Nice video although I've been using fresh wood mulch for 40 years and have never had a problem. Wood will deplete nitrogen but easy fix is add nitrogen to your soil. Wood chips keep your top soil from drying out and from weeds taking over. It also cause fertilizer to slow release into the soil. Thats what had been working for me for the past 40 years, never a problem. Thanks for the video.
Thanks my friend for sharing with me this video about How to set up 5 gallon self water buckets / gardening / heirloomreview it was areal good excellent video how to learn and i can't wait to see your next video and God Bless and thanks my friend.
If you used pvc pipe of a larger diameter to support the disk, they wouldn't be prone to tipping. I thought this was great! I've been using two buckets nested, but would rather use one for several reasons. (Cost, control depth of reservoir, more stable). The funnel idea was very cool. Not sure why you used the landscape fabric in the top. I can see the bucket stays cleaner. Really happy I found this video! Thanks very much!
I have been doing this long before it became vogue. I used this method mainly for my window boxes then spread out to my veg garden. you are making this way to difficult. I never worried about soil getting into the bottom. I now graduated to wicking with rope.... Using rope IMO is cheaper and more efficient. But thanks for the video very well done,
With your wonderful instructions I will do this. No longer have a yard but a deck. Depended on rainfall most as I live in N Florida with heavy chlorine and fluoride in our tap water. With self watering I won't need our awful water much. Thank you for your efforts and engineering skills.
Tomato cages if you bend the bottoms in at 90 degrees... then fill with soil... the dirt holds alllllll the metal in place allll the way up! Long as you don't get any crazy straight line winds it works quite well...
@@HeirloomReviews absolutely! Works great for normal winds...but they might get top heavy eventually but that would happen regardless of your trellis!!
For spacers, I use aluminum soft drink cans with holes punched in them. Line the bucket bottoms ...strong and because they are thin, do not take up much space in the water reservoir section of the bucket.
Just a tip: Don't water your leaves like you do. It vastly increases the odds of disease. And do not spray with just high pressure that it flings the soil up under the underside of the leaves, for the same reason. You can use a softer shower head or stick a milk jug collected from coffee shops on top, with thumbtack-poked holes on the bottom of the jug. And let it slowly absorb the amount you intend to deliver. You can gauge this amount by watering how you normally do, except into a bucket. And pouring that into the jug to see what the level is to gauge that understanding. Rain doesn't water plants like we do. It's often much slower and the soil has time to respond to it. The drops fling dirt, but not as aggressively. Usually anyways...
I've had good luck with the buckets. Instead of funnels I cut a liter bottle in half and attach it to pvc and stick it in the hole. I use the 1 inch pvc to stick in the screw hole of the bottle. I need to put some scotch tape around the part that fits in the hole and it will be snug enough. Great video, thanks.
the bottle idea is a really good idea! the only problem i have with the bucket system is the soil only stays god at best 3 years then it needs to be changed. other then that i like em! thanks for watching :: ) )
I use Earthboxes also but I have also had the same issue with the potting mix becoming too wet. I think my potting mix wasn't as good as it should have been or the tray on the bottom may have bowed down. Your video gave me some ideas for troubleshooting. Thanks again and yes, I am now a follower to your channel.
If you use 33" tomato cages and turn them upside down you can fit the widest loop over the rim of the bucket with the narrow legs pointing up, it makes a really strong cage!
This year I am using the large plastic cans as yours. Placing them on a series of leveled pallets. Adding compost and leaf mold as the growing medium, to retain water, then creating a 6 inch layer of straw between each tub to prevent too much direct heat onto the root sides of the tubs. Then I mulch the top 2-3” with leaf mold, and a final layer of spent straw.I am home all summer, so watering every two days is no problem, and should be more than enough. I hope so anyhow. At the end of season, everything I use will be a winter mulch on my lasagne beds.
The UA-camr Parginio out of New Jersey does two T posts about 8 feet apart. Then a wire a cross the top from post to post. Everywhere a plant is drops an adjustable string for the tomato to go up. His climb as high as 10 feet.
yes i have though about doing that but your committed to that grow area where as i can always move them around and in fall i bring mine in an out of my garage to get a bit more grow out of them
Grow dwarf tomatoes instead of regular size tomatoes in this buckets. There is a huge variety available now. We make and release new ones every year. They are all open pollinated and you can save your seeds and regrow them.. It works much better. or use much larger cages.
@@HeirloomReviews good. They are developed for labor not just because they are dwarf. The flavor has to be great before it advances to the next development step.
What's your thoughts on just using soda bottles with holes in the bottom and top? Line the bucket. Insert pvc in one bottle. Put the hole in the bucket 1" below the top of containers in bucket for air. Then just fill. No need for fabric. As seen on Gardening with Leon
I used to be a cake decorator and saved tons of frosting buckets and the only thing I have ever grown in them was potatoes which did well but now I'm going to try many other things now. Especially since they are self watering thanks for the tutorial I enjoyed it handle on wrong side of bucket and all! Lol Growing blessings!
Not sure, but I think that the tools you use to remove lids for drywall compound or paint buckets will remove those lids you are having trouble with. They are, unsurprizingly, called "pail lid opener".
Why do you need to put the landscaping fabric in? Is that a necessary step? Also, is it absolutely necessary to put landscaping fabric in the nesting pot?
I am getting ready to start building this system, and I have a question. Why do you need to make a seperate hole and a small pvc pipe to add water? Seems like you could just make the overflow hole a little bit bigger and pour the water in there, and then use some kind of plug if you wanted it sealed.
wood chips as mulch is fine, but it benefits from being 2-4 inches of it, which is usually not attainable in a planter. leaf matter is ok also but that also invites a lot more creepy crawlies to be living near your plants.
