What baffles me the most about Shada's production is the reason for the strike that killed it: it was apparently over which union owned the rights to operate a complex clock prop used for a different children's show called Play School. To reiterate, the reason Shada was never completed was because of *A GODDAMN CLOCK.*
I know the original comment is years old now, but I've never actually seen any evidence of this being the origins, does anyone have any? There was a lot of union action at the time, and whilst I've heard the clock mentioned as an area of dispute (is it a prop or electronic?) I've never seen it mentioned as an instigator.
Fact is a strike took place at the BBC at this time because a lighting rigger guy was punched by another guy at the BBC so the unions were called in, this also caused the last epidose of Fawly Towers 2nd series to be heavily delayed until several months after episode 5 was shown. All the other strikes around the country were about pay caps and rights being removed, Thatcher came in and made it even worse, I'm just glad I was a small kid at the time and not have worries of an adult trying to make a living.
My headcanon is that Dirk is tangentially involved in the same events in a parallel universe. Quite possibly a universe caused by the Doctor's version of events.
SHADDDDDDAAAAAAAA!!!! Thought I might as well make a reference to the VHS edition (which was re-released on DVD, which is how I saw it) before someone else did.
Can't wait to see this as it should've been! This is like a new missing episode recovery (sort of). Got my tickets booked for the BFI. Anyone else going? If so, see you there! :)
Wow, someone else is already saying "Don't forget to subscribe to the official Doctor Who UA-cam channel." even though we haven't had Peter Capaldi's last episode yet. Well, I certainly know what I'd like for Christmas.
This is a wonderful introduction! We should all be proud that the Douglas Adams’ “unfinished business” has now been finalised, after almost FOUR DECADES!! 😁
@@archive9796had to ask, if hopelessly considering it's 6 years on, but what brought about the hate through the comment section? it's definitely the best way to experience the story, providing the least intrusive presentation. much prefer it to basic flash animations with an out-of-place 8th doctor and story links in-between completed scenes
The thing about the new animation is though: How much of it is gonna be animated? I've never sat down and fully watched Shada (for the very reason that it was unfinished), so how much of it was filmed? Is it gonna be at a 50/50 filmed-animated ratio, or will it just be like 30-70 filmed animated?
Most of the missing studio material is in the final three episodes, with episodes 5 and 6 taking the biggest hit. Almost everything set on Earth exists. The scenes once they leave are what is missing.
I was here for SHADA... and everybody are commenting about the lack of capaldi Catchphrase on youtube. Guys administrating the doctor who youtube channel. I think that you need to sneak it´s replacement or bring back capaldi video until series 11 aired... we miss that capaldi outro
I'm curious as to who is doing the score, since you said it's been re-scored. I doubt that they got Dudley Simpson to give us one last hurrah (RIP), but a man can dream. As long as it isn't Keff McCullough, as his imitation of Simpson's style was atrocious.
waterfieldV Yeah, pretty much any of them would be a good choice. Now that you mention him, my bet is on Mark Ayres, since he's presumably doing the sound restoration and mixing anyway.
Didn't he once team up with the show's cast to create a very, *very* bad charity single to try and "save" the show when it was put on hiatus and mistaken for cancelled in 1985?
LOLOLOLOL I watched the complete story that included animation years ago. The guy that did the animation for it should have public ally released everything he did.
I like how Doctor 9, 10 and 11 all had catchphrases and then Capaldi comes along and all he gets is DON'T FORGET TO CLICK BELOW AND SUBSCRIBE TO THE OFFICIAL DOCTOR WHO UA-cam CHANNEL
Sorry, this bugs me... about 1:20 in: "1979 saw a winter of discontent...", and then proceeds to describe bad things. "Winter of Discontent" means that times are GOOD. In "winter", things die... "discontent" means bad feelings... so "the death of bad feelings". It's a Shakespearean double-negative. So, the phrase means that things are going good.
vriley2000 The strikes could be seen as a "death of bad feelings", as they improved things for the workers, so it's like the strikers bad feelings are dying, maybe.
Well, it says just after that, they were angry at a gov't pay cap on their wages. So, I see what you mean, but I don't think that's what they meant. After I posted it, I thought that they might mean it literally... that it was the winter season, and there was a lot of discontented people. They don't say specifically what the affected months were... but if you're quoting a Shakespearean metaphor like that, then you're presumably using it in a semi-similar context, at least.

If there is another reason to hate public sector unions. Shada would be a top 10 Tom Baker story and top 20 all time
dfarmbrough I saw Classic Doctor Who,then Tom Baker, then I thought about Colin Baker, then I thought about that he's my favourite from The Classics... And then I commented...
Боже почему я такая идиотка, до сих пор не выучила английский? Уеду жить в Лондон... Ну вот, про "не забудь подписаться" говорит уже не Питер Капальди(((
They were using the production as a method to convince Tom to come to Big Finish, and ultimately he refused. It was a relatively late last minute change.
I still don't understand why we haven't seen Romana back on the show? She is clearly still in the 'orbit' of Dr. Who. Just put her in front of a camera and lets write her story. Dr Who really missed a huge opportunity: Why make the Doctor female when you already have a female time lady everyone wants to know what happened to? This next season could have been all about Romana's journey to find the Doctor through all of space and time. Could have given the Doctor's character a year to rest.
I still have my fingers crossed that the 13th Doctor will come across "Romana III" and they'll spend an episode trying to figure out who the other person is, since neither of them recognizes the newest regeneration. And after they realize they already know each other, they'll travel together for at least one season.
It's been televised, novelised, animated, adapted for audio and now reconstructed... is it really so brilliant it needs this many versions? Or should we be focusing time/money on new stuff instead?
Well, we did also get a dozen new episodes of Doctor Who this year. And that's not even getting into all the novels, comics, and audio plays that come out all the time.
We're talking about the version like it was thought in the original way. Like the author wanted it to be. A book, an audio and all the stuff you want cannot replace the original media like it was thought... It's still the last time Tom Baker and the others can recorded themselves for the audio. And since the succes of Power of the Daleks, the BBC wants to make reconstruction gainful. So, Shada was the best choice for a start. They took such an enormous risk with Power of the Daleks.
What baffles me the most about Shada's production is the reason for the strike that killed it: it was apparently over which union owned the rights to operate a complex clock prop used for a different children's show called Play School.
To reiterate, the reason Shada was never completed was because of *A GODDAMN CLOCK.*
Fitting for a show about time....
The clock from Play School? That's why it wasn't completed? Why would they be so concerned over who got to use the clock?
You know...it's kinda funny for a Douglas Adams episode to be canned for this reason XD
I know the original comment is years old now, but I've never actually seen any evidence of this being the origins, does anyone have any?

Don't forget that Adams eventually re-used many concepts from this episode in Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency.
Jeff Slane Not to mention The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy
My headcanon is that Dirk is tangentially involved in the same events in a parallel universe. Quite possibly a universe caused by the Doctor's version of events.
I was expecting Peter Capaldi at the end telling us to subscribe like usual...
Why does nobody ever mention that Adams used the basic plot of Shada for his first Dirk Gently's Detective Agency novel?
Source? If there's no source then it's not worth mentioning.
The source is probably the novel itself haha
What a fantastic advert
Wow, someone else is already saying "Don't forget to subscribe to the official Doctor Who UA-cam channel." even though we haven't had Peter Capaldi's last episode yet.
Well, I certainly know what I'd like for Christmas.
"And don't forget to subscribe to the official Doctor Who You Tube channel"
The sentence that will never be forgotten..
Great video! 1 problem, that's the wrong Dalek at 0:31. It's an action figure for Remembrance Of The Daleks from Sylvester's era.
*1:09* In the...real world? What's that like then?
I have the three-disc set. And it's good. Tom and Lalla went in and shot a new ending for it to bring it full circle.
This is a wonderful introduction! We should all be proud that the Douglas Adams’ “unfinished business” has now been finalised, after almost FOUR DECADES!! 😁
Andrew Hsieh why are you lying ?
It’s already been completed 3 times
@@archive9796had to ask, if hopelessly considering it's 6 years on, but what brought about the hate through the comment section? it's definitely the best way to experience the story, providing the least intrusive presentation. much prefer it to basic flash animations with an out-of-place 8th doctor and story links in-between completed scenes
Way better than the DIY videos.
I can't wait for Shada!
IB Productions well you don’t need to as there’s two different visual versions
They should add in a new scene where the doctor changes into his season 18 outfit, it would be great
I'm surprised that the channel doesn't have Over 1 million subs
I feel like the only one who's looking forward to Shada.
No but I am also
I love Shada so much that I have Douglas Adams's original script!
I have not seen or heard any of it except the part in "The Five Doctors". I can watch it and possibly be surprised.
And now we finally have it
I went back to yesterday to find this to watch today so I can remember to remind myself to do that tomorrow.
This is amazing for fans who have wanted to see this done for many years now!
MidnightBanshi lies
No one wanted another Shada
There’s already 3 visual versions
ITM 31 This one looks to be better though!
This is nice an all... but the link only states the release date in the UK. Any word when/if these will be released in the US?
Will it be shown on on BBC America or only going straight to video?
Thank you.
ITV didn't go "on strike" for several months but several weeks
I've seen it and that was LIT
Sounds a little bit of a vampire story but all Alien you know...
The steelbook looks amazing. 😎
Quite alot was filmed, most of it being the earlier parts of the story, like the visit to Chronotis (did I spell his name right?).
Maybe like one episodes worth
Go watch Shada most of it was finished
Most of the missing studio material is in the final three episodes, with episodes 5 and 6 taking the biggest hit. Almost everything set on Earth exists. The scenes once they leave are what is missing.

I was making a doctorwho garageband and this yay!

Yeah, pretty much any of them would be a good choice. Now that you mention him, my bet is on Mark Ayres, since he's presumably doing the sound restoration and mixing anyway.
I'm looking forward to getting my hands on more Tom Baker
But you aren’t going to get more since Shada is already on dvd
If you want more Tom Baker go to big Finish
ITM 31 It's still more Baker either way. And I've got nothing to listen to Big Finish anyway
they didn't mention Ian Levine's version of shada
Of course, that wasn't official, unlike all the things they listed.
Plus, Ian Levine is annoying. Sorry, I just don't like the guy. He seems the kind of type who wants to prove himself better than anyone else.
Didn't he once team up with the show's cast to create a very, *very* bad charity single to try and "save" the show when it was put on hiatus and mistaken for cancelled in 1985?
Doctor in Distress!
He did, but Colin Baker regrets doing that.
I'm still waiting for the feast of steven
I will be Perching this on day one. I always thought the guy in fancy dress was a little much. The hat is over the top.
LOLOLOLOL I watched the complete story that included animation years ago. The guy that did the animation for it should have public ally released everything he did.
Why? that person has been a public menace for many years flinging abuse at multiple people from within the BBC.
3:03 except Dennis Carey, since he's dead.
43K MORE SUBS TILL 1 MILLION WE CAN DO IT!
Rip Peter Capaldi's "Don't forget to subscribe to the official Doctor Who UA-cam channel."
No whyyyyy why you had to say " Don't forget to subscribe to the official DW UA-cam channel " whhy no one can do it except Peter Capaldi !!!!!!!!!!!!
This will be a good one!
Will the missing parts be filled according to the book? Or yet another version of it?
The original script - how it was originally intended.
No entiendo mucho ingles,pero
Me gustria que lo subtitulen
Doctor who,ya que tiene muchos fans que hablan español
What
WHAT
I have the original version of Shada on DVD
H Bombs same
Most Who fans should
Do they have plans to air this?
LOVE Shada!!!
Is there a US release being talked about?
It's coming out in January.
WHERE'S CAPALDI'S SUBSCRIPTION LINE???
Why leave out any mention of the fact that Douglas Adams reused some Shada ideas for the first Dirk Gently novel and didn't want Shada novelized?
who's this guy stealing 12's catchphrase
I like how Doctor 9, 10 and 11 all had catchphrases and then Capaldi comes along and all he gets is DON'T FORGET TO CLICK BELOW AND SUBSCRIBE TO THE OFFICIAL DOCTOR WHO UA-cam CHANNEL
Sometimes it's better for a catchphrase to come naturally than to be forced. Also didn't he have "shut up" as a catchphrase for a while?
Yes I thought of that, but does anyone really accept that as a catchphrase?
I guess the people that love him as Malcolm Tucker, mostly.
Vittorio Sforza ikr
Clara do not deserved to die... I like her...
Me encanta doctor who
Missing those old intros

Where is Peter Capaldi and who's this guy stealing 12's catchphrase ?
Doctor who is real history.
Also.
K-9 is nice ;) ♥
Am I the only one who would like to see more of Colin Baker?
The Doctor What's that got to do with it?
YES, and he needs to start eating healthier if he wants to live longer. After all, it's not like he is going to regenerate.
dfarmbrough I saw Classic Doctor Who,then Tom Baker, then I thought about Colin Baker, then I thought about that he's my favourite from The Classics... And then I commented...
that doctor was TOM BAKER not collin LOL
Stephanie Reacts I know that, but when I See Classic Who I first think about Colin Baker... I was never saying anything about Tom
Why cant I find the rest of the tenant episodes in canada.
You aren't looking? 🤔
Cause you're bad at using google to search? Cmon.. if a 6year old can google , you can do it.
Fuzzycat Preach it
I love you
So many people are idiots
I got the book.
Should have been shifted to season 18 instead of the dreadful the leisure hive
Where's Peter, where is he?!
Public sector workers striking again
The Doctor must wait 1979 years to finish this story.
Leguś no the Doctor already finished this story both as 4 and 8
I mean to someone fully write that (except that animated version)
I 💚 BBC
So tell me something I don't know already.
Its a British show so technically shows are recorded as series not seasons.
Season for classic who. Series for new who
matt is the best
Yeah, no mention of Ian Levine. Isn't that nice?
Боже почему я такая идиотка, до сих пор не выучила английский? Уеду жить в Лондон... Ну вот, про "не забудь подписаться" говорит уже не Питер Капальди(((
Why did they think the 8th doctor would make sense to put in this story, lol.
They were using the production as a method to convince Tom to come to Big Finish, and ultimately he refused. It was a relatively late last minute change.
Neil Gaimon would do it justice.
lol, 3:14.
I get jokes.
i know that voice
1:09, Wowowow Your Going To Fast, Stop There, Explain The Real World...
Given the money Doctor Who brings in for the BBC, you really would think they'd spring for better animation.
Gary Jones you can say that again
Ive thought the same, pretty sure most anime's work on a much lower budget and have much higher production quality

Hey! dont tell me to subscribe that Peter capldis job
It's been televised, novelised, animated, adapted for audio and now reconstructed... is it really so brilliant it needs this many versions? Or should we be focusing time/money on new stuff instead?
@Angelus: I think it's at least partly because it's Douglas Adams.

Nothing will ever top Lalla Ward's audiobook version. But maybe I'll be surprised...!
why does anyone do anything? because there is a market for it... money to be made...demand for it...etc etc etc

Fans want missing Hartnell&Trougten stories but NO cous new Who fans won’t buy them
I think a lot of people want this, plus, you can’t get mad at new Who fans for not liking classic who.
