I would like to thank Hamster CEO Satoshi Hamada and all of his staff for giving us this awesome Taito classic I played over a decade. You guys really made my day. Keep up the work. I'm definitely looking forward to getting my hands on this.
Don't worry, guys; once 2035 rolls around, the 1939 Wizard of Oz movie and its soundtrack will enter the public domain, and then Taito will be able to release this game with its original main theme with zero legal issues! 😉
Released in October of 1987, Rainbow Islands: The Story of Bubble Bobble 2 is the sequel to the 1986 puzzle platformer game which took the world by storm. Gamewise, you assume the role of Bubblun and Bobblun who are now humans following the events of Bubble Bobble, who learned that the world is in danger once more, and it's up to them to use their newly acquired rainbow making powers to help their friends from the forces of evil. As the title implies, players can use this magic to trap enemies and eliminate them by causing the rainbows to fall on them. Naturally, the goal is to clear each act by reaching the top goal at the end of each stage, but the true goal is to capture and acquire all 7 rainbow diamonds which provides Bub and Bob the power they need to save their friends. Each island is themed uniquely based on their names, but there are also some islands which happen to pay homage to other Taito games such as The Fairyland Story, Arkanoid, Darius, and even Bubble Bobble. Note: the only notable change in this version is the main game theme which sounds differently from the original PCB whose main theme featured excerpts of Somewhere Over the Rainbow from the film adaptation of The Wizard of Oz.
Yeah, weren't Bub and Bob and their girlfriends human originally? In some recent 4 player versions of Bubble Bobble such as "Bubble Bobble 4 Friends" have the girlfriends become better bubble dragons too, and become the third and fourth players.
Hamster has no access to console games, they only have access to arcade games, unless Nintendo had access to including the category of PC Engine games on Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack.
@MylstarElectronics: Prefer the original which was on the Amiga version as well, shame its on the Arcade Archives collection and not a full game with a Platinum, I got to the Toy World once on a PS2 version on the Taito Legends disk.
So the main melody was changed to avoid copyright lawsuits. I hope that when Parodius Da comes out on the Arcade Archives, there are some symphony covers that need to be changed to avoid copyright problems.
@@Wotter16 My friend, Konami is now working with Wayfoward in Contra Operation Galuga and they're remaking Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater Delta. Also that they have a lot of projects on Silent Hill. The pandemic ruined thier pachinko business.
Even if Night Striker (1989) came to Arcade Archives as soon as possible to PS4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch, I get that game since I played that in the arcade long time ago.
Shame about the music thing. This was one of my favourite games on the Atari ST back in the day and the rendition of Over the Rainbow is the one I still have going around in my head when I think of it. That was a great version. I still have an ST in the attic but no room to set it up, so will definitely be getting this.
Absolutely delighted this has finally seen the light of day in the Arcade Archives. Look forward to painstakingly getting all the gems in order on each level for the secret rooms again... will we be able to input the codes on the start screen though? SSSLLRRS - fast rainbows (mainly because I regularly failed the horrible World 3 boss and missed the room)
@@KarlSturmgewher Hamster doesn't do Midway arcade games, remember? Warner Bros. already had the rights to the game, unless they made Midway compilations full of arcade and console games.
Great game! I imported the Sega Mega Drive version back in 1990. I had to widen my cart slot to get it to fit, but it was well worth it. :) I only wish they could use the original, "Somewhere over the Rainbow"ish sounding theme music. Maybe include a secret code to unlock it, or some type of use generated music that can be created by "someone" and shared for others to download and use. Haha
This is awesome - however, could you please fix the bug on PS4, where multi coloured vertical lines appear on the screen? The only way I could remove them was to quit the game and relaunch it!
Soooooo many secrets. Is it ever explained why the enemies after 3:45 transform into Bubble Bobble baddies when defeated, but not before this timestamp? Is it a behavior of the lucky clover item?
When you get the crystal ball (it's the purple and blue thing the crow turns into a few seconds before) as part of the every-third-item cycle, that's what triggers it.
No Somewhere Over The Rainbow!? The generic tune of the US version is used instead! Man, it hurts! I'll hope they inclueded even a Japanese version with the correct/original theme
The Amiga port is so damned overrated it's not even funny, not to mention it's not even the full game, and has music missing due to no 3 hidden islands. The Amiga port also uses Over the Rainbow, so that would be a no go.

The NES theme actually sounds really cool with this sound chip!
Honestly i think the music sounds better now. Zuntata did a great job avoiding a potential lawsuit from Ted Turner.
Finally it came Rainbow Island was my number 1 favorite Taito Arcade Game of All-time
Honestly, I like this theme over the original
Taito did a grand job with giving it the Yamaha YM2151 sound chip treatment
👍
Nice to see this game. It's pretty underrated, and good.
I'm so glad this made it to Switch. I never expected it!

Haha, yes.
But by then you think gamers would care for 80s arcade games?

Do you know everything?
Why they changed the theme?
@f-zerogx2624 likely to avoid issues with Metro Goldwyn Mayer who owns the rights to the song which is in the Wizard of Oz movie
I wish Parasol Stars was an arcade game and not just a PC Engine exclusive. Hamster could release it as part of the AA series.

@@joe26buck Good news!
I miss the original theme song so much
My childhood! Oh yes. You are a gift to gaming Hamster!!!
Now, Hamster bring us RASTAN!!!!!!
The reason this song "Over the Rainbow", from The Wizard of Oz, was taken down and replaced by the original song due to possible legal issues.
There's still the legal issues with Finest Hour 1989 to address possibly.
The tune which replaces it is the theme that is used in the NES port, albeit with the Yamaha YM2151 treatment

They YM2151'ed the NES song. They didn't want to incur whoever owns Over the Rainbow rights in court.
Understandable, they had to do that with "Frogger" too.
