VOLA - Alien Shivers (Official Video)

- We’ve been looking much forward to sharing this video for the track “Alien Shivers” with you. It’s made by just the two of us and almost entirely by hand, so it is indeed a very personal project. We are both happy amateurs in the field of animation, but we’ve put a lot of hours, effort and love into this video, which we hope will shine through!

For this video we worked on our self-build multi-plane animation stand, a wooden structure holding four layers of glass, allowing us to create a sense of depth in the images. We used the same stand for the video for the song “Emily” from Inmazes (2015), but this time we’ve upgraded our setup with a horizontal camera mount and the animation software Dragonframe, which has been a great help, making it possible for us to actually see roughly what we were doing, while we were doing it.
The video is a stop motion-film consisting of thousands of still images shown in high speed. Every frame is build up on our animation stand with handmade cutouts and different materials that we found, outdoors and in our kitchen mostly, giving shape to the landscape. For the earth we used coffee, the sand is sugar and the forest is made out of leaves that we dried and pressed in heavy, old books and moss from a nearby park. The water is painted on a transparent material called “cells” with a mix of dish washing soap and dark blue oil paint. We liked the combination of “real” and “faked” objects and effects, which we think gives the video a mysterious vibe with everything looking slightly unreal, surreal or out of place.
It is indeed a very time consuming and arduous process making a video this way, but we like the organic look you get, when you work with physical óbjects rather than digital. We’ve also started to actually appreciate that working this very DIY-way, in our own living room, there are many elements, that you can’t control perfectly: You never get exactly what you imagine, but sometimes you get something even better.
Being only two people “on set”, we have been sharing a lot of different roles between us. Anne made the cutouts, props and painting and also the color grading. Nicolai did the animation, making the cutouts move and being the one running the camera. We both got our hands into storyboarding, building the sceneries, editing and coffee-making.
The storyline of the video is loosely inspired by a short story by the argentinian writer Jorge Luis Borges called “The Circular Ruins” (1940) in which a mysterious, anonymous man set himself on a task to dream a human being and make it come to life. We think it somehow relates quite well to the lyrics Asger created for the song, even though we did not intend to make a video that “explains” or picturize the lyrics in any way. Another great inspiration is Yuri Norsteins beautiful film “Tale of Tales” (1979), which sparked our fascination for stop motion animation in the first place.

ALIEN SHIVERS
Everlasting friend why are you so certain?
Why do you defend this contagious burden?
Are you still here?
This confrontation killing the perfect one.
Alien shivers stalling his victory run (come along with me). Drifting away as the dopamine ray of his sun appears.
Radiant and free.
Eyes were sore from laughter.
Now you claim to see purpose in disaster.
Are you still here?

Discovering VOLA might just be the best thing that happened to me in 2021.
What got me by in 2020. Enjoy
I agree
I’ve been listening them for the past hour with tears of joy in my eyes lol what a fucking tornado of fresh air , I absolutely love them
I second this...
2020 🙋🏻♂️
While most prog/djent bands nowadays sound so similar and over complicated, here comes Vola with a completely new sound. This album is amazing and original, I can't stop listening to it! Keep it up guys!
Some songs are insane earworms, such as the album name title.
You described them perfectly. Like you said, I love me some prog but often times it's too intense from start to finish, vola really did give it a mellow and unique touch.
They sound insanely fresh and unique. They are completely their own sound
Dat intro riff doe... I was so pumped when it came back in as the outro.
nice cover picture bro, absolutely love that EP
I would like to see the tabs because it's really complicated...
@@gluonpa6878I remember learning it when it came out. I found it much harder then it sounded to me
Yes!!! The most epic thing 😎 fucking awesome 👌 👏
I get that feeling when I play it
i really like this
YES BOYS. This, and everything from the new record is sounding killer!
They are like minded European brothers to you, right? (coming back again soon?)
Such a great album ay. Best of the year for me.
@@nickpollard9998 Agreed
This song represents the maturity that the band has reached. A perfect sound
very awesome
What do you think of the new record?
THE BEST BAND I HAVE EVER HEARD. ITS THE PERFECT LISTENING EXPERIENCE FOR ME. THANK YOU SO MUCH. PLEASE ONLY MAKE MUSIC LIKE THIS.
As a former addict I just want to thank you for putting out a song like this. It seems that this is written from the perspective of a close friend or loved one to the addict, but I have a certain appreciation for it as one who is a former addict.
Applause of a distant crowd is currently my favorite album. This song seriously slaps.
This is a freakishly good song. The synths/piano + heavy riffs bang so hard, as well as everything else.
Thanks David💙
This music is not for everyone, it's for those with very good taste in music. I'm glad that everyone is here and enjoying this beautiful piece. Thank you VOLA
XD
Don't break your back from all the patting you're doing to yourself
Very Steven Wilson/Jess Cope inspired. Love it
Criminally underrated band. My fav song by y'all.
discovered so many good bands in 2022. how did these guys evade me for SO LONG, i used to spend weeks at a time scouring the internet for new metal
that intro/outro riff is giving me the shivers
I love these guys... I wish them nothing but success and peace in their journey...
I slammed the like button even before the video started. Why? Because I know Vola is never gonna let me down, and always gonna build me up.
Well, seems you were wrong this time :(
@@juanpablovivanco9254 what are you talking about this song is amazing
Привет, Тимофеев. :)
my life is much better from listening this daily when driving - same for the whole album, actually. stellar song and album. it's even hard to rate them :)
Yesterday I heard this band for the first time. Today I am a big fan. And I know that I will always be. Thank you for being Vola.
Thats awesome to hear. Thank you for supporting our music:)

I've recently found out about Vola and I have been thoroughly been listening to Witness (very good album btw) and I am trying out the rest of their music. Get to this track and I can't stop watching and listening to this. There is just so much here. The video itself is so charming to me. The art style of the animation is filled with personality and thought. I can really see the love and care put into it. It is such a stunning art piece on it's own merit. The first minute alone sucks you in with curiosity. Why are they there and what are they looking for? How I interpret it is a search for meaning. Looking for an out of body experience for knowledge or a rebirth of sorts. Then the details throughout the video. Almost every frame cut is in time with the song. The few frames of screen burn of sorts during the rebirth section is just such a nice touch although I don't know if it's intentional but I hope it is, then during the line "claim to see" the hands pull out eyes. (I know kind of on the nose but they didn't have to put it there at that time but they did anyway) and then the heartbeat drums during the new heart scene. I can not get enough of this.
Then the song itself is so damn good. To repeat what others are saying the riffs, the synths, the piano, the bass, and the drums are just stellar. What really shines for me is the mix. The engineering and composition is fantastic. Where the instruments and vocals are placed throughout the mix is an overlooked art too so I applaud that. Then there's how the song is made to get stuck in your head in a good way. I can't get the chorus out of my head, but to give credit where it's due so far from what I've heard Vola always has catchy choruses. I'd have to listen the this an impossible amount of times to get tired of it so not anytime soon. I wasn't intending on writing paragraphs but this song and music video is something very special and I hope they see and read this and know that their effort and talent wasn't unnoticed. Truly talented and passionate group of people and I am eagerly looking forward to new stuff from Vola.
TLDR; This song and video are REALLY good :]
Thank you:)
The 1st/main riff, backed with keyboards, is a killer only VOLA can write.
Hope y'all continue for as long as it brings you joy. For our sake, hopefully forever
This chorus has been invading my brain for days. In a good way
Still refuse to believe how this video has only 160k views!
guys,we don't deserve you,this is...i don't know,this is far beyond good musicianship,this is pure art!
That riff gives me alien shivers.
Spotify again pointing me in the right direction! Big love from Australia! Loving the ambient/dystopian vibes of this banger!
Glad to hear you like it Andy:) Hope to see you when we get to Australia at some point!
@@volaband check for the unblinking man with the stupid, satisfied smile front and centre!
@@andyp6169 Will do;)
This track has now become my favourite Vola track, overtaking starburn.
If people watched the video that was created as part of the album process they’ll realise they recorded the album with a live sounding approach in mind and instruments were created more loosely. I love this approach and the fact it’s not completely perfect and tight, it gives it atmosphere.
Don’t at all get the flat comments either. The songs completely in key. 💥
Looking forward to the album guys.
I can't stop to hear this song.
This band is one of a kind, I can't wait for the rest of this album to come out.
"Witness" is definitely top #1 album of the year in my personal list
After some time (basically some hundreds repeats of witness) it's finally time to re-listen ur older works ;)
Still taking goosebumps tho, great job guys :)
Greetings from Ukraine btw ❤️ Can't wait you occasionally coming in old Kiev to freaking blow this city :)
I come back to this song every time I need a pick me up. Idk what exactly it is about it, but that chorus always puts me such an awesome place emotionally
This is so good it gave me chills! You guys aren't Musicians- you're Mages! This is audio magic!
I been following this guys since the release of Smartfriend. After listening Inmazes they got me hooked up. By the 3 songs already relesaed of Applause of a Distant Crowd I would say this one will be amazing too. Thank you Vola for your music!
What's your favorite from Inmazes? Brilliant album. You should check out the merch by the way. They have some really cool shirts for the new album.
@@madeofwax92 Inmazes was the first song I heard from them, thanks to discover weekly on spotify. love the album and near all their material so far. I've got my physical copy on way!
It has to be Your Mind is a Hopeless Dreamer. Although all the songs in the album are amazing.
These gentlemen deserve all the good that is and already coming... Knew it you guys would have shows sold out...
Welcome back my beloved Vola!!!!
They missed me so much! Their songs are evergreens for me.
Such a great song shows you can be prog and super emotional at the same time
Most anticipated album right now!
Song called Alien Shivers is exactly 4:20 long. Nice

I can never listen to this track once and move on… always at least 3 times in a row! 🙏🏽❤️🔥🔥🔥👽🛸
I love that you guys do your own stop motion videos. Seriously inspiring shit.
Oh yes, this is the riff I've been waiting on for so long now! Glad to hear it prominently featured in this track, altogether an awesome song!
This is unique band, I have never heard mix like that of guitars and synths from other bands, I feel like Im in ocean and sound waves covering me from all sides
Yeah - you guys know how to write MELODY and not over-complicate things! Loved watching you at Damnation Festival last year (and Bloodstock!) and can't wait to see you you play again soon
Thanks:) Hope to see you on our headline tour in September!
Nicolai, VOLA.
what a banger! Excited to see this live in two days :D

This album can’t get here soon enough.
I will never tire of this song.
I'm excited to see how the album turns out!
This and Stray the Skies are my two VOLA faves
Love this track, reminds me of a band called Dredg, specifically their album El Cielo which is a stunning album.
Fan of dredg as well and el cielo is indeed stunning.
Absolute gem of an album, sadly forgotten.
Yup... i recomend you check out Esfera-all the colors of madness. Great band and fantastic album
Catch Without Arms was a great album too
miss those guys..(dredg)..
Absolute Mad Lads.
SO SO SO AMAZING!!!
Absolutely magical
this song is awesome, im glad my co worker recommended it
Your Co-worker knows what's good! :)
Wonderful song, fantastic album!
Cool!
i found u guys in 2020. You play amazing music, so impactful and chill at the same time, i think u guys are one of my favorite new bands. im a Metalhead , but ur music is so amazing I was captivated by it
We are very happy to hear that!
vola has crafted some of the most amazingly brutal and beautiful riffs known to humanity
this song is amazing
I absolutely love the versatility of your music, from "Smartfriend" which is dark, heavy and groovy af, "Ghosts" which brings nothing but good vibes, and then this, which just takes you to a whole different dimension. You guys bring so much to the progressive metal scene, and I don't know how you haven't completely taken over the industry.
Apparently sometimes they are too soft for metal elitists and a bit too heavy for non metal listeners and there are only so many of us who appreciate the both side of the music
All of the love and hard work was absolutely worth it! Thank you for this gem!!!!!
Gorgeous sound mix. I keep trying to find a way to describe it but I'll just leave it at the fact that your music resonates with me at a level beyond what I can accurately or adequately describe.
Very happy to hear that Chris:) Thanks!
Как раз то - чего не хватало. А риф гитарный и атмосфера в треке просто отличная! Так держать ребята. А то Inmazes уже заслушался!
I have this song stuck in my head literally for a week and a half, which is coincidentally when I first heard it
Can't wait for the new album
Guys, looking forward to your album. It will be amazing and we all know it. Every track released so far has been a dream, best of luck on the release and cheers from the USA!
These guys are just unbelievable. I'm so excited for my physical copy to arrive, and I'd love to see them come to the states.
best band evert. best track ever
Love is shining through! Thank you)
My favorite song from this album!! Amazing!!
Love this
Fav out of the three songs released so far! Awesome work guys, can't wait for the new album. That opening and closing riff can't be listened to at a high enough volume!
Can't stop listening.... 🎶
I just could listen the intro cause i'm at work but i gotta say the guitar in the intro is amazingly great and heavy as I was expecting. Guys keep doing music which inspires and passionate.
You're killing it, guys! Seriously great piece.
Absolutely phenomenal band and music video. 10/10 for damn sure. 🔥
Love

BEST!
Love this song and band! I love the live version on Live from the Pool. Vola, Plini, Jakub Zytecki, David Maxim Micic, Voyager, and Massface should do a big tour if possible! ❤️😉
Best song on the album....
The amazing find of the day.
Great song amazing animation!
VOLA.. Im in love
Happy to hear that Peter!
One of the best headbanging of my life when Asger guitar enters on this song played in Santiago (Chile) (November 25th, 2022)
that chorus needs to be brought out
Cant get enough of this song, guys!! Loved seeing you live in SLC, Utah! Cant wait for you guys to come back.
This song has pretty much become the anthem of my home
Christ this song is brilliant
Thank you Vola for this nice and Beautiful pice of Musik and Art. Really loocking Forward to the Album!!!
Just perfect. ... One of a kind....
Amazing album !!
Love it.
This is easily the best thing i've heard all year! I'm so impressed with how well you guys blend all these different genres it is incredible! Me and my mate are going to do a full instrumental and vocal cover of this soon! This band deserves every bit of success 👏🤘
I love that melody run at 1:36 and 3:21 so much
I hope the album has punchier mixes, but either way, you guys have proven yourselves to be simply magnificent. Wonderful song and video, as always.
Incredible song, as always
I really like all of the individual elements. The riffs are great, the singer is awesome as always. I really wish that it had some punch, though. Feels a bit flat. But again all of the actual performance elements are great.
In live it slays dude, this and ghosts just ripped off my face and that was the first time I saw and heard them, but damn it's good that now I have another favourite band! I went to see Monuments and Vola stole the night. :)
@@Th3W0rst0n3 I 100% concur saw them last night and nothing flat about them!!
Best track from the new album
this is... beautiful. Idk how much effort you guys put on this, but the key word is talent. This is very talented.
