct sweet pea did move up in weight as pep did not, but back then remember there were fewer weight classes which meant a jump to another would put a huge strain on a boxers body
fair enough dude, everyones entitled to their own opinion, but yer they are the best defensive boxers ever, i think wat it mainly came down to was instinct and also having no fear of being hit, to have styles like those 2 would mean if something went wrong they wud be prepered to tek one in the face
really?! after 241 fights, 229 wins, only 11 losses and 1 draw, Pep boxed a total of 2017 rounds in the 241 bouts during his 26 year career, a considerable number of rounds and fights even for a fighter of his era. to sweet peas 46 fights 40 wins with 4 loses 1 draw and 1 nc. im telling you the records because it shows how much experience and obvious raw talent each boxer had, as well as how long they had to do it for, therefore in one sense pep had a better defense, sweet pea is amazing but....
2nd best defense, look at willie pep, you need to know the history behind the sport and its godfathers. just have a look at him then come back to me. cheers.

Sweet pea was a pure artist.
Best Boxer Ever! Case Closed.
Brutal
crisp, sharp punching; good head movement; body punching in the first round was nasty! imagine if Whitaker was a harder puncher!

Gotta respect Mayweather and Toney, but Sweat Pea was somethin else..
damn whitaker really gave him a beating
What happened to Whitaker's game after this? It's probably just that he fought bigger guys when he was at the top.
I've watched the McGirt fight.

Didn't Pernell recently got out of drug treatment a little before the fight against Trinidad?
his opponent could scrap too

fall man fall!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sweet Pea was great. Its a shame he would've been greater had he not dabbled with coke.
But Pacquiao already throws punches with power... Sweet pea had none.
