The way youtube originals handled your project is absolutely infuriating. This is not your fault, you were clearly very passionate and cared about the outcome, while they just wanted to make something that was "relevant". The months of ghosting is (un)surprisingly unprofessional of them. No creator deserves this attitude towards their work in progress. I hope you are doing better now and will have an opportunity to produce your art with a better financial aid and moral back-up

UA-cam fucked up badly. Dan was unfairly exploited and betrayed. He put everything into Dan Is Not Okay and because the algorithm and corporation is fucked, he got screwed over. Dan deserves the world. I will never stop being proud of him and how far he has come. I am continuing to expect great things from him and I know he will continue to grow and achieve his biggest dreams. What a legend Dan truly is.

Absolutely shocking to see them treat someone whos made them millions like that. They were such massive facets of youtube back in the day. Dan's show would have been like heartstopper but for queer adults. It'd have had a MASSIVE audience! Dan mentions it, but really the reason people scream "you should be on netflix" is because they will make any old piece of shit show. If he pitched this to them he'd find himself amongst netflix's other big blockbusters. Might pull them out of this hole theyre in too considering the stock collapse theyre seeing.

What's truly disheartening is that, if Dan, one of UA-cam's most popular and most loved content creators, was treated in such a dismissive way by UA-cam, it’s frightening to think how much more mistreatment and disrespect smaller content creators probably have to deal with on a regular basis. this really speaks to a bigger issue of labor and exploitation under this stage of capitalism. youtubers and influencers are workers in the same way that strbucks and amazn employees are, putting their bodies, mental and physical health, time, and energy on the line to make these corporations richer, and they deserve legal protections and fair treatment. i'm so sorry this happened to you dan, after all the $ you brought youtube for years. youtube uni*n when.....
There was a UA-cam Union - the Internet Creator's Guild, started by (among others) Hank Green a few years ago. It didn't last very long and it didn't scale enough to be as useful as it could have been.
IMO, this happened for two reasons:
First, it can be hard to get creators to see past their own challenges and busy schedules to focus on working together.
When you're going crazy trying to keep your own head above water, it's difficult to look at the bigger picture. This is SUPER common, by the way, and not limited to creators. It's a fairly fundamental social control mechanism - making sure people are individually struggling keeps them too busy to organize.
It's why, for example, hot button political issues tend to be things that immediately affect individuals (such as gas prices) and not broad/universal long term issues that will affect everyone, like the climate crisis. There's no time to worry about climate change when you're struggling to keep a roof over your head and your kids fed.
Secondly, because unions are not profit-driven enterprises, they depend on membership to fund operations. I don't remember the exact fee for ICG ($60/year?), but this creates an inherent catch 22 - you need a ton of members to have the scale and the funding to make real changes on big issues, but to do that you have to grow past a smaller membership total.
However, until you have that huge membership, the people who get in early end up feeling like they're paying $60 for nothing, so they're less likely to recommend joining when others ask a simple straight forward question - "is it worth joining?". Because up until the union has real power and momentum, the answer to that is honestly usually "not really".
I do think there are ways around these challenges and there will be future attempts for creators to collectively organize, but it will take more people talking about this and more people making comments like yours to get it started.

UA-cam is using American poor standards for labor rights on people everywhere, which includes a lot of countries with much better labor rights dealing with American bullshit attitudes about workers rights, etc

Dan, you have genuinely shaped the childhoods of millions of people in this world. You and Phil created something that was an outlet for people in abusive homes, people struggling with illnesses, etc. You have accomplished something in 10 years that people try to do in their entire lifetimes. You're such an important, genuine and outright amazing person and I'm so fucking glad you're back.

As a corporate slave myself who works in a local social media app, when they were doing Dan dirty for his project (more than an hour into the video), I can fully say that what the team was doing was intentional and it sucks. You can’t just talk to a partner content creator and promised a project (whilst under certain conditions) then eventually “””forget””” to tell them that they used up the budget. Budget is planned before any project is executed and I’m pretty sure they never included you as part of the plan from the start. They did that so your face would be plastered all over their event.
And I felt it when you said that they had budgets for other plans but not for you. Our company fired so many people to “cut costs” but are spending so much on other shiny and useless things that won’t even be sustainable in the long run.
Anyway, fuck corporations. Thanks for sharing this Dan and hope you’re doing well.

I think it might be because you are monetizing yourself. You stopped being a person with different sides and became a brand, a product. Brand consistency it's important because you need people to attach something to your name and stablish said brand.
When they think of something they would also think of you, it also helps with the algorithm. I can see how dehumanizing it can be to turn yourself and parts of your personality a business.
I have always seen UA-camrs as people with different aspects, people that grow and change just like me but there's plenty of people who just want Dan the brand and not the person.

They just manipulated you to give everything and they didn't give anything back. It's not difficult to just say "sorry we won't do your project, because x, z, w". You've been awfully polite in your answer, which shows true professionalism, my answer would have been much more passive aggressive.

I’m so glad to see so many people on UA-cam, especially the “originals” almost rebelling against all the shit that this app and THAT website throw at them. As ordinary viewers we knew they treated youtubers bad, but not this bad, and it shows they really have no regard for even their most prized representatives in the end. As one of The Lurkers™️ who’s been here silently watching since 2011, it’s been so neat to watch Dan’s growth and experiencing my own alongside it. I know lots of people probably have the same experience and I think that’s one of the coolest things about this platform.

If they’d gone ahead with his series, I actually would have paid money to whatever premium platform it would have been on/ad free. I barely watch anything on UA-cam anymore but I would have paid for their garbage service for Dan. I hope he makes content elsewhere, on his own terms, I still want to see this series he created because we’re the same age and it sounds genuinely relatable.

Everything you said about the platform so thoroughly resonated with me. I wish more creators would talk about these things. Because it's all so true and so important. I love, love, love my job. But it is extraordinarily taxing on my mental health. And the algorithm makes it impossible to find balance. I haven't taken a week off work since I started my channel 5 years ago.
But I still have that same love and passion for this platform that you do. I grew up watching carlieissocoollike, whataboutadam, etc. This platform is beautiful and it feels like home.
So thank you for being one of the inspirations for me to start this career. Please keep talking about this 🙏🏻
