Sohyang is a great singer and a cancer survivor. She is a strong person and she doesn't sing for money but to help people who wish to build up their dream like her. She doesn't want to do a lot of singing due to health issues and she only do it selectively. Appreciate her doing good deeds.

This is the first song that I got to know the singer Sohyang for the first time. I couldn't stop shedding my tears while listening to this song. Because I thought of my mother who passed away after suffering from incurable disease for a long time. How nice would it be if she heard this song? I really miss my mother. Sohyang is a great artist who comforts me through this song and gives me hope and courage in my life.

So Hyang is best singing live to an audience that she can speak to personally .. this is from Immortal Songs 2 the show is a competition where Artists rearrange/compose classic songs of the past (mostly Korean and sometimes Western) She has several songs from this show also I am a Singer (also competition) and King of Masked Singer (Originnaly it's a Korean Show America bought rights to their version though I think it sucks as have several other countries) her newest live songs are from a recent appearance on the show Begin again and though it is a live format you could call it So Hyang lite because the format wasn't a competition more of a collaboration with other artists to give comfort during Covid ...

Just a quick note on the show Begin Again. The show's concept is established artists going to a foreign land and performing in front of strangers (busking). It sort of transport them back to their humble beginning -- hence the title Begin Again. It's a pretty cool concept. Due to covid pandemic, they were not able to travel to a foreign country this season. Hopefully when they're able to resume their normal filming, they can have Sohyang back on the show.

Sohyang have performed this song (the "Josh Groban" version) quite often over the years. This particular arrangement was for a TV show where creating your own version is much encouraged. This version is also much more closer to the original by the Norwegian-Irish duo Secret Garden.

Thanks for an honest and thoughful reaction. The man is Sean Filan the lead singer of group Westlife which popularized the song in UK and Ireland some years back. She did sing with Josh Groban in Korea last year - they did songs like "The Prayer" - but there are only fan-cams of parts of the performance.
She fits her voice depending to the material so can sound quite different singing a sad ballad or gospel or rock or jazz (Misty) or rap (Day Day)

I'm so Happy to see lots of people are saying the real truth about her, no need for me to comment about any information, I hope So Hyang herself sees this kind of things, how much she is loved and appreciated, all of this from, just her singing songs, she has Zero marketing/Advertising. And most of us fans are so far away from her country, doesn't speak her language, still loves her so much.. there's no one like her in this world, so unique, you can get close to her in terms of a vocalist's technical abilities, but never to her way of emoting/expressing emotions, you can feel it even when you don't normally like the type of song, good example is this song (for me), she made me feel like this is the first time actually heard the lyrics and understand what's this about..

And in 22.Jul This year, I went to see her begin again korea ep 9. Her mocrophone volume was reduced. I watched it there in live. She was sooooooo tiny and skinny!(150~155cm ish..and 40~43kg?)
But her volume was huuuuuuuge!!! She was requested reduced volume it and staffs and producers want to volume balanced with other singers.
Her rendition of Misty was OUT OF THIS WORLD!!!!!!

Sohyang is one of the best female singers in the world at the moment. Many USA music companies wanted a contract with her but she has denied it because she does not want to be slaved under capitalism.
I do not blame her! Plus she doesn't need American companies to change her, she is amazing the way she is!

Firstly she was ill during this performance & the doc advised her not.to sing as she hadn't recovered from a bout of pneumonia but she didn't want to let down the audience. This is marker to just how good so hyang is in that although this performance is amazing by anybody else's standards, judging it by sohyang standards,its not one of her best. I know these things are a matter of opinion & I love everything that she does but the truth is it doesn't even get in to my top ten(maybe even top 15 after some recent live performances released) of live sohyang performances, there was something missing which if you go on to react to more sohyang you may even be able to see yourself. 99% of performances you will find on youtube will be live performances,it is almost unheard of for her to do a music video,the 'never enough' video was a rarity. So hyang herself is a master arranger & does the arrangments for all the songs she performs.sometimes there are big changes to a song & sometimes very discreet changes,depending on whats required at any particular time, but her changes always enhance the song & make it better,i've never heard anyone say that her changes have been detrimental to the song. She is a gospel singer at heart but she can sing any genre & there are video's available to prove this (pop,rock,jazz,blues,gospel obviously,& of course the ballads & how can I forget her rapping!!!) As for this 'morisette' thing,its been a problem since they both came to prominence & I just dont get it. It seems like most ot the negativity about sohyang comes from filipino's (I must state not all filipino's as there are many filipino youtubers that love sohyang). I think its like a blind loyalty for one of their own,which to a point I can understand,there's nothing wrong with been loyal, but when it goes to length of actually questioning so hyangs vocal abilities & dissing them its just ludicrous. I love morisette & sohyang & dont understand this 'either/or' stance,there is more than enough room for them both. They are both right up there at the top when it comes to female vocalists in the world today, but in my opinion & my opinion only, so hyang is the better singer both technically & with regards to emotion & telling a story. I would very much doubt it if amongst these 'reactors' you would find a vocal coach/musician/or anyone in the music industry having this attitude,yes the may prefer morissette,but they would not choose ignore the fact that sohyangs vocals incredible too. Also it doesn't seem to happen the other way around,or I haven' t seen it anyway, that you find Korean's & other sohyang fans ignorantly criticising morissette's vocals just for the sake of been loyal. I wonder how many of those 'sohyang haters' have actually taken the time to actually watch sohyang video's!!!!

Nice to see you return to visit Sohyang again. This rearranged "You Raise Me Up" in 2018 is a masterpiece. Sohyang mentioned that this performance represents her personal story. As you are aware that she is a devout Christian, it's probably not too far-fetched to theorize that this song is about Sohyang's spiritual journey with her Creator. You can sense that the song starts up with a person in doubt seeking private guidance. The reach-out for advice was rewarded with joy and gratitude as the song progressed. As the song moves towards its conclusion, it simply blossomed into waves of full-throated praises that show her faith and conviction.
As other comments already pointed out, the gentleman in the video was Shane Filan of the Irish boyband, Westlife, which also had "You Raise Me Up" as a him in Great Britain. Sohyang, along with a number of other artists, was invited to this show "Shane Filan Special" of the Korean show "Immortal Songs 2" where established artists come to reinterpret classic hits with their own spin.
By the way, the flute you mentioned early is probably known as Irish whistle. Its sound has such a sentimental and charming effect, and I suspect its inclusion may reflect homage to Celtic music here.

So Hyang takes a song and most times completely rearranges them. This is the only time she sang this arrangement for the contest Immortal Songs. She was recovering from pneumonia here as people have mentioned. As a cancer survivor, she has a lower immune system and is prone to pneumonia.
KBS does do some post-production editing, but honestly, she doesn't need it, many people prefer the unedited versions of her songs when they can get their hands on them.
You haven't heard of her because she is an independent artist, she has been asked and turned down large record labels. She sings for God and to comfort people.
Never Again video was from the show Begin Again Korea, pretty sure they played more of a role in that video than what she normally does. It was actually for the athletes of the virtual Olympics.

I liked how she altered one of the regular stanzas by turning it into a sort of bridge. It is the part that starts with "There's no life without its hunger". This song can start sounding redundant after a while, but by doing this sort of thing, she keeps audience interest.

This song is best known by Josh Groban and Westlife (the guy you see on this video is the lead singer of Westlife). So Hyang dissected and deconstructed the whole song and created this truly moving, an epic gospel piece. To imagine such a radical rearrangement tells you the level of musical creativity So Hyang possesses, and to sing it so perfectly like this? Not many can claim they could do the same, if any.

At first, years ago, she only sang gospel music. She spoke with a pastor whose opinion was: Bringing comfort and peace to hearts in need is a blessed work, regardless of whether the music itself is gospel or not. After this, she began to sing secular songs in public, so that her voice can comfort the hearts of all of God's children, regardless of religious boundaries. This is why, even in her secular covers, you can still feel God-she is singing for Him, and to comfort and help His children.

Actually it is Shane Filan from Westlife they did a more popular cover of Josh Grobans original. He even said though its his favorite to sing her version was now his favorite. So Hyang was suffering from Pneumonia in this performance the doctors told her not even to speak much more sing the day before but she followed through with her commitment .. many Filipinos love to Hate So Hyang over Filipino singers which is sad because they make their People look bad doing it.

Don't worry, Many filipinos really loves SoHyang while some others loves her bit differently, but those people listen to SoHyang so much more than me and comments on every video, more views more engagement, 😎 they spread SoHyang's name so much more than us, many people getting to know SoHyang from those who compares her with others singers in a bad way, many people then start Loving SoHyang and never looking back.. number of those bad/crazy fans are decreasing very fast, back then it was so bad and annoying that I completely stopped listening to any singers from Philippians, because i don't want to support those artists with crazy fans even one bit. there's many things i love so i focused on them...

I agree. So Hyang is such a kind person and it's sad to hear these negative comments about her. Luckily many Filipinos love her. I see them everywhere. They know how to enjoy all music not just the Filipino singers.
Just alittle more context about Sohyang. She has devoted her life to Christ since 18, I believe. She is a CCM (Contemporary Christian Ministry) singer since then. She usually does a bit of prayer and worship between her songs in church and also as a fellow Christian and her journey with Christ. She is not just an ordinary devout Christian like many of us.
When she was young, her ambition was never to be a singer. Her ambition was to be a cartoonist.
Currently, Sohyang spent most of her time not singing, but writing fantasy novels. She is a prolific writer and has published a few volumes of her fantasy novels.
Just an incredible God fearing woman.
