Most of the swedes goes to south east asia during the winter. So there's your solution on how to not have to spend the winter months here when "the winter is coming". And also, if you live in Norrköping. Take a final trip to Kolmården then leave that place for good. Greetings from the capital of Scandinavia.
What is proper pretty much depends on who you ask, and doing a "klämma" doesn't really taste much of surströmming. But since he's a newbie it would probably be a good way to start, but if that works he should taste the fish as is. Personally I eat it with only potato and tunnbröd on the side.
You will always hate the Swedish winter unless you go north and experience a real winter. I mean glimmering, glistering white snow, where a crunching sound is made when you walk on such snow (for example on a cleared path, where there is still a thin layer of snow). A place where you can do some serious skiing (be it cross-country with mountains as a back-drop, or down-hill). You can also do dog-sleighing, or even be pulled by reindeers -- or drive a snow mobile. People in the south of Sweden (Svealand and Götaland) typically have quite miserable winters (rain, slush, on and off with snow -- if any snow). Since many years, I now live in Stockholm, but I miss the real winters of the north.
Judging from the comments here one can easily get the impression that every Swede is crazy about surströmming. Fortunately, that's not the case; many dislike it or haven't even tried it. You can live a perfect and happy life without it. I will soon turn 58 and have not been near a can of surströmming yet. Anyhow, if you decide to try it and get a chance to, please do it together with people who know how to do it. Inlagd sill also takes some time to get used to and same goes for salt sill, but there are so many other things you can try instead - and, may I add, probably also enjoy the taste of. Please keep up the good work with your videos.

Detta är skiitförhållanden för järnvägen då den rostar sönder gång på gång på gång av de hårda saltvindarna från havet.
I love watching your videos Stefan, they make me feel so good about being swedish! I think its normal for alot of us swedes to forget how great our country really is, and people like you remind us of that. Thank you for that
You should definitely visit Northern Sweden during winter! It is so so SO much more pleasant than what you get down where you live. Winters up here are fantastic - they are bright (go out on a night during full moon - it's crazy), they are clean, the dry air makes it easier to dress right and stay warm even when it's really cold. When I used to live in Skåne, I was always so damn cold during winters, it was horrid really. Up here though? -20 degrees, that's no problem! Then we got this thing called Aurora Borealis which will blow you away. The impression that have on you when you are standing in the middle of nowhere, no light pollution and a clear sky with thousands of stars looking down on you isn't something you can describe with words. You feels so incredibly tiny and the vastness of the universe really hits you like a punch in the chest.
Agreed. I get so annoyed when people try Swedish food in an incorrect way - no wonder they think it's weird and not so good. I saw a girl eating lingonsylt on skorpor ....
Em Well, if he is going to do it the "right" way, he shouldn't have sour cream... It takes away the taste of the fish, it's a Stockholm/Göteborg(wrong) way of eating it.
Yeah go for Dual citizenship 🇸🇪🇺🇸🤗 I would be proud to call you my fellow swede. Do you have American friends in Sweden who have made the same journey as you?
Eat surströmming the right way - actually there are like 3 diffrent major ways to eat surströmming depending on where in Sweden you live so I would try it in tunnbröd, with almond potatoes , the modern way with a choppers tomatoes as well of course heresy!!! with red Onion, Chives or yellow union and gräddfil and people also add melted butter to the potatoes so make it a surströmming tasting and invite some people over Ps if you like matjessill use that as a backup if you guys decide you dont like it because that works so well with all the rest oh and also check the newspappers to get the best surströmming brands - its pretty much a cultural heritage thing and Done right I really like it but eat it outside and see to it to rinse the fish before serving and find someone who known how to handle the fish to the party ;)
I'm so happy you love to live in Sweden. 😍 This is so interesting channel cause I love Sweden too but live in Finland. You should visit here too! I laughed when you answered the question pineapple to pizza. Finnish people always ask the same question from foreiners who lives in Finland. 😂😂😂 Keep doing your videos. I will watch. 👍
Watching you talk about traveling the world I couldn’t help thinking: then go NOW! Right now you have very few responsibilities and no girlfriend holding you in Sweden. Things can change so fast in the time it takes to get citizenship and suddenly what seems like no problem to leave will be impossible. So go go go! See the world, travel, experience, do and then come back. I know I am going to sound really old, but time flies by so fast and if you pause, you might miss the opportunity to be free. I just wanted to get some work experience before I traveled the world and then I just wanted to make sure I had enough money and suddenly I had a house and kids and now I only go on summer holidays and a tiny bit of work travel. So I only saw the US and a few capitals in Europe and the rest of the world has to wait till the kids get older. I’ll say it one last time: Go go go!
If you decide do make a road trip this summer, your should spend a few days here in Kalmar! You’re welcome to stay here. It’s not a big city but It’s been voted the best summer city for several years. Also it takes 20 minutes to go to Öland, which I know you want to see.
If you ever want to visit a small town you should totally visit Sala! There’s an old sliver mine there that you could visit where you can go almost 200 meters under the ground. The town center is quite old school and is based on Brooklyn! There is also a HUGE park! Then you could travel to Uppsala. Which is the third largest city in Sweden.
Hey, it’s the first time I comment on one of your videos and I’m really happy to see where you ‘re going with your channel. I followed your channel because I wanted to discover Sweden before coming there for my Erasmus half year. Now that I am in Sweden I can say that your videos helped me a lot ;) Thank you for that. PS : I’ve already eaten Surströmming ahah and I thought it was not that bad except that I had the taste of it for 3 days ahah. Tack så mycket
I've been living my whole life in Canada, I spent 4 months in Uppsala and 2 in the Philippines (Manila and a northern village). The Philippines are so different, it's amazing. I think it's a trip to make if you want to experience something out of your comfort zone :) Though, I'd do anything to go back to Sweden. Completely fell in love with the country
Hey there, where are you in Canada? I reside in Uppsala and would love to have somewhat of a prolonged stay in Canada somewhere in the near future. Shouldn't be so difficult to just switch places straight up ;)
I love Canada and I love Sweden ! The cultures are similar, but also very different :) I'm from the french part of Canada -it's called Quebec. The vibe is really different. However, I loved Sweden so much. I wouldn't say one is better than the other, it just depend of what you want.
I'm from Montreal but I'm currently living in Ottawa for my master's ! I would love to switch places if it was easy to do hahaha. I just love your city (an your country). You are so lucky to be there... ! I would suggest going to Canada, though. It's awesome here as well :p
i did try to immigrate to canada by quebec system for immigration but i couldnot collect much point ... i just need to know if i have to study harder french language or it is better to move directly to sweden ... if i go to sweden i will live in malmo ... i wanted to know which country is better for making money also ?
I know that we swedes eat Surströmming in a lot of different ways. I eat on a plate with potatoes, onions, sour cream & a “tunnbröd” with “messmör” on. :) so you have to discover the way you like it. Or if you don’t like it it’s okay too. It is a very unique taste.
Surströmming is something to get used to, the smell make our instinct to reject it. But the smell is fading and you get used to it in 10 minutes. Also even though the smell is similar to a bad fart it is still easy to spot as surströmming. I can promise that if you eat it 5 times, your mouth is going to be watering from the smell. It's really good to eat "the correct way" (thin bread, potatoes, tomatoes, onion and creme fraishe). Also don't forget to have some "nubbar" together with it. A good "nubbe" like Skåne aquavit and Norrlands really makes it together with raw fish dishes, like sill and surströmming.
Yeah that seems to be the best way of handling it, if you want to stay here for a greater amount of time that is, making sure to get a healthy break from the swedish winters. Personally I love the coziness of fall and christmas time, January and February on the other hand, couldn't dislike them more!
Regarding Amazon. Sweden is a EU-country, and most EU-countries do ship to other EU-countries. For instance amazon.se redirects you do amazon.de (germany) with a swedish slant (up until uk leaves then amazon.co.uk (amazon.ie points to that as well) is worth keeping in mind). All of the german-speaking countries are so used to shipping abroad that most of them also include the rest of EU out of pure habit (so if you speak german then those countries are a goldmine for finding good stuff).
The "traveling with a follower" suggestion sounds really awesome. Also, an idea from me is if you would maybe speak with your boss and students to film a "day with the class" or something. The interactions would be fun to see, especially for the people that aren't from this beautiful country!
I agree that would be cool and I would love to do that, but I would have to get release forms for every student who appears in the video. Would be a challenge to get it all cleared and the students have other important things to focus on 🙈
If you don’t like the winter where you are rn but still really like prolympia, Sundsvall is maybe a city you’ll like! They have a really good winter and they do have prolympia there as well. I think you could get a job on that school pretty easily.
Thanks, i like your videos, i'm Swedish but i live in Ireland since 2004, so i recognize some of the issues from living over here and i'm trying to teach my now husband Swedish and i also showed him your clip " why do i need to speak Swedish ". i will show him more of your videos..... because they are very good and it gives him an idea of if and when we will move to Sweden. So thanks for your videos they even make me think about things that i haven't really thought about.
I shared an apartment with a indian guest scientist in Linköping for quite a while ago, He thought Linköping was a village. And if you test surströmming make it the 'right' way and open under water, or go to Ulvvön there is a restaurant there that serves surströmming.
I am very interested to hear how you met all of your Swedish friends? I moved here about 15 years ago when I was 35 years old. I started my photography business and got a lot customers but after all these years I have one good friend that I can call. I was born in Sweden but have lived in Ca. for 22 years. My Swedish is good. This is the only bad thing for me by moving here. I just don’t get it? I stopped calling some “friends” in January 2017 to see if they would call me. I’m still waiting 🤣. What’s up with these Swedes? So, I’m just a bit curious if people want to hang out with you or do you have to contact them? I have lived in Borås the whole time. I can’t imagine if it’s only in Borås that this is happening in. Maybe Norrköping is different?
one day you want to visit Indonesia, just let me know and you’ll know how much different the culture. I wonder how big my preparation to move to my husband in Sweden. I don’t use to the cold at all...
You should go to Gotland in week 32, that's when the medieval week is in Visby. Medieval reenactments in a magical and one of the most beautiful places in Sweden in my opinion ☺
Have you been to Visby? It's really cool. You should go there in the summer. It's an little town from the 1300s with buildings from the same time and an really big town wall. The hole city is classified as an world heritage because of the history
Surströmming has such a stong smell, it would be impossible to eat it straight from the can. I actually enjoyed surströmming when I ate it. But the most enjoyable thing of the experience was preparing the traditional dish. You prepare it as you eat it and it is a sociable activity. You definitely need to try it! :)
You should try surströmming with potatoes and union rolled in a bread (don't forget to clean the fish before you eat it) And open the can under water! :)
for everything holy when you are gonna eat surströmming open outside and take the strömming in a bowl and leave the can outside and keep windows closed becuase there will come around 400 to 600 flys and this helps keeping them away from you and the area when eating.and there is only one true way of eating it that is potatoes, surströmming, snaps and alot of friends that way it may taste like hell but you will still have fun
Regarding Surströmming. Do the thing never before done (me just guessing here). Try both. One video of you alone, opening a can, eating it from the can. trying not to puke. One video of you joining a surströmmingsfest with some experienced people (that let you film it), have them show you how to do it, enjoy the entire experience. One video after these two, where you talk about how different the experiences were.

Eat the surströmming like people eat it. I haven't eaten it as far as I know most likely because I've been vegan for 20 years and vegetarian for 30 but it's not like people eat stuff like caper, catchup, vinegar, cinnamon, ground pepper and all that stuff of it's own normally.
You probably haven't eaten a good herring (sill). Sill is really good if prepared and served correctly. I personally love a bit marinated herring with hot potatoes, tomatoes, creme fraische and a bit of onion.
Come to Gothenburg! Just pick a day with good weather, haha. Let me know if you need any advice about the city (or want to have a fika). I've been living here for about 9 years now.
if you don’t like the winter you can travel to Skåne in south there are not so cold at winter and it is a big city who could Malmö whithe 300 000 pepole
Stefan the taste is good if you use potato raw onion and " soft tunnbröd' and a beer or snaps to the formatted haring, "surströmming". and I live in the north of Thailand and I never go back to Sweden.
Eat it the right way! (Surströmming is delicous and it's annoying when every youtuber is eating it wrong. So please show an example of the correct way to eat it!)
Why not do both for the surströmming? You could try it first the right way and then later try it by itself, or the other way round (though maybe film and combine two different videos with at least an hour in between so that the taste of it by itself doesn't ruin the taste of the proper way).
Just happened to stumble upon your videos, and you just seem like a cool guy. I also live in Norrköping, and the city has a special place in my heart, partially since I'm the guy who practically single-handedly maintained all the traffic lights in the city for the last few years (amongst other things, don't hate me). I find it very interesting talking to foreign people in general, and about language and culture in particular. Aslo, come to think of it... this will be really random, but you didn't happen to be shopping at coop extra in the Smedby area earlier this week? Probably wasn't you, but I saw two guys talking english and swedish with each other (it's not that common).
Am from Gotland and it's amazing. I think you should reach out to one of the schools on Gotland and have some sort of talk. Maybe about the US and differences etc. They would benefit massively from that and I think they would jump at the chance!
Even if you try surströmming the correct way, the disgusting taste of surströmming Will overtake everything.. im 26 and tried it 5 Times, its the Only food that makes me almost throwing up. Tip: try the 'Desirébulle' next time you have a fika
You HAVE to go to Gothenburg, Stefan! It's an amazing city! I fell in love with this city since May 2017 and this upcoming November I will be visiting Gothenburg for the... 6TH time!
Hi, I think you should eat the correct way and after try the other way you mentioned Voting hmm for me(next val) it would be direktdemokraterna They want more or less the system in switzerland
Thinking about moving back to Sweden after 16 whole years of living in England and Germany. Also considering starting a VLOG type youtube channel for that :)
Yeah, about that Swedish winter... You hava a good plan going there, the only way to cope with it is to either learn how to live with it or move south, because you never get used to it. I'm born and live in Skåne and this isn't south enough sorry. I'm not used to it after almost 30 years hehe. Good luck :)
Hopefully not a dumb question: I’m 53 .. do you think I’m too old to change my life and move there? You’re young and can do it.. my kids are grown so I really don’t need to stay and I’m not married so I really don’t have anything keeping me here . Besides the weather ( its 97 degrees here today in Las Vegas) it sounds like everything else is so much better in Sweden!
I have watched several videos about Sweden. It's a nice place, but it seems like a lot of sitting around in the dark winters, and people being snobbish to one another. Do people in Sweden do anything for fun ?
i would say do it the right way first than see if you dare doing it the other way. the right way it doesnt taste much more than a salty fish, and plz open the goddamn can the right way in a bucket with water let the bubbles come out and when they do you can take the can up and start doing it the right way, best way if you want to skip the smell is get someone that knows how to, to do it for you :D
Hi Stefan. Don’t mean to be rude. These videos are somewhat old (3 years old, I’m sorry for your breakup). What has been happening recently? I’d love to live in Stockholm during the summer. I’ve been looking for a job in Stockholm to make it easier to move there but the pandemic is making everything a lot more difficult.
Id say you should eat surströmming the proper way. It's fun to see the reaction of people when they open the can, sure. But it's gotten kinda annoying that so few actually then try to give it a chance and eat it as it should be eaten. We Sweds don't really eat it straight out of the can. So why should anyone?
If you do decide to try surströmming, you have to do it proper i.e not straight out of the can. Do it right or don’t do it at all.
Yea or first doing it the right way and then from the can I he just wants a reaction.
@Tobbe Häggberg om man gör det rätt är det inte mer än en salt strömming.

Well, there are some hard core surstömming eaters who claim that eating it straight out of the can is the proper way.

I haven't eat surströmming. And I 110% from Sweden XD
You should do a video when you try to guess different swedish slang words :)) Also great video!!
Kajsa Lindström jaa det skulle vart så kul!
That’s a really great idea, I definitely should :)

Do the thing where you open the can non-submerged like a dummy for the reaction of the smell, but for the actual eating, do it "correctly".
Probably a good way to go, get the full smell but eat it I’m a way where it’s bearable hahah
DON'T do it inside when just opening the can, the smell will stay for weeks.. Just a tip haha

i did try to immigrate to canada by quebec system for immigration but i couldnot collect much point ... i just need to know if i have to study harder french language or it is better to move directly to sweden ... if i go to sweden i will live in malmo ... i wanted to know which country is better for making money also ?
I know that we swedes eat Surströmming in a lot of different ways. I eat on a plate with potatoes, onions, sour cream & a “tunnbröd” with “messmör” on. :) so you have to discover the way you like it. Or if you don’t like it it’s okay too. It is a very unique taste.
I live in Luleå, if you don’t like winter you should experience the northern Sweden in the summer when we have midnight sun. So beautiful ☀️
But if you wanna experience a “real” winter with lots of snow and cold weather this is the place to be 👌🏻
Have you seen Allt för Sverige and what do you think about it?
Åland is actually a part of Finland, but it's a cute island. Gothenburg is awesome during the spring, summer and the autumn.
Would be a challenge to get it all cleared and the students have other important things to focus on 🙈
You have to come to Gothenburg, it’s the best city in Sweden! You’ll love it here
If you don’t like the winter where you are rn but still really like prolympia, Sundsvall is maybe a city you’ll like! They have a really good winter and they do have prolympia there as well. I think you could get a job on that school pretty easily.
You have to get to Gotland when they have their medieval week it's super cool with tournament etc ...
That sounds really awesome!!
I'm from Gothenburg and I just love it here! It's a beautiful city and can't get enough of it.
have you visit any of the 70+ no go zone? I thought so sweden sucks
Love all of your videos, their very well done
one day you want to visit Indonesia, just let me know and you’ll know how much different the culture. I wonder how big my preparation to move to my husband in Sweden. I don’t use to the cold at all...
If you are going to Gothenburg in the summer, you really have to take the extra trip down to Falkenberg, really small town. But great beaches :)
Come to Gothenburg and while at it go to the region of Bohuslän (best during summer) and visit Lysekil and Smögen it’s crazy beautiful!
The winter time is amazing here, skiing is so nice.
Great vid !! Sweden is awesome but I hate winter too. Swedish summer is so great with the long days. Gothenburg is awesome especially in the summer.
Linköping is a lovely city too. Västerås is great if you want to take the bike and Halmstad is wonderful too
You should try Surströmming first with bred onion and potatoes, THEN the "pure quill" straight from the can.
you will love the Winter in Norrland! You can scoot there and ski
You should consider skåne if you want to live in Sweden and still escape the terrible winter. Shorter winters and not as much snow
Stefan the taste is good if you use potato raw onion and " soft tunnbröd' and a beer or snaps to the formatted haring, "surströmming". and I live in the north of Thailand and I never go back to Sweden.
You should visit Blekinge, sveriges trädgård! Nog brutalt underskattat här, riktigt fint.
Eat it the right way!
(Surströmming is delicous and it's annoying when every youtuber is eating it wrong. So please show an example of the correct way to eat it!)
Norrköping by Swedish city standards is more of a medium size, perhaps a bit more. Many cities are expanding rapidly right now.
Surströmming also smells worse than it tastes, people tend to say it tastes salt. Not much else.
Why not do both for the surströmming? You could try it first the right way and then later try it by itself, or the other way round (though maybe film and combine two different videos with at least an hour in between so that the taste of it by itself doesn't ruin the taste of the proper way).
Nästa sommar tycker jag att du borde åka till Gotland! Det är så himla fint där. (Älskar din kanal)
There are much food in Sweden that is Good. One I Think you should try are "Flygande Jakop" that will be Good to see you eat it.
I would like to see you try it both ways and compare it if it really is better the traditional way vs straight up.
You should definitely visit Helsingborg. And while you're here you should go to Helsingör in Denmark as well!
The more I watch your vids, the more I think I need to visit Sweden 🇸🇪
Surströmming the proper way. :) Definitely go to Göteborg. Awesome place. We have Liseberg.
Southern Sweden was my favorite area that I lived in growing up. Lots of beautiful places all over though.
Even if you try surströmming the correct way, the disgusting taste of surströmming Will overtake everything.. im 26 and tried it 5 Times, its the Only food that makes me almost throwing up.
Tip: try the 'Desirébulle' next time you have a fika
Just a tip on the road... do not - NOT - open the surströmming-can inside. It should be opened and eaten outside.
You HAVE to go to Gothenburg, Stefan! It's an amazing city! I fell in love with this city since May 2017 and this upcoming November I will be visiting Gothenburg for the... 6TH time!
Thank u we love u too ...... u can come anytime u like
Förvarning, Göteborg ä som en enda stor byggarbetsplats, ganska coolt men lite frustrerande :P
Feel so good to heard Thailand from this video 🙈🇹🇭
"Do you see yourself living in Sweden 15 years from now?" i think your answer to that question is how most swedes would answer :D
Hi, I think you should eat the correct way and after try the other way you mentioned
Voting hmm for me(next val) it would be direktdemokraterna
They want more or less the system in switzerland
Maybe try the both ways? First out of the can and then some days later try it the way it's supposed to be:)
If you do decide to eat Surströmming you should go for the right way and maybe that other "common way" afterwards if you feel like it.
You should eat Surströmming the right way, with bred, potatoes, chives and so on!
Thinking about moving back to Sweden after 16 whole years of living in England and Germany. Also considering starting a VLOG type youtube channel for that :)
Kul att du gillar att jobba på prolympia. hoppas du stannar ett tag till i Norrköping👍🏼
I love your positivity I wish I was like you
Yeah, about that Swedish winter... You hava a good plan going there, the only way to cope with it is to either learn how to live with it or move south, because you never get used to it. I'm born and live in Skåne and this isn't south enough sorry. I'm not used to it after almost 30 years hehe. Good luck :)
När du är i Göteborg glöm inte öarna! Väldigt charmiga och är en härlig kontrast från centrala Göteborg 😊
Haha well I'm sure you could if you want to! You might miss home in the winter though.
9:42 just so you know Amazon is opening soon in sweden, most likely before black friday =D
If you eat surströmming do it the right way.. i have eaten surströmming since i was a child, but i have never eaten it right from the can.
The ones that put pineapple on pizza is up for a public hanging in the square this weekend!
I have watched several videos about Sweden. It's a nice place, but it seems like a lot of sitting around in the dark winters, and people being snobbish to one another. Do people in Sweden do anything for fun ?
Om du provar surströmming, gör det på riktigt. With potatoes and the whole nine yards! ♥
You should definitely visit Thailand :) I'm from Thailand and recently moved to Sweden a couple month ago.
i would say do it the right way first than see if you dare doing it the other way. the right way it doesnt taste much more than a salty fish, and plz open the goddamn can the right way in a bucket with water let the bubbles come out and when they do you can take the can up and start doing it the right way, best way if you want to skip the smell is get someone that knows how to, to do it for you :D
No! Do it the right way! And once you've tried that, then you try it out of the can.
I'm not sure if you've answered this before, but have you seen the series Welcome To Sweden? If so, did you relate to it?
Thank you for your videos, they're so informing! Greetings from a greek subscriber! ^_^
I think once you live in Sweden is really hard to move some where else.
