The lotus 11 was first produced in 1956. The design based on simplicity and lightness, this was the basis of DNA learnt by the late Colin Chapman during former years of Lotus designs.
This car was way ahead of its time both in design & lightness, the Coventry Climax engine able to deliver power at almost double the RPM of many contemporary sports cars, emitting a shrill Scream - set this Lotus well apart & firmly on a course to be the competitive and so collectable historic racing car it is today.
The Lotus 11 was produced in 4 variants arguably the most desirable of all the Lotus 11 ” Le Mans ”
The car offered here for sale is possibly one of the most desirable such cars to come to the market for many years & a car with outstanding Provenance.
The owner for the last 40 years being Victor Thomas, the founder of the HLR & indeed a renowned expert on this marque, author of the book “Technical articles, written in the HLR newsletter -1975 -2014”.
1959 lotus Eleven series 2- Le Mans - wobbly web.
Chassis number MK11550, Registration No. 31 VVW, engine number FWB 12772.
The car is believed to be one of 3 cars delivered to the De Havilland aircraft company, for experimentation by Frank Costin, the aerodynamicist who was involved with the design of the early Lotus Cars.
Road registration of Chassis 550 did not take place until 1961 with the next owner, this was normal for a competition car at this time.
The lotus chassis plate on the car indicates the original engine number.
The car was raced during 1959, a colour photograph shows the car in light blue. this colour was retained during the restoration.
Whilst the racing history is not yet fully researched, photos of Brian Harvey driving the car at Oulton Park. This car is known to have done long distance events, with a long range fuel tank, previously fitted & four rear lamps which are retained today.
The car also competed in the British formula 1300cc driven by
Geof Mansel and also in British Modsports with Graham Matheson up to 1973.
Evidence of a small bonnet bulge can be traced to the car being involved in the British 1172cc formula of the 750 motor club at one stage.
The history file for this car is out-standing, the first registered owner is listed at DVLA (the UK road registration authority) together with 5 subsequent owners. During the cars race history many modifications were done to make the car faster, fortunately the last owner retained all of the original parts such that during the restoration the car could be rebuilt to period correct specification with original parts
The car is offered for sale with original wheels plus the Aluminium Williams & Pritchard body
The car was restored under the supervision of the Historic Lotus Registry & as such is one of the very best examples in the world.
Paintwork & body work are tired, showing clearly the passing of time, this Lotus 11 will be the subject of a full re spray to a very high standard prior to delivery to a lucky new owner!
Here at Premium Classic Cars a full mechanical re- commissioning to include engine detail will be done - such that this wonderful car can sit proudly in any Paddock, attending the world’s most prestigious historic motorsport events, this car is quite surely going to be very welcome at Goodwood, Classic Le Mans to name but just two!
The history file is extensive & a credit to the former owner’s diligent attention to history.
A schedule of key parts refurbished and replaced during the restoration plus of course, Historic Technical Passport, prior MOTs & some wonderful photos of the car on Circuit both in the 60s & later all comprise to complete a car clearly Blue Chip as an investment grade historic race car - able to be seriously competitive in the present Motorsport era.

Прикольная тачка. Один из самых удачных "Лотусов". Аэродинамически эффективная, обтекаемая машина.

@@DavidSmith-qg9ho The car was likely bought as a kit and finished and registered in 1959
