La Jota Moncadeña - Moncada, Tarlac

  • La Jota Moncadeña was adapted from an old Spanish dance. It is a combination of Spanish and Ilocano dance set to Spanish music and castanets. A more solemn version of the dance is sometimes used to accompany a funeral procession, but it was also performed at the festival.
    La Jota Moncadeña is one of the most famous interpretation and adaptation of the Aragonese Jota dance. People of Moncada, Tarlac, call it rather by a different name: Jota Florana. The Jota Folrana was danced to the Ilocano/Yogad bamboo musical instrument ensemble called tallelet. Dance anthropologist Ramon Obusan said that the Jota Florana was danced to accompany a bereaved family to the burial of a loved one. The high pitched clicking of the bamboo clickers are supposed to represent melancholy wails. The slow portion of the dance is in fact named patay (death) or desmayo (fainting) that is performed to a very slow marcha funebre. The same dance figure is found in another Ilocano dance, the Ti Liday (which in Ilocano means ‘sorrow’ or grief-stricken’)
    The Jota Moncadeña similar to other Filipinized versions of the Spanish jota is literally mixe-up in flavor. The dance combines Spanish and Ilocano dance steps and music.

    La Jota Moncadena is one of the most famous folkdances in the Philippines, people of Moncada, Tarlac should be very proud for having this kind of beautiful folkdance originated in their own town Moncada. All young dancers of this folkdance are so lucky for they would still see themselves dancing even for decades to come through this nice video!

      We danced this before. Two couples only. Two ladies in their Pilipino Ternopil (dress)and two ladies in Barong suits performed as males.. There were no 😮 more true male dancers around then. But it was a Hit. Accepted by the Audience. Done in Darwin NT Australia!

    The hard thing about this dance is using castanets without garter and I remember I kept on falling it while dancing until I learned the technique! Used this dance in a competition when I was in high school around 2007! 🇵🇭

    Saben los filipinos que esta musica y baile son de herencia española?

    • @ronnienestor
      @ronnienestor Місяць тому

      Yes. Filipinos are aware of this Spanish heritage. The interpretation of Jota dance is different from the original Jota (jump) dance in Spain.
      Gracias.

      It is taught in elementary, high school and college textbooks that the Philippines was under Spain for 333 years so dances, food and language had major impact to our lives. The folk dances are preserved.

      castanets made from bamboo, ‘yan po ang original na gamit ng mga naunang sumayaw ng La Jota Moncadña dito sa aming bayan ng Moncada. Base naa rin po ang sukat at hugis ng castanets sa literature book. Salamat po sa panonood 🥰
