    four wooden flap valves (called ben / は弁), two for intake and two for the manifold, control the direction and location of the airflow on each stroke of the piston to provide double action to the single output into the fire...more about fuigo here:

    I think I'm going to make one, I notice a huge difference in one main thing between old and new forging techniques, we have lost the quiet stillness and silence. My forge sounds like a jet engine starting up, It's nice to hear the crackling of the fire and hammer tinks, a much more relaxed environment to focus in. I'm going to build one myself, thanks.

      it doesn't take too much room, keep it small and see what you can do...check out this compact chisel maker's forge: www.geocities.co.jp/SweetHome-Ivory/2387/Kikigaki/Nomi.htm

      ...i wanna see someone make a plexiglass-walled fuigo with internal streamers for demos, hours of fun to watch...i was surprised to see that without a tuyere pipe the airflow clearly comes out diagonally alternating towards the front or back depending on which direction the piston is moving...the grass shows it a little bit at 1:34

    • @islandblacksmith
      @islandblacksmith  6 років тому +1

      if you use a charcoal bed, keep it damp before lighting the forge....also helps to have it all at that certain size, and softwood not hardwood charcoal: islandblacksmith.ca/2017/01/building-traditional-swordsmith-forge/

    Hey im making my fuigo right now, i just have a question if you dont mind. When you put it next to the hot coals what stops the ventilation flap from burning? I feel like it will catch fire or something. How close to you have it?

    • @islandblacksmith
      @islandblacksmith  5 років тому +1

      the fuigo sits behind a protective wall and has a steel pipe connecting it to the tuyere so it is nowhere near the hot coals...plenty of info on this playlist, check the descriptions for links too: ua-cam.com/video/CiSxI4wKpds/v-deo.html

    I've gone blank on who it was, but I believe it was a friend of yours, that made the collapsible/take-down fuigo. I'm going to have to find the video again because I still really want to make one to take to blacksmithing events. This video made me think that it'd be cool to have clear tops so people can see how it works (or maybe even make a full one out of plexi some day.

    • @islandblacksmith
      @islandblacksmith  Рік тому

      there's never any suction, it is blowing out on the push and pull stroke...the valves only go one way...usual piston gasket is raccoon fur, this is an old sheepskin rug, carpet apparently works too...more info and links here: islandblacksmith.ca/2015/06/why-you-need-a-swordsmiths-fuigo-box-bellows/

      @@islandblacksmith Thanks for the info but one more thing. How much charcoal ( I'm using softwood pine) do I need for forging a blade ( shaping it to tempering) ?

    • @islandblacksmith
      @islandblacksmith  6 років тому +1

      pine is a great charcoal wood! plenty...depends on the quality of the charcoal, the skill of your charcoal chopping, the construction of your forge, if you use fuigo or something else, how well you forge, and how many blades you need to make to get one that survives...keep track of the weight and see how it improves as you go...

      there is a vast amount of information on the website for those who diligently search...quenching is called yaki-ire...until you get started and work away at it you will not know the right questions to ask or how to understand and apply the answers...keep at it, the journey is long and few survive the resistance of real materials! ^____^

    I build mine according to the Japanese box bellows design. It works fantastically with a good airflow, and has allowed me to bypass noisy electric blowers. The main thing with box bellows is that it is sealed properly ( I used a wax on poly after sanding the insides ) and the main box in which the piston slides is squared up correctly. A carpenters square helped out. I also angled the handle in a similar way to the one pictured in the video. I found it more comfortable on my wrist that way.

      depends on your carpentry skills! this one is pretty rough and works just fine for normal forging work, see what you can come up with! ...the only options for purchase are to find an antique online from japan (beware of the small travelling tinker's size though ~60cm) or convince gabe to build you one, i have been encouraging him to begin making them available for purchase... granitemountainwoodcraft.com/category/fuigo/

      yes, very similar, box bellows are fuigo or fukisashi in japan: 鞴 ...the structural differences are a single rather than double piston rod, and the manifold is on the side and has two additional valves instead of on the bottom with a single valve:
