    Ahoy, mates! ⛵️ The Natural Sciences degree at Cambridge is notorious for having an insane number of work hours, especially in first year. I had no idea of this before applying, so obviously I felt quite overwhelmed the first couple weeks because I wasn't used to always having work pending.
    In this video, I breakdown the components of a typical NatSci week at Cambridge during FIRST YEAR. Please keep the following in mind:
    📖 contact hours are pretty much fixed every week
    📖 independent work hours, on the other hand, are very variable
    📖 supervision work is usually something I never skipped on (although there were a few weeks that I wrote apology emails to my supervisors for not being able to submit my work)
    📖 lecture notes and practical revision were always the components that suffered as a result of busy work-weeks; so even though I have given estimates for how long I would've IDEALLY liked to spend on these components during term time, I was ALWAYS behind on them. But I would ensure to catch up on them during the break!
    📖 these are workload estimates for first-year NatSci, which is supposedly the busiest year. The contact hours decrease over the years as we specialise.
    I hope this video gave you an idea of how first-year NatSci weeks are structured. I made this video NOT to scare or overwhelm you, but just to convey the reality of how hectic term time can get. It took me a while to realise that it is utterly impossible to stay on top of all the work during term time if I wanted to stay physically and mentally healthy. So, prioritisation became my secret weapon.

    This was really helpful even though I don’t plan to do natural sciences but it showed me how important time management is. I love that you talked about both sides; how the workload can be overwhelming but at the same time it can be manageable. Overall, absolutely loved the video. Good luck for your second year!!!
    Loads of love!! ❤️❤️💖

    Nice video with realistic analysis of work load in Uni life !! Should give a good idea for juniors of how the course is and how well to be mentally prepared 👍👍proud of you as always , may god and guru bless you always 🙏

    This is a good reminder of how important time management is for these intense workloads. If they let you in then you're capable enough to understand the material, but whether you sink or swim depends on handling the workload.
    If you've been able to do all this work, and have this channel, and a social life, and even maybe eaten some food and got some sleep occasionally then you're doing well!
    Good luck with second year. You and Monicology in Oxford are the two uni vloggers I always watch!

      @@SailingwithSharvani Thanks! I try and make a habit of commenting because I enjoy the videos obvs, but also in case it helps boost the channel in the mysterious world of the UA-cam algorithm.
      Time management has never been my strong point so even your ability to produce a figure for how long you spend on average preparing for a supervision is an enviable contrast to to my cluttered and disorganised mind! 🤯

      It DEFINITELY helps with the algorithm - so very kind of you to think that 🙏🏽💛💛💛

    Thanks for this video! On the natsci prep course it says you should do 45-50 hours of study per week max, but would you say this is realistic?

    • @SailingwithSharvani
      @SailingwithSharvani  2 роки тому +2

      When they said 45-50 hours of study, I’m assuming they mean independent work hours, so that does sort of match my approximation (~ 40 hours) in this video! Definitely realistic! I think doing beyond 45-50 hours of independent work a week on top of contact hours is close to impossible 🤯🥵

      @PetsWithFurryPaws 2 роки тому

      @@SailingwithSharvani they said 20-25 hours on top of contact hours, so 50 in total but most natsci you tubers have said they study much more than that!

      Yeah I guess it really differs on how productive each student is. Some are able to grasp and remember concepts much more quickly than others. Some of my course-mates, for example, would just watch a lecture and be able to remember everything that was said. But for me, I'd need to read textbooks + make notes to really be able to absorb everything - which is a significant 1-2 hours of work per lecture. Also, as I mentioned in this video, first year natsci in specific is supposed to be the most demanding, in terms of work hours. So perhaps the guide is averaging out the work hours over the full duration of the degree. I guess the baseline of everything I'm trying to say is that everything differs from student to student, but the workload is manageable no matter which type of student you are and help is always available if not :)

    Hi Sharvani, I am a mum of a high-schooler from India, keen on applying for NatSci Biology at Cambridge. As vegans, we have questions/concerns regarding animal experiments in Natsci Biology and a few more queries around it. Is there a way you would be willing to communicate with me one on one please? Asking because I know from one of your earlier videos that you are a vegan too. I love your videos. Please keep up the good work 👍

      Hi Padma, this is a great question! Yes I am vegan, and would be very happy to answer any questions you have about the animal experiments :) Please message me on Instagram @sailingwithsharvani 💚 Thank you for your kind words! 🥰

    i am so afraid. i dreamed to study here. the workload just scares me. 10hours per day...

      As I mentioned in the disclaimer, this is not to scare you! Remember that term time is really short and the holidays are there to catch up on work - so nobody really works this much during term! And as I mentioned, first year natural sciences has one of the highest contact hours - so this is definitely the upper limit. I’m now in my second year and everything is more manageable - partly because I’ve also acclimatised 😊 so please don’t get scared :)
