You speak a lot of sense on many levels. This kit makes huge sense to anyone looking to get into the hobby or simply prepare for what may come. Good no nonesense and tough kit at a sensible no branded price. Thanks for sharing.
Another excellent, common sense video. The constant advertising pressure from companies ( and You Tube Gurus) that only super expensive kit is suitable for an overnight in the woods, is the obstacle to overcome. " Playing about at Bush Craft" that comment made me laugh, that's all it is really in truth though, and selected surplus kit allows folk to actually get involved without breaking the Bank. 👍
After watching your very informative and entertaining videos I've not only learned a lot but after watching your vid where you recommended dog dish for a plate I went into a local charity shop and found a dog bowl a bit scatched but it can be polished, then in the same shop a biscuit container both in stainless steel, I just need to fashion some wire for hanger for that, both for £3•50 both lighter than my trangia pan and cheaper than billy can . Many thanks.
Great stuff Neil My only niggle with the MSS was trying to put the summer bag inside the medium bag, made it too tight to get into. However using the summer bag as a quilt over the medium bag all inside the bivi was perfectly fine.
The patrol bag is supposed to go over the heavier bag, that is the way it is designed. And goretex bivy cover over both. Used them extensively in the Army, bought two sets for my son and me. Slept like a baby in the winter in the Sierras using the system with the issued pad under, in a snow trench. As well as using the patrol bag in Iraq, in milder temps.
Here in the States, so many surplus stores that you could actually walk into & shop have gone by the wayside. We've got about a dozen well stocked internet stores, and shopping those & comparing prices can get you some deals... i.e. USGI Aviators canteen/flask (half qt/1 pint) I was able to get mine, brand new unissued for $2.99 ea. Other places want as much as $11 ! Decent Euro/Brit surplus is sometimes found on eBay. Nice video
Great advice! I started out with quite a bit of military surplus gear and I'm still using most of it at times.. For short forays into the woods it can't be beat. If going on a multiple days hike in the mountains, it's not the best option due to weight. One has to bear this in mind when making plans.
Nice video. I have the DPM Basha, DPM Bivi Bag as I prefer it in my local woodland, which has lots of shadows, it blends in better than the current MTP pattern. Also a 58 pattern bouncing bomb kip bag, which is the sort I was issued with. Yes, I know by today's standards that are lighter, etc. But, my 58 kip bag has never failed me in cold temps, especially when using the basha too. A very nice review of "Bomb proof" kit.
Really enjoyed this, so much so I’ve subscribed to you. Love military gear. Cheap & of course well tested to a standard you can trust it with your life. Cheers 🍻- Andy
Once again, you prove yourself one of the best bushcraft UA-cam channels, on the planet. Wish I'd seen this a few years ago. The video you did on customising the bivvy bag was another great inspiration. All hail the bushcraft king, long may you reign. 😊
have just recently got my swedish army wool pants from nearly 100 years ago. and my austrian “dachstein” wool sweater sewed in some wooden buttons in both of them tonight. great great great quality pants, and for 25€. have 2 romanian plash palatkas on the way too. 🙏🏼
Good Morning Neil .. 👍👍👍Another good one .. thanks. Your reviews on Budget Bargain Kit is always a worthy read. Kit that can be accessible to all at reasonable prices. Yes, you nailed it in mentioning a difference between 'bushcrafting' and ultra-light hiking .. distance covered. 'Bulk and Weight'? I'm 72 with 'kaput' knees and hips feeling their age .. both ably assistend by arthritis 😏. On not-so-good days, I cart my stuff in a 'shopping trolly' (the ones that get pulled along behind one). Being fortunate to have the Rhine and my local Forest within a 150m radius of where I live .. and with an extensive, well-maintained highway and byway Walking / Trail Network on hand, easy peas 😊. I'm currently mulling over getting myself a 'cart' to carry my gear, thus being kind to the hips and knees. The commercial 'Outdoor Trekking' ones tend to be pricy so, more mulling to be done on making my own. As a kids we made plenty 'go carts' from scrap wood and pram wheels so .. Just an idea for those who find bulk and weight an obstacle. Don't carry it .. cart it! Am looking to more from you please, in this genre. Take care ..
Being here in the US I got an entire US MSS a few years ago off of eBay for under $60. You just have to look. The black sleeping bag had a few small burn marks in it but it didn’t effect the integrity of it & I’ve used the system going on 9 years now all 4 seasons…..
I payed for my Dutch military sleeping bag fl. 25,- about 25 years ago. Nowadays in winter i add a summer Nomad bag inside it cost me €25,- a couple of years ago when i started feeling the cold more. A raised bed with debris beneath it did wonders. I also use a surplus military cutlery set or the Göffel replica both are between €5,- and €10,- in the surplus store. The Göffel i use with the Dutch surplus mess tins the cutlery set with the German mess kit.
I bought a British Army Basha off a private seller on evil bay, with 5 m of 8 mm rope, a bungee cord, two small bungee loops and 8 heavy duty metal pegs for about the same price as a 3 x 3 tarp.
I use a MSS regularly in winter with the Arctic sleeping bag and liner. As I sleep pretty hot I may use a lower rated sleeping bag if the temperature isn't going below 10 degrees.
I have an old Bivy which is great. It could probably do with some TLC. I have cleaned the mud etc off it, but can you recommend a reproofer? I know that you did a video on reproofing a poncho, but the bivy is breathable. Would you use the same stuff?
@@greencraft4783 great video btw. I have now bought two of the wool roll necks you recommended in your last video. Great bit of kit and super recommendation
Hi Neil. Hope you are well. What’s your view on British Army Ration 24 hr packs, for your outdoor food supply, when camping, etc,as our local surplus place stock them for cheap. All the best.
I just buy individual elements - main meals, all day breakfasts, peanut butter sachets, cinnamon/maple syrup buns - cheap in job lots on ebay (who cares if some are officially out of date, I'm pretty sure if stored well they'll keep for years more) and supplement them with other stuff I buy separately e.g. trek n eat biscuits also biscuits brown (for old times' sake), small pate portions from the Polish shop, bacon grill from Iceland (also for old times' sake) and all kinds of other stuff, to make up my own ration packs. For example Cadburys' hot chocolate sachets from Tesco are cheaper than army ration pack hot chocolate sachets.
Do you know if the BCB canteen, cup, and stove are available in USA or must be ordered from across the pond? Very much appreciate you videos. Salute from the state of Louisiana USA
They're available on ebay - several choices from camo style of pouch (black, DPM, Desert, MTP), to one stainless cup & canteen; stainless cup with plastic cup & canteen... You might have to search under "crusader cup canteen system" as well as "BCB". I have the BCB Fire Dragon cooker - it leaves Esbit in the dirt. I'm in Louisiana as well Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler !
You need to make another video now. Lol. Buy 3 more Bashas. If i am correct, the bashas should snap together such that 2,3,4, or more bashas snap together.. just my guess. Like a big 6Mx6M square or line of basha tarps.
you like shopping for Dutch ey, me to, this might sound silly, but as a Dutchman, i pay MORE for some items i see sold in the UK, as they sell for in The Netherlands themselves... 😂
I've got a few bits of really great KL surplus kit. Such as poncho in woodland, canteen with stainless steel cup, ss mess tins (British were aluminium), 65 litre rucksack, and inflatable sleeping mat. Dutch military gear is very robust.
Not having a British basha can someone tell me if they can be joined together along the same lines as the Australian Army hootchie to make a larger shelter?
Another great video, Sir !!! Thank you for sharing !!! Could you do a video on the "Commando Rope" that you spoke about in a previous video, please ??? The one that they could use and combine to cross creeks, rivers, climb down steep embankments, etc. I believe that they had a loop at one end, and a toggle at the other. That would be greatly appreciated, Sir. Thank you, in advance. Keep up the great work !!!
Military bargains are fantastic, great deals and excellent quality lasts much longer and very reliable! Please keep this series going.

Thanks for focusing on the affordable side of things that are accessible to more people.
Army stuff is brilliant!
Good video and items Neil , thanks for sharing , God bless !
Great video about great gear. Thx greetings from Westernaustralia
Good afternoon from Syracuse NY USA across the pond brother
If it’s good for the Army it’s good for me makes a lot of sense! In my opinion, thank you Neil
Sound Advice as usual and We All need Good Kit as Cheap and Reliable with Money been Tight right now , So keep up the Good Work Simon and Thanks .
Who is Simon ? Keep up the Good stuff Neil !
Brilliant bit of kit, surplus shops seem to be alot better in The UK than over here in the US! Thank you for sharing.....ATB
Charles surplus out of Chicago is great, I order from them all the time.
If it wasn’t for military surplus I wouldn’t have any gear or clothing. Great video Neil , keep them coming.
Excellent! Thanks for sharing!

There's a use for a basha not noted, you can swing your kids around in them too :)
Great info, and presented in a nice and understandable way. Nice one mate.
Cheers.

Thank you for a good bit of useful information. Have always been prone to military, since the days of the forces. Stay well & safe .. Cheers.

I used to use my goretex bivi bag as my waterproof inner for my burgen that way it was multi purpose and didn’t take up any extra room
Great reviews and advice.
I subbed just because of his friendly face and voice
if you swap the flat cord for hood with 2mm paracord it works a lot better.
I got the modular sleep system, not looking back ! Much better than my snugpak turd ! Don't waste your hard earned...
Love to see the links for the products, but there are none ….
Besides that, great video, thanks 👍🇨🇭
Good idear with the bivvy bag
Great advice as usual Neil. Had a look on Greencraft website, had to chuckle at your picture, how many decades old is that mate?😂😂

Nice sales pitch you should work for the Defense department. Have fun stay safe.
Oh yeah, no car, I don't drive. Cycling or tabbing in. My Burgen pack weight is 19.2 kg. I weigh 115.7 kg.
The MTP basha is a little bigger than the older DPM ones 👍
Love me some surplus gear 🤠
Bought a lot of army surplus stuff for my emergency bag, some of the liners and winter weather covers were less than €6 each online

Tech-Wash by Nikwax is very good for breathable clothing
@@greencraft4783 great video btw. I have now bought two of the wool roll necks you recommended in your last video. Great bit of kit and super recommendation
Same/similar items are available in the U.S. as well

The videos are great yes ... but the prices after you're last video went up like crazy
Good vid. I noticed on Ebay that some "British surplus" bashas are made in China. I won't buy those.

what do you think of snugpak clothes for extreme cold
Love the gear but not particularly budget friendly here in Australia. :-(
Orders £40 bivy told shipping will be £60.
Ouch.
Love my mss!

No, they can't
I can't afford your 'bargains', I'll keep looking elsewhere.

everyone blags on about dd tarp 3x3 f hmk.. utter garbage u need a 4x4 f decent cover wi straps too
