  • Scuba divers off the coast of Turkey recently encountered a 13-foot-wide (4 meter) mass of clear goo containing millions of eggs, most likely laid by a red flying squid. These egg masses are rarely seen, as they're deep underwater and last for only a few days before the squid babies hatch and the mass disintegrates. Scientists aren't entirely sure how the masses get so big, but they think the giant size allows the eggs to spread out and receive oxygen, while the jellylike substance helps protect the eggs from infection, bacteria, and predators.

I love how she talks about all the delicate intricacies of the process and how wonderful and magical it is, leading up to the tiny squid making it out on their own to end it with, "AND THATS WHEN THEY GET DEVOURED" lol

That it expands to these dimentions on it's own, in hours, it's obviously her own theory, this being the second egg sack she ever seen, what can you expect? As someone seeing one for the first time (this big) and a total non-expert - it's still general knowledge that some squids or octopus has been seen inflating their sacks with water, using their jet.

Awesome. So a bunch of squid made this in a wild squid orgy? Or just one squid?

Lmao, only one squid did this, a female squid.

@@redbluestar1272 he was asking if it was fertilised by one or more males duh

@@HkFinn83 The egg was obviously fertilized by a male, probably more than one, and then once it got big, it was then released by a female.

Is it me or did it look like layers of linked octagons/hexagons? I saw other patterns in there as well but they seemed to be part of the interlinking framework. I know the brain likes making patterns out of things which is what I will chalk it up to but when looking at this with such patterns in thought, I can see how someone could use other materials to make new products like flexible metals that are super resilient or a massive nano net that can be used as a huge ionizer to filter air/water. I'd go deeper into such topics but theories don't always blow over well with public commenters.

    • @SocaTrain

thats what i was wondering lol. but its probably not as big as we imagine. she said water causes it to expand so initially, it probably comes out of the squid pretty small
