Giant Ball of Squid Mucus Discovered by Divers | National Geographic

- Scuba divers off the coast of Turkey recently encountered a 13-foot-wide (4 meter) mass of clear goo containing millions of eggs, most likely laid by a red flying squid. These egg masses are rarely seen, as they're deep underwater and last for only a few days before the squid babies hatch and the mass disintegrates. Scientists aren't entirely sure how the masses get so big, but they think the giant size allows the eggs to spread out and receive oxygen, while the jellylike substance helps protect the eggs from infection, bacteria, and predators.

I love how she talks about all the delicate intricacies of the process and how wonderful and magical it is, leading up to the tiny squid making it out on their own to end it with, "AND THATS WHEN THEY GET DEVOURED" lol
lol I know right :D
"And that's how they get devoured,"
Well that escalated quickly.
It's like how some fish make snot sleeping bags
Like the rainbow fish
lol pretty dark ending.
xD ikr!
Toooouch it, I want to see how the tact looks like.
Amazing!
That it expands to these dimentions on it's own, in hours, it's obviously her own theory, this being the second egg sack she ever seen, what can you expect? As someone seeing one for the first time (this big) and a total non-expert - it's still general knowledge that some squids or octopus has been seen inflating their sacks with water, using their jet.
Awesome. So a bunch of squid made this in a wild squid orgy? Or just one squid?
Lmao, only one squid did this, a female squid.
@@redbluestar1272 he was asking if it was fertilised by one or more males duh
@@HkFinn83 The egg was obviously fertilized by a male, probably more than one, and then once it got big, it was then released by a female.
looks like frog egg balls except less bumpy
Hi
Living orbeez
I want to pop it
What a a gross headline..but attention getter.and the picture is not at all gross
I wanna rip it
And here comes all the Twitter people
Wdym
Had to make sure it was real
Wow i would be scared of damaging it >_
Even though it's basically a big bubble of snot, I still think it looks amazing! :D
I saw "Giant Ball of Squid Mucus" and I had to click it.
Best ending ever
Anyone else see that squid or octopus in the back by the cliff at 2:25 to about 2:27
Ooohhh yeeeah! It like just disappears into the reef xD
Lol it was like.."what are they doing near my babies?... oh they're being careful nevermind"😂
Her vocal fry hurts my ears
Woah usually I would be like eww but than she says there's baby's in there I was like .o. 🐙 keep in mind I'm not done watching it
Why do American experts always speak with so much vocal fry? It's so annoying. They always do it on podcasts.
I don't like the way she talks. She's talking normal then when coming to the end of the sentence she's like brglllglrlgrllgrller...
Great video, regardless.
@John Doe chill out incel lmao
@John Doe or, you know, some people just talk like that... she's obviously fairly successful and I highly doubt that she's self conscious to the point that her voice is affected by it.
Dunno why, but I imagined a bunch of little children in a pool filled with jelly
Hey everyone bickering in the comments and all that, far be it for me to tell you what to do but maybe you should just relax and enjoy the squid mucus?
Thank you Danna for this scientifically cute narrative. I actually went looking for this video because I remember how striking the soundtrack was the first time I heard it when the story came out.
It takes a powerful swimmer to impregnate all these these eggs...
This every time I blow my.nose
OMG!!!
This is amazing
Why only 55 comments are on this video 😭😐😕
Is it me or did it look like layers of linked octagons/hexagons? I saw other patterns in there as well but they seemed to be part of the interlinking framework. I know the brain likes making patterns out of things which is what I will chalk it up to but when looking at this with such patterns in thought, I can see how someone could use other materials to make new products like flexible metals that are super resilient or a massive nano net that can be used as a huge ionizer to filter air/water. I'd go deeper into such topics but theories don't always blow over well with public commenters.
Hector Roldan Yeah, it's just you. inb4 sacred geometry lmao
when it will hatch?
I've told u
of course you saw one that was almost as big as this one
Awesome. .subhanallah
I want some jelly now
i want to pop it
2018
A bad cold.
If the egg sack is the size of a car, how big is the mother squid?
thats what i was wondering lol. but its probably not as big as we imagine. she said water causes it to expand so initially, it probably comes out of the squid pretty small
The sea is so scary 😢
It's beautiful too doe
